Love your videos! You have such a calming voice and make combing seem easy. I've been having a similar problem with some alpaca falling apart after I diz it and really found your handling methods helpful. Thank you! I hope to see many more videos and truly appreciate the time you take to share your expertise! Charlynn

+Charlynn Gimenez Hi Charlynn, Thanks for the lovely comment! Combing is easy ;). Well, with a little practice it is :) It always seems that the dizzing is the most difficult part to master for most people. To anyone who is still learning, I would say practice, if you can, on a good mid-range wool, like corriedale or romney. Save the camelids, angora, mohair and fine wools for later. If something seems difficult in the beginning, one is less likely to continue because they don't enjoy it, so that's why I recommend that to a beginner(not that I know if you are, but I thought I'd put that out there for others). The end product is so addictive, that once you pull that first beautiful top off the comb or hackle, most folks are hooked! :) Thanks so much for watching and happy combing/spinning !! -Kimberly :)

Thank you Natural Spinner, I never saw combs like that. You make the process seem relaxing and not too complicated. I feel inspired to process some of my llama fiber, I usually send it to be processed. I am almost inspired enough to get a few rabbits, well, almost.

I really enjoy your combing and spinning videos. Please make more. :). How do you process and wash your fiber?
@thenaturalspinner

Almost all of my fibers are combed before spinning. Sometimes I make cloud from the 'waste' after combing and then they can either be made into rolags or batts on the combing board. I am always thinking of more videos. Time and logistics usually stand in the way of getting them done, but I am absolutely going to be adding more soon! A washing video is one of the next to be done. I am so glad you enjoy them and thank you for leaving a comment :) -Kim

I have a thought which might be helpful (or ignore it, I don't mind). When static is a problem, you could control it better by putting an anti-static substance on your left hand. It wouldn't take much. Like maybe rub a dryer sheet on your hand. Then every time you stroke down the fibers they will stay calmer, without getting any product on them.

That is an interesting suggestion! Worth a try : ) Thanks for posting it. -Kimberly

Hello, thank you for sharing your beautiful technique and tool. I want buy Super-fine hackle, same like you. Is it your super-fine hackle 18 inches or 12 inches ? I really want to buy 18 inches one. If you don’t mind could you tell which size do you have. Thank you!

Hi Kanako, the superfine hackle has a working width of 9" and the base is about 12". I have asked how big the SF hackle can be made and will get back to you when I have that information. Keep in mind that the SF combs and hackle are the most expensive that he makes. Thanks for posting :) -Kimberly

Thank you for answer my question! I am trying asking this question to Costner service e-mail, but l couldn’t get response... That why l am asking you. Do you have 9 inches(12 inches) super fine hackle? Yes, this is so expensive...

Hi thanks for uploading videos about the use of Valkyrie combs. I've been thinking if I should get a pair of superfine combs recently. Your videos really help me greatly by that I viewed the combs clearly especially the depth of the tines. Do you think this pair of combs can deal with cats hairs under 2 inches well? I am trying to use hand carder to align them in one direction and clear the dirt. Not sure if combs do better job. :)

Hi and thank you for posting a comment. I haven't tried to comb cat hair before, but have combed very short Paco-Vicuna fiber on the Superfines. It can be done, but I do not know that I would recommend it, just because it is more difficult and there is usually more waste(leftover fiber on the combs). For fibers under 2", there are a couple of ways to use hand cards to get spinnable fiber. If the fiber doesn't have too much vm or second cuts(really short bits), then I would say just make rolags. With finer fiber like I would think cat would be, you would likely have better luck with cotton cards. There are more teeth per inch, good for really fine fibers. If there is too much dirt, vm, short fibers, then I would try and use the hand cards to make cloud, which can then be put back on the combs and rolled into rolags for ease of spinning. Pulling fiber off of the cards leaves almost all of the undesireable stuff on the cards. I have done a video showing how to make cloud. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks :) -Kim

Thanks for replying. I viewed that video showing how to make cloud. I'll try cotton cards and see if works well on those short fibers. Then I can proceed to spin them into lace, not sure if short staples make good lace ( I viewed your video on spinning lace also :D )

Are these the mini superfine Combs or are they regular size?

Hi Tiffani, The Valkyrie Superfine combs only come in one size. The tines are 3" wide & 3" high on a 4" head. I weighed the one that isn't secured to the table and it weighs 238 grams/8.3 ounces. I hope this helps. -Kimberly
