This is one of the many songs featured on Jorma's 70th Birthday at the Beacon Theatre in NYC! You can get your DVD here: furpeaceranch.com/store/produc...
I must say that is one heck of a jam session , I think the best "Come Back Baby" I ever listened to . It amazes me how many folks have never heard of Hot Tuna Or Jorma & Jack . Or they say , oh are they still around . They just don't know what they are missin' out on .
When I saw Tuna play "Come Back Baby" in 1973, Jorma played like a "wildman"! Long jam lasted much longer than this version, loved it. Still pull up old black and white videos on line from 73-76 at times.
For those of you who wondered that's Larry Campbell on fiddle...of the Levon Helm and Bob Dylan bands...he also produced a CD of Jorma's..Larry Plays nearly everything with strings on it brilliantly..including pedal steel guitar, guitar, dobro, mandolin fiddle you name it..
I remember well watching Phil and friends in Santa Fe about 08, they were doing Cumberland Blues and Jackie green was taking the lead and then it was Larry's turn, then the two of them were playing together and Jackie green gracefully stopped playing and bowed to Larry as he just ripped it up. Shredsville of Cumberland!
Much love Jorma, my health has kept me from traveling, but I always enjoy music from the Fur Peace and any time I can listen to you and Jack and any line up of Hot Tuna. Thanks for your music.
Warren Haynes, Jack Casady, Skoota Warner, Larry Campbell, Bill Kirchen, Barry Mitterhoff, and, of course, the birthday boy himself, Jorma! Not too damn shabby for a bunch of old farts! (I'll be 71 next month, so I can say that). Been loving Hot Tuna for more years than I can remember, 40 of 'em, at least. Keep on groovin', you guys. This was like a deep massage for my spirit.
Bill Kirchen from the much loved and long forgotten Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen thought I recognized the face but couldn't figure out why I've checked out some of his updated rambles with "Hot Rod Lincoln" the past few months. funnier than ever. great lineup here. is there anyone Warren Haynes CAN'T play with and sound right at home? not that I'm picking out separate guitars here ... just enjoying the mix thanks for the roster and damn youtube's lame spelling+grammar corrections for making accurate spelling inaccurate once again
A Hot Tuna moment.... Two friends and I are 6th row for Hot Tuna electric at the Premier theater in Tarrytown in 1976. Marshal amps to the ceiling. 20 minutes in my friend Mark turns to me and says.... This is the best thing I have ever seen. 2 1/2 hours later he turns to me and says.... I gotta get the fuck outta here.
+James Malzone Aaaahhhhh hahahahahahahahaha HA ! I know exactly what Mark meant. That band would actually take all of the oxygen out of your lungs even in a big space. I never left the room tho' !
I would buy tickets for both the early and late shows every time Jorma solo or Hot Tuna played in NYC at the Academy of Music.Early show began 7:30, remained inside for late show at 12:00. Didn't leave until after 4 a.m. as the sun was rising. Long night of music, great memories still vivid. Absolutely some of the best nights of my life. btw Ears were ringing as I left, these shows were in the 70's when the speakers were stacked sky high!
Gonna finally get to see Jack & Jorma again in 2 weeks ! It was to happen in July 2020, then July 2021 as part of their 50 year anniversary tour. Last caught them in Aug 2019 at The Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg Pa. Hard to believe that Jack is 77 and Jorma is soon to be 81. I`ve been groovin` on these two cat`s playing for nearly 55 years now ! Nice to see Warren in the lineup. Saw Hot Tuna play Warren Haynes` Christmas Jam in Asheville in 2005. When Dr. Ralph Stanley and band played, Jorma was sidestage taking pictures of Stanley. Always love seeing musicians that I am a fan of showing their fan side !!! These two guys have had a long life and career together. Great musicians never retire, Thank You for all the great music and memories !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've heard Hot Tuna perform recorded and live versions of this song for decades and each one is unique and incredible -- every time I think their performance of Come Back Baby is as great as it can possibly be, Jorma and Jack & Company find a way to make it even more thrilling.
We need more of this! (It sure makes living through 2020 a lot easier). It's great to see how well they have aged! Music better than ever - and it was fantastic back in the day!
So true mate, and I now live by his Starship brother: Peter KAUKONEN- lol, we are both fathers and meet regularly at local Dog Park here in green hills of Oregon! Still marveling at Paul Kantner’s masterpiece BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE, How to transform our selves AND this civilization.
That was one of the greatest jazz performances i've seen in a while. Warren Hayes slide at the end so sublime. clicking on all 12 cylinders! The groove was tight, free flowing and breath taking! HOT TUNA!
It was all great, but I thought warren's first solo was exquisite, both in tone and his feeling for timing in this always changing cadence of melodies, well, that's what Hot tuna does.
Man, let me tell you something: I first saw Hot Tuna in 70-71:They were playing a high school gym outside of Philadelphia...Ticket price $5, and they opened for the Mahavishnu Orchestra! But all these years later, with their friends, they sound better than ever; no 'oldies act'! God bless all of these outstanding musicians.
I saw Tuna in Hofstra college gymnasium in 1973.Also in Syracuse university ratceller in (campus tavern) in 1975 and my table was only 10 feet away! Times have changed!
Frank Dialogue Saw them winter 71-72 at Franklin & Marshall where I was attending. Oh, did we ever attend that gig. Loved these guys since the Airplane in ‘67.
not exactly random several guests with central CA roots that go way back check out some of the SF jam sessions on youtube with various original SF band members jamming together on a regular weekly basis ... hashing out their improv skills together w/ a diff lineup every week
A Nice touch here, is that he is paying tribute to Jorma by actually playing one of Jorma`s rounds note for note from Hot Tuna`s performance at the closing of the Fillmore on July 3rd 1971! Stunning!!!!
Yes, that was some really fine playing by Mr. Mitterhoff. It was so cool to hear the original sound from the album First Pull Up Then Pull Down come roaring out of his little tomahawk.
I lived on Long Island N.Y. and went to see Tuna at the Palladium (formerly the Academy of Music) every time they were there! Both early and late shows! Approximately 12 shows in all.
pourquoi english ? (why?)... on l'aime aussi en france et on l'écoute en anglais, et on lit tout vos com en anglais , et à chacun de faire ce qu'il faut pour comprendre... gros bisous
You guys rock...jack Cassidy and jarma sounds just as good as you did back in the airplanes heyday you have a ass kicking sound live..... always dug your sound and your still hammering down...I think it's awesome....keep rocking
I saw Hot Tuna in 71' leading the bill ,second on the bill was the Allman brothers, third the Baja Marimba band, at the Fillmore West, on a Thursday night great show.. Daunes probably last time at the Fillmore West, & was the best, before going to Fillmore East 4 the live Album..👍👍
Love it Jorma! I am still sorry for missing the chance to meet you. I was working for Stuart McDar years ago and we were going down the road and a truck behind us started flashing headlights and he said that is Jorma. Pulled over and goes back to the truck and comes back with a set of plans. I asked who was that. He says a old friend of mine. Jorma from Jefferson Airplane! I was like omg you didn't tell me! Lol. And it's a small world, I'm from Albany Ohio and moved here to Wisconsin 20 years ago. My best friend here Happy Nelson sat up a benefit show for Jefferson Airplane in San Francisco in the 70s. He said you sent him to see your acupuncturist. Karma ♥️ Peace Brother!
IMO, 2 of the 5 best guitarists on stage together (David Gilmour, Tony Iommi, and of course Jimi round out the top 5. Then comes EVerybody else). Sad i didn't catch this live, and i could have.
Just great music boy do I miss papa john but I can live with this but please turn up the sound my wares are bleeding for tuna music I close my eyes and I just smile
Love Jorma. In fact, I bought a Gibson ES-345 Stereo, cherry red, gold plated with Bigsby vibrato in 1967 just because I saw him play and that was his axe at the time. Unreal sound, great player. Very out of tune here, though. But a cool jam nevertheless.
Saw Hot Tuna I believe 71 Winterland benefit for Oscelete Greatfull Dead New Ryders of the Purple sage Jerry Garcia played petal steel Hot Tuna with Papa john Critch my friend and I were the only ones sitting in the upper balcony There was a table with two barrels plain or electric
