Although the course for which I played this song was about Keith Jarrett, my desire to play a non-jazz standard was actually inspired by Brad Mehldau, and the intimacy with which he shared his love for song lyrics in his autobiography, Formation, which has affected me in more ways than one. “Come Back to Earth" was the one of the first songs I heard which didn’t just sound like words but rather felt like meaning.
There is some things I dislike about this performance, like the wonky 16th-note feel, losing the melody at “I wouldn’t even tell myself”, and the rushed outro. But there are many things I like about it, like the convincing improvised intro, the three handed texture, the counterpoint towards the end. Most of all I think this performance is a testament to my progress as a pianist, and it makes me wonder how much further I can still go.
Thanks to Shao Wen Chew for editing this video for me. She wanted the full performance so I gave the video file to her and asked her to edit it for me. She was helpful enough to work out a template with me, and the rest of the videos on my channel are based off this.
