Along that top shelf, I think I would buy some white square crates and put them on their sides (open side forward, obviously). That would add stability to the shelves to accommodate the added weight on the top, AND hold the "stacks" in place better. JMO!

For yarns of the same family, could you try taping the packaging together with the yarn inside. Stacking them to ceiling could act like a bookend. Leave the package opening facing outwards so you can access the balls. The yarn would have to lay flat not end to end. If that all makes any sense. Or you could use boxes ever few feet, with yarn inside to act as bookends. Have fun.

You definitely need more shelves or crates on top. I'd move the notebooks from the one shelf unit and also use that area. And you have the top of the other unit in the other room. You actually need a giant she shed as your hobby room and hideout.

You need more shelves! They make single shelves in white like the kind you have. Just place them across the top of the top shelf and viola! You have more space!

I think the operative words here are: "too much". I'm NOT judging, because I also have "too much" yarn for the spaces I have to store it. I have yarns that I haven't SEEN in 2+ yrs because it's stashed away in huge bins. It is for this reason that I simply do not buy anymore (well, that and finances). There just comes a time when I look around my craft room and realize I have more yarn than a yarn aisle down my favorite "box" store that I just have to STOP. I have more than enough selection of yarns for literally ANY projects I could possibly think of making over the next 2 years. One CAUTION to folks that are looking to store these amounts of yarn.... Please make SURE whatever shelves you are using are RATED FOR THE POUNDAGE of yarn you are placing on them. You don't realize when you are just holding a ball or two of yarn how much it WEIGHS when you are stacking HUNDREDS of skeins/balls on ONE shelf system. I have had shelves collapse from the weight, and it was disasterous.
