When Antonia took you to the automatic exit door and it did not open, she must think "Sorry Mom I don't know why this door is not working for you! You usually have enough magic to open them!"
I actually think Joy also learns a lot about her videos by our comments. Antonia isn't able to tell her that it was an exit door but we saw that pretty clearly.
@@masterpopeyoda3290 Blind people have computers adapted. It probably has text to speech functionality. It's not such a odd thing, your phone probably has that too.
generalcarver As a professional dog trainer of pets and service dogs I can say after spending so much time with a dog they bond with you regardless of food rewards, moreso than any pet dog usually does.
you're training those sales people so well! The lady in the make-up store caught herself mid-pet and held her own hand as if to control herself from trying to pet the adorable puppy! (many hearts!)
infinite sis right the only time you’re allowed to pet a service dog is when they’re off-duty. Otherwise, you’ll distract them which can be very dangerous.
@@HaziqAnna96 Dogs are pretty easy to excite even well trained ones, you want to keep external stimulus to a minimum. I think the lady in ULTA was just holding her hand down to lead the dog, but that smart girl doesn't need any help.
jacc lawrence thank you, she is amazing! Did you hear that she is retiring on February 10? She is almost 11 years old and has begun to show signs of slowing down. I’m returning to guide dog school February 11 to receive my new guiding angel. Antonia will retire in our families home and continue to get spoiled rotten.
Not, quite the same at all, but my lens decided to pop out of my glasses last month. I called ahead to my Optometrists office but because of the mask, my Sunglasses that go over my regular glasses fogged up. I was told there was a doorbell I needed to push to be let in. (Yes, Covid-19 was a factor in them only letting one person in at a time.). I was laughing to myself because it was the SMALLEST doorbell ever. I saw it on the way out.
LOL, my husband laughed at your comment because he knows that’s probably not true Ha. Even though I cannot see when I’m out shopping, I somehow find a way to by a lot of things I enjoy :-)
@@JoyRoss oh really? Have you tried it? Cause you actually do SAVE A LOT BOFL and helps our home mother Earth to stay clean. Also how would u guys know if you guys don't practice it, I assume?
@@JoyRoss FYI most the stuff they sell that is zero waste you can simply make and DIY LOL its very simple too but hey luck to you all that disagree and think that it isn't cheaper when honestly has saved me SHIT LOAD of money
@@mambuchaa so basically for what I remember, guide dogs are in a job at the moment, if they get pet they will get distracted and there for they may not do their jobs. When they're out of the leash (or whatever that is call) they're not on work and I guess that is fine to pet them. In one of the video of her, I think it was at the airport, she explains that more precisely cause someone ask her if they could pet the dog and she says why not they shouldn't do it. Ps: sorry for the bad English
@@Samael1302 Same logic for any dog trained to do something. You pet your guardians after they're finished protecting the house ( you're back and told them to stop), you pet your sniffer when he's found the drug and the exercise is over, you pet your Nanny dog when baby is finally Asleep... And so on. For trained dogs, rewards are precious and most useful but they need to be used wisely. And petting is obviously one of the best rewards lol soooo try and hold your hand when you see a dog working ^^
I was about to comment that. She was about to put her hand out so the dog can smell them put it behind her. I always let dogs smell my hands so I appreciate her restraint.
@@Lazy_TropicalGirl28596 They wouldnt be choosen for the training in the first place I guess. Or they refuse to guide with turning around or protesting. I recommend you watch a bid of molly burke where she explains it. :)
Well I guess one plus of being blind is when you go into the store you only get what you need, and don’t get distracted buying a bunch of stuff you really don’t need.
Yep, pretty much. Give them verbal praise, and then sense their confusion when you pass by the usual place to take a load off. Dog is probably thinking, "But, mom, you usually sit there. Fine, I'll fine the next door you need, but seriously, we're taking a break at the next bench I see." lol
I love dogs. I never touch service dogs without permission, but I do say good puppy. I work near Disney world and we have bomb dogs constantly searching the area with security, and i can't touch it but I always say good puppy and the security laughs.
+marykacyy I think people mostly don't step on her paws... but labs are a good breed for that because they are usually a bit more hardy than some breeds and don't get too bothered by occasional small bumps.
I'm currently in a program that teaches us (high school students) how to train service dogs for amputees and people with ptsd. When we take the goldens we're training in public to desensitize them, people can be so rude. Parents have told their kids to come up and pet our dogs, without asking us and grown adults will even yell at our goldens telling them to "sit" or "roll over" from across the room. So glad to see some respectful people in this video!! Love it!!
MEanME yes!! Service dogs can help so so much for people with PTSD. They can sense the start of trigger/panic attacks and help pull you out of those moments and ground you. I my best friend has 2 service dogs and they are absolutely amazing. It’s insane how in tune a dog can be to our bodies. Some service dogs can even be trained to sense cancer and other illnesses
That's insane! I was out the other day with my 4 year old who loves dogs and we saw someone with a service dog and I told my daughter immediately that she wasn't allowed to pet the doggy because he was working and helping the man. He overhead and said thanks and let her give the dog a treat instead.
By the way when you went into Ross she did take you to the door but it was an exit door I think you're mistaking glass walls for exit doors your dog is actually taking you exactly were you asked to go but she just can't tell them that their exit doors
i love how u could tell what store it was by the smell because i know for a fact that michaels smells a specific way so its crazy to me that u could tell
I totally love that guy and bed Bath and beyond he knew exactly how to give directions. I was in the store the other day and I kept asking to find something and people kept telling me it was in aisle 10 I'll five to the right I mean it drove me crazy to be 20 minutes before I found somebody that could actually help me .no my first dog was so good he could actually just have me tell him what I needed and like bread milk eggs cheese and he would actually take me to the exact items especially he knew which bread to get because he could smell it and he would actually. His notes directly on top of it the only thing you had problem with was he got apples and tomatoes confused I don't blame them they're very similar.
Your dog is amazing!!! Did he/she know what store to go to? I see that Antonia is a bit confused and her handler needs to ask somebody where she is. I wonder if there's a way to teach the dog to recognize the shops, for examples by a signal or how further from a specific location it is
They are definitely angels on earth. Unfortunately, my angel, Antonia Hope, just passed away right before Christmas. Check out my newest videos to see her before she passed away. My angel will always live on in my heart.
Can we appreciate how well she films without being able to see what shes filming? We got people out here filming vertical or not even making eye contact and they can see perfectly fine
What kind of mount is she using so the camera stays level? I can't see the screen myself. Like Joy, I also have prosthetic eyes. If I could work out a system where I can use an accessible camera hands-free, record the environment in stereo in as discrete a manner as possible so I'm not encumbered by wired in-ear microphones or other equipment, then I just might start learning how to do this myself. Joy, do you film using your phone, or do you have a camera like a goPro or something else that you use?
Hi Joy! I'm not too sure why I'm writing this as I never comment on youtube, but I just want to say that your attitude and your "energy" is so refreshing. It's truly special and rare and I'm so happy you're sharing it regularly with me and the community at large. I hope you're doing well and just please never change! Give Antonia a sloppy kiss for me!
I laughed ( with sympathetic understanding ) when your guide dog tried to enter the glass wall ! I see well enough to get around without a guide, but poorly enough that I have tried more than once to enter/exit through a window wall myself. One of the first things they teach in Architecture school is to make it obvious where the door is. Duh ! You and Antonia inspired me.
Yep, I’ve had that experience before and I’m just rather nearsighted without my glasses! And in engineering they teach to make it obvious how to use a thing (ie whether you push or pull the door), so if you try to push a pull door, it’s not your fault, it’s unclear design!
So I don't know what percentage of your vision you have and if you already know this, but it was actually a door and not a glass wall. It was just an exit door though, just a couple of meters before the entrance. So, technically, Antonia took her to a door, she just can't read to tell the difference between the two. I'm sure she's gonna learn to read soon though lol, she's such a smart dog
I always enjoy watching you shop. I have a question if you don't mind. I've noticed that in a lot of retail stores they've changed their debit/credit card machines to be touch screen. Are you able to use those? If so, how?
Alexa Einzelgänger thank you, and to answer your question, no, I cannot use any of the debit/credit card screens. I always have to rely on the store associate to assist me with tapping the right buttons and finding the place to sign my name. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask :-)
your puppy is amazing! To be able to figure out which door to go in and out of and to safely get you all over. You and your puppy are a wonderful team who together conquers the world!!! Wonderful video and thanks for sharing your world with us!
Omg Antonia looked so happy and proud everytime she brought you somewhere. When she would stop at a bench she would look at you waiting for that good girl and pet and the treat. Your lucky to have eachother! Antonia is such a good girl!
@@JoyRoss oh no I didnt realise this was an older video. It was just in my recommendations. I'm so sorry. She was gorgeous! And I can tell she lived a very happy and fulfilling life. Your an amazing owner
Thanks, I have learned to do my makeup all by feel. It’s actually so easy! If you go to my Blind tutorial playlist on my channel, you will find a video where I demonstrate how I apply my makeup with only using my finger eyes. It literally took me losing all of my eyesight to realize that I can do so much more than I could even dream. 98% of each day I forget that I am really and truly 100% blind in my eyes. I see so much through my other senses, minds eye, but more importantly through the eyes of my heart. Blindness is beautiful! :-)
This is so interesting to see, thank you for sharing! Sorry to hear about Antonia's passing, she was such a cutie, and it was adorable how she would stop at every bench for you. Also, you seem like such a positive person and just radiate good energy that makes anyone around you feel better, I can't wait to see more videos from you!
I love how advanced the world is that blind people can make a living off of RU-vid and contact people I love your videos you make me appreciate what I can do and what I have
I notice sometimes people try to pet Antonia as she's following them, or wave their hand in front of her nose for her to follow. Are those OK? Is there anything in particular you should do or not do if someone with a guide dog is following you?
probably let the dog be if they are servicing someoone. if you had anxiety attacks or were blind ect you would not want someone trying to get your service dogs attention. i only know this cause i read it somewhere. best to pet a dog whos on a walk whos not a service dog
It's not ok, if the dog knows how to follow because the school taught her then she can do it, but otherise they could go sighted guide. :) Not good to call, pet, direct, because the dog is in harness and needs to keep their focus. :) I had guide dogs, but no more for me, my last one got attacked and I had to put him down. :'( I miss him.
Leah Reynaud I agree 110% with what you were saying. I am so sorry to hear about your dog! That’s aweful. I hope one day you may overcome the fear and get a dog. Whatever fits your needs, of course!
as I can tell she does not remember where a store is, she just takes you to a door when you ask her to, but you don' t know if it's the right shop. Am I right?
It could mean a few different things! My dog and I use it so he speeds up, some people use it so their dog puts their paws up on a change in elevation usually a change that’s going up, like a curb, ramp, and more commonly stairs.
Tamara idk I think she was like 10 at the time and was getting ready to retire.... though to be honest all service animals are always training just like how all artist are always learning!
That guy in bed bath and beyond looked so excited to help you, he was grinning ear to ear the entire time! I’m paralyzed and when you said that people will say follow me and not say a word, that reminds me of when people will ask me if I can stand and at all to sit on something else lol
I've been looking for a video of how people navigate with their dogs so I was really pleased to find this video. It's helped me understand how you work together better than I did. That shop assistant who kept talking was great. It's helped me feel a bit more confident in offering help to someone who has less sight. Thanks so much. Glad you worked things out and got what you wanted. And good call on getting the husband to go back for the bin. You would have literally had your hands full with the bin and your dog! Looks like you'll always be able to find a place to sit as well!
This is fascinating. The relationship with Antonia, the relationships with store staff etc and how you get around using smells and sound to work stuff out, it's really interesting and amazing to watch. I hope other visually or otherwise impaired people take inspiration from this to enable them to live as best they can.
I just found your channel 2 days ago and I am obsessed!!! You have such a lovely demeanour and are so positive, and I am just in love with Antonia!!!! I'm so sad that she's retired, she obviously loves being your eyes, but hoping she settles well into retirement life soon! :)
Thankyou so much for posting these videos - I’m a registered nurse & I look after people from time to time who have poor vision. Seeing how difficult it really is from this POV is super insightful! Good on you for spreading awareness 😊 & good on Tony for her hard work!
I can’t believe that after all the work you put into making such a great video for us to enjoy, my comment is this: OMG BED BATH AND BEYOND HAS FREEZABLE LUNCH BAGS????? 😱😱😱 Time to go shopping! 😁😁😁
I personally think they do, I know my guiding angels understand somewhat that mommy cannot see. They are very smart, sensitive, and in tune to my needs. And when I say they, I have had two guide dogs over the past almost 11 years. The yellow lab was my first guiding angel named Antonia, she passed away 10 months ago at Christmas, my new guiding angel is Arabella, she is a beautiful black lab.
Its amazing how you and your dog work so well together. Its funny seeing how people react to helping you - the lady in Ross who was using arm motions to direct you, completely useless but it's what's ingrained in us. I wish schools would have some kind of lesson on how to help and direct blind people (although I guess that's what your videos are for!)
