When I was little, almost every Spanish kid used to read the Gerónimo Stilton series (italian series, if I'm not wrong), about a rat world where the main character goes on adventures and it's full of fantasy. Also, there were certain pages that had scents (horrible tbh 😂), I think it's one of the reasons why kids were so curious about the books! Also, pretty sure those who used to love Gerónimo Stilton still love fantasy, I certainly do! 😁 Edit: Your comments are making me smile so much!! 😭 I'm glad so many of us enjoyed these books when we were little! 🥰

As a Finn Moomins have always been a big part of my life. I feel lile that has shaped my reading change. I love everything cozy and books with a lot of filosofies in them. I'd highly recommend you all to read Moomin books by Tove Jansson . Love you❤
When I was little I remember reading the Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Bliyton and I swear it change the chemistry of my brain. I don't think I even ever finished the book collection, i guess short stories have always been something I've struggled to read, but I remember loving it so much and watching a DVD I had of 10 episodes of the animated series to go to bed every night I was just so in love with all the characters.
I think my “big influence” book was later into childhood. I’d have to say it was “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. We were assigned to read it for literature class in 6th grade and I’m so happy they did!

'The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories' is a great collection from Angela Carter - it's very much still along the line of subverted fairytales but the short stories work way better for her writing style I found
I never comment on videos, but your childhood favourite book made me so nostalgic, I had to share. It's one I have kept from my childhood as well (the Estonian translation; here it's titled "The Fairy Book"), precisely because of the gorgeous illustrations. And now I'm excited to show and read it to my baby (and possible future siblings) once he's old enough. 🥺☺
As a really small child i heard and read ramayan so many times it definitely had an impact on me. You dont even need to be like religiously involved because it is such a beautiful story.
I used to love books by Richard Scarry when I was a child. "What Do People Do All Day", and "Busy Busy World" in particular. They were kind of the Where's Waldo of their time. Illustrated books about the activity in a city. I always felt immediately connected to my neighbourhood and town through these books. Like I was part of this busy world. Ever since I'm still hugely social with everyday people wherever I go.

That is the cutest cat! I'm not sure if there's ONE childhood book that shaped me, but there are different books from different times in my life. All A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh books I read over and over. And I wrote my own Pooh stories. I read lots of books about animals and nature. My mom loved stories about elves and tomte, that's probably the first fae/fantasy element I remember having in my life. Oh, and Maurice Sendak - I loved the mix of darkness, quirkiness, and beauty in his art and stories. I could go on for pages, but I'll let this be enough.
back when I was still in elementary, I would watch Hotel 13 (a German show that aired in Nickelodeon, and I watched the Dutch dubbed version + I read the books that were made for them!!) it's about these teens who work at a hotel for the summer and they discover historical secrets in the said hotel, like a missing room, time travel and the consequences of it, like the butterfly effect, mind blowing plot twists (it was!). to this day I love love historical sci-fi and everything time travel like the Paper Girls comics and Doctor Who, to name a few.
Some book series that just stuck with me to this day (all originally German) are Liliane Susewind by Tanya Stewner (it's basically about a girl, Liliane, who can talk to animals and saves all type of animals from "bad people" (this series is for children around the age of 9); Silber by Kerstin Gier (I believe this has an English translation and is called the Silver trilogy) (this one is about lucid dreams where the main character Liv one day dreams about watching a group of boys from her school do some kind of ritual but the weird thing is the boys also had the exact same dream (it's hard to explain but still one of my all time favorite trilogies)); and the last book series is called "Edelstein"-trilogy (German) or "Ruby Red"-trilogy (English) also by Kerstin Gier (can you tell she used to be my favorite author?) (This series is basically about time travelling). What I love most about Kerstin Gier's books is that all of the ones I've read had a romance subplot but it wasn't really like the fantasy world only existed because of that romance. One of her later books called "Wolkenschloss"/"Castle in the clouds" made me realize that books with a romance subplot (and with undercover agents) are my favorite type of books!

Und Wolkenschloss von Kerstin Gier ist ein neueres Buch, als ich das gelesen habe, war ich definitiv schon ein Teenager, ist auch nicht Fantasy sondern mehr so ein mysteriöses Hotel mit seltsamen Gästen, wo die Protagonistin sich verliebt und eine Art "Kriminalfall" oder "Verschwörung" aufdeckt, aber die mytsreiöse Atmosphäre des Hotels und der Gäste ab von der Welt hat mich damals unglaublich gefesselt, aber ich liebe Kerstin Giers Werke generell, auch ihre Erwachsenenromane. Aber Silber und die Edelsteintrilogie sind immer noch mit meine absoluten Lieblingsbücher! Sorry, dass ich plötzlich selbst einen halben Roman schreibe, aber ich habe mich gerade so gefreut, hier Deutsche mit genau meinen Lieblingskinderbüchern zu treffen, hahaha
I've read a little bit of her short story collection. Pretty provocative stuff, I can see where she might be polarizing. I haven't really jumped into it enough to really have an opinion.
For me the books that shaped my reading taste to what it is now are The Princesses of the Fantasy Empire books by Thea Stilton (I don't know if they are translated to English and if so what's the title. I just translated the Hungarian one). They were about these princesses who were sisters and they each rule their own kingdoms that have its own unique climate and culture. Each book followed one of them but they were also connected. All those different fantasy worlds really sucked me in as a child. The books themselves are also SO beautiful. They have pretty illustrations on the cover, inside the book and the dust jacket as well. My favorite things as a child were the colorful pages in the middle of each book that have collages and more information about the characters in form of the diary of the princess. Soo yeah these books made a lasting impact and got me really into fantasy stories
My ultimate childhood book was the Dragonology book. I was OBSESSED. I'm a primary school teacher and got a copy for my students to read in the classroom and they also fell in love with the book. I actually caught one child trying to hide it in a secret spot so he'd be the only one to read it :P
as a child i always loved fairytales, for some time my parents would buy me journals, which not only had such stories, but also there was a CD included. i loooved listening to them, i think i even remember some of the actors’ voices. my grandparents still have the giant (as it seemed back then) book with beautiful illustrations by Annie-Claude Martin. i still find them so magical and eye-catching. one fantasy, which i don’t think many people know of, is a spanish trilogy by Maite Carranza, “Trilogía de las Brujas”. i adooored this, i have taken those books from our local library million times. the witches, different creatures, curses, spells - it was so entertaining, but as an aDuLt now i would say, that the writing is kind of poor… but the lore i still love❤️
If you’re looking for easy fantasies I would highly recommend A Magic Steeped in Poison, The Girl Who Fell Into the Sea, and Daughter of the Moon Goddess. They all have fairly simple political situations that don’t require a lot of effort to understand and satisfy that magical itch The Girl Who Fell into the Sea is a stand alone while the other two are the first in duologies so you won’t be investing in long ass series
I think you'll like the green bone saga, providing you're in the right mood. I found the first one a little hard to get into, but come Jade War & Jade Legacy, I became thoroughly invested in the story.
the thing that influenced my tastes the most as a kid is definitely Zomeravond by Annie M.G. Schmidt. that one really just hits different and absolutely shaped my love for atmospheric poetry 💛
Linda Chapman has a book series about unicorn kids who go to a magic school and live there. My mom used to read them to me when I was like 8. I loved it so much, the characters where like friends. And now I still love fantasy stories with those kinds of found family
Hi leonie, last weekend I got the same yearning for Fantasy, and I decided to look for the last book of the Drowning Empire series that had just come out. Then I decided to reread portions of the last book, to freshen up, and it was so engaging, even though I remembered most plot developments. Hehe I haven't finished the last book, but The Bone Shard Daughter and The Bone Shard Emperor are no doubt good recommendations for adult fantasy. The world, the dark and twisted magic, the pacing, all great. Characters like Mephi

As a child I used to read stories about other children (and their pets sometimes) having hilarious adventures which led to maturity of a main character. However, I can’t say that this type of books left a drastic footprint on my taste in literature. I’m looking for some kind of development and growth of a character, undoubtedly, but I’m not sure whether I have a preference as adventures, fantasy etc. Now I’m keen on a dark academia genre, tomorrow - will see. Nonetheless, Hunger games series definitely influenced my reading behavior in terms of actually enjoying it as a leisure activity 🏹❤️
when i was a kid i had a greek mythology book illustrated in a, let's say, hyperrealistic style lol. and now i study art history and enjoy books with diverse freudian depravities😅
I only just started following you a couple weeks ago, but I really love your videos on both channels. As for a fantasy book that you can get sucked in/escape, Half A Soul may do the trick. It’s cottage core/Jane Austen meets a bit of magic meets social issues. It’s a lovely, sweet read. I was so sad when I finished it. When I was a child I picked up a book called The golden heart (Swedish: Guldhjärtat) from our school library. I have never found that book anywhere else. I never returned it thou so I still have it now about 23 years later. It was a fairytale-ish story about a boy who was going to get the princesses love (ofc) but on the way he met a witch who said that she would help him if he carved out the princesses golden heart, replaced it with a stone, and gave the golden heart to the witch. Well spoiler... _______________________________________________________ That happened... and that is where my love for dark, grim, twisted, dreamlike stories with awful characters that has some weird obsession started.

hey! i'm spanish and my favourite book as a child was fairy oak by italian author elisabetta gnone. its about two twin witches, one has the power of light and the other the power of darkness. the story is so magical and it has so many beautiful illustrations too
The book Sabriel by Garth Nix got me and my brother into fantasy as kids. But it still holds up! Such an incredible dark fantasy book. And it works well as a standalone fantasy because the sequels are about different characters. I wish this book got more love ❤ but also feel like it’s a special secret 😂

for fantasy i recommend 'emily wilde's encyclopedia of faeries' its very charming, has great characters and atmosphere and the worldbuilding is interesting but not intense!!
Laura Gallego’s fantasy books shaped me as a reader. She’s an acclaimed author in Spain! Also, give Angela Carter’s “The passion of the New Eve” a chance. It was weird and messed up, but worth reading if you’re into gender politics

I really like your videos ! But I think in this one, it would have been important to say, that wild garlic is similar to lilies of the valley and autumn crocuses , which are poisonous plant.
You should read La Passe-miroir, it's a fantasy series from a french author and it's SO good. I've already read all of the four books two times. And the world building is so good and it has a little enemies to lovers and huge slow burn.
I can recommend Tress of the emerald sea by brandon sanderson! It has Pirates and magic and it is marvellous and light and has an amazing funny narrator 😊 and a super interesting world to dive into 🤩
I think my reading taste (and imagination in general) was very strongly influenced by a collection of stories by Joan Aiken I kept obsessively loaning from the library 📚 📖❤
