John Dowland has several songs that would alone guarantee him a place among the greats. "Come, heavy sleep" from his First Booke of Songes or Ayres (1597) is certainly one of them. English composers were masters of combining memorable, naturally balanced melodies with expressive and at times daring harmonies - a trait which is very much in evidence here. But even so, we feel that here Dowland achieved a rare perfection, even for him: we get the feeling that maybe Downland just woke up one morning, perhaps after a night spent mostly not asleep, and the song was found fully formed in his mind - like Dowland's 20th century counterpart's, Paul McCartney's Yesterday.
Performed by NOI: Maikki Säikkä, soprano & Tuomas Kourula, lute

These performances are unimpeachably superb, simply gorgeous.... The spirituality of the both the music and the text is fully rendered here.

This piece, with which as a Dowland lover I somehow wasn’t familiar (inexcusable, I know), has touched me deeply. I don’t want to extend myself too much into this, but I have been in a strange state of mind lately. I have been thinking about the inevitability of death, about how my life will be when those I love have passed away. Specifically, I have been thinking a lot about my mother. I’m sorry if this comment seemed inappropriate or a mood-killer, but I think it was relevant because this particular song has brought all these thoughts again, but under a somewhat positive light. The soothing, tender, and motherly quality of Maikki’s voice pierces deep into my heart, while Tuomas’ steady and serene strings make me trustful, almost faithful in something I always thought, deep down: somehow, at the end of the day, everything will be all right, looking through the glass of the bigger scope of things. Everything will be exactly as it should, and I find comfort in that. Moreover, these “phases” I sometimes go through, while difficult in the moment of happening, always end up strengthening my beliefs and my love for mankind in general. Because we all are so small and afraid and needing of love and compassion. Anyway, thank you so very much for this. It just felt right to share this thought right now, but I sincerely apologise if I crossed the line or if it was inadequate.

Hello dear Francesc! (I dare to call you Francesc since you already called me Maikki :) ) First of all, it has been incredebly heartwarming to read your comments, so thank you very much for all of them! I haven’t replied yet any of them because, well, this is the very first time ever that I leave a comment on RU-vid. But now I just felt the urge to reply to you, because this comment wasn’t inadequate at all - in fact, you just put into words my feelings about this song so well, that I never could have done it myself. Death has unfortunately never been a stranger in my life, and that is perhaps the reason why I love this perticular song so deeply. And the older I get, the more comfort it gives to me! I am sincerely so glad if this song has comforted you as well. So let me thank you again for your profoundly beautiful comments, take care!

@@maikkisaikka4099 By all means, call me Francesc, since that’s my name. That’s what names are for, anyway, aren't they 😉? My comments are just a reflection of how good your work make me feel, so I am the one who should be thanking you. And yes, I am comforted by this song, as well as the knowledge that there are beautiful souls out there which are sensitive enough to be able to feel and speak the language of music. Music, nature, and love - these are the things that give me peace of mind. Because, if these three things may exist in our universe, death can only be but a fleeting blink, a coming home of sorts. In so far as this being your first comment, well, there’s a first for everything - the same could also be said about my comments on this channel and Ophelia (which I feel is some sort of sister channel to this one). Disarming beauty can be the key to losing one’s shyness, after all - that, or to complete paralysis! Have a great and happy weekend! Hugs!
