Competition has always been part of piping. It is the road to excellence for band and solo players but, it is extremely demanding.

The bands really give me goosebumps.

Takes me back to cool summer Saturday mornings in 2000-2004 with piper practice in the park down the street from my house. It just feels right and puts the energy into the weekend.

Throws up the metal horns, notices the bandage..."I ripped my nail off with a vegetable peeler but the important thing is that I don't need this finger. Out of all ten of my fingers, that one is the least important for bagpipes, so, it's fine." Ally is the best.

For years I played (the Irish dance competition part of) the Highland Games in September in Estes Park Colorado. Best times of my life. I miss it

That band music sounded like heaven, literally. You were great too; I'm a guitarist, so reading actual musical notes is frightening to me. I love the bagpipes and I have learned so much from you about them. I had a set for 8 years and did it the hard way without that bag-valve thing. Ally, if your note stand is magnetic you can use some small rare earth magnets to hold the papers if you're in a windy environment so they don't fly away.

I went to my first Scottish Games in Pleasanton, CA about the time you made this video. As a newish bagpiper, I was shocked that both solo pipers and bands warmed up and practiced so close to each other. The sounds were so mixed, I didn't know how they could tell their bagpipe from someone else's. I will competing for the first time this coming season (Grade 4 or 5...still to be determined). I'm excited and nervous. 😁

Frustratingly, you made me so interested in bagpipes I would have liked to have made plans to visit the show you promote at the end but, because I don't even live in America it is now far too late for me to make arrangements for it. It would have been pretty wild to fly to America for this just for fun.
