The COMMEDIA of Dante Alighieri, or COMMEDÌA as it was pronounced in his time, is often called LA DIVINA COMMEDIA, in English THE DIVINE COMEDY. This, however, was an addition made by the editor of an early printed edition at the beginning of the 16th century, not the original title. What Dante meant by calling it COMMEDIA was that the language used is “low”, homely, adorned with metaphors from rural life for example, as opposed to the “high”, exalted language of Greek and Roman epic tragedy.
