It kind of shows how far ahead WB/HBO+ is ahead of Paramount in adult animation is that they have shows like Close Enough, which is a wacky comedy show where the entire premise is dealing with adulthood being different than what people expected but doesn't lose its humor. And they're also the home of Tuca a Bertie, which revels in all the hedonism of it all but still has characters and heart.

What this industry and producers desperately need to understand is that animation literally does not solely exist for either children or mature audiences. Animation is a method of storytelling so why does the industry refuse to tell stories NOT explicitly for children or adults? And when it is for adults, why is it made absolutely necessary that the show is comedic in nature? I've seen more shows lately that don't adhere to these "rules" but the industry has had this problem for decades.

Edit: I recently watched the Junji Ito review by Hunter on papameat and I really think adult swim has artistic integrity. Cartoon Network is very similar. They’ve seen long term the benefits of having shows that last through the decades. That’s true art. It’s an investment that pays out in the end. Fuck, I still remember the oldies like Boondocks, Tim and Eric, Robot Chicken, and many many shows that have been on adult swim at one point or another, family guy, South Park, american dad, the works! There’s a lot of hit and misses, misses aplenty. But they aren’t insane like these other platforms, literally, they hit the same ball expecting a different outcome. At least Adult Swim has misses but they’re all DIFFERENT for the most part.

It's still kinda jarring how they went for that "Facebook avatar" style, and literally gave up on the legs. Looks unnatural, even in-universe. I'm almost sure they wanted to make the animation look shitty and crude only because South Park does it, not because of budget reasons, because I bet a single episode of this garbage show probably has more budget than any amateur internet animation project of the last decade. Either way, I can appreciate superb animation tied to a bad story the same way I can appreciate a great story told with limited animation. This show has neither. It sucks at every possible aspect. Even the audio mixing sucks.

With shows like Primal, Invincible, and Arcane, I'd be on board for more adult cartoons that aren't comedies. We've already got dozens upon dozens of those.

Harley Quinn is another example...well it is a comedy but it's also an action cartoon at the same time.

I know this isn’t a Cartoon but, Aggretsuko is another example of a good adult show that the first season was more comedy focused but as it went delved into interesting topics in season 2 and 3. While season 4 had some questionable decisions mostly revolving around the “boy blunder” Haida. The fleshing out of Ton was handled incredibly well (Fenneko).

All you gotta do to make jack r rated is change he robot oil and alien goo red and the true brutality of jack is insane. Which the final season did beautifully with his first human kill being hi-lighted by the vibrant red of the girls blood. No fountain of blood no guts just a smear of crimson and his honor as a human sinks further into oblivion. But this was only possible because a skilled creator cared and put in the effort which is like saying to win a foot race you need to run faster then the other guys. Easier said than done

I'd also add SuperJail! and Xavier Renegade Angel to your list of shows that show that adult animation doesn't have to be complex to be good. The former basically exists as an excuse to set up intricately choreographed sequences of cartoon violence that amount to Tom and Jerry meet the Grand Guignol, the latter is basically what would happen if an improv troupe comprised entirely of philosophy majors dropped acid and decided to make a movie in Second Life, but both are absolutely genius pieces of writing and animation. We could almost think of shows like Smiling Friends, SuperJail!, And XRA as smart comedy in disguise as dumb comedy made by smart people, with shows like Fairview, Santa Claus Inc, and Washingtonia being dumb comedy made by dumb people who think they're making smart comedy. There are few things more grating on this earth than an idiot who thinks they're a genius.

Archer started out as just a Spy Agency office comedy. Sounds about as derivative as you can get but the excellent voice cast and writing led to it being a critical and commercial success. The same can be said for why American Dad succeeded and The Cleveland Show failed.

To me. It pisses me off how much the Western Animation industry doesn't try to compete for quality animation. It sticks with this overly simplistic, gross, simple aesthic, while. It's Japanese contemporaries are starting to get more and more adult, hell more than half of anime is more mature that isn't just " HEY WE MADE A NSFW, 18+ ". These Western Animated shows play it too safe and copy eachother, meanwhile. Japan has Uzaki-Chan wants to hang out, Kill la kill ( the themes of it ), Ishuzoku Reviewers which is for an adult audiance that is genuinely funny with great writing and being a bit of a sitcom, Panty and Stocking ( a parody of western cartoon shows of the early 2000's ), and even earlier titles like Gundam and Macross Saga.... Western animation needs to stop hiring diversity hires, learn to make good comics to help fund their cartoons, and MAKE IT CREATOR OWNED. If copied the JP industry, but actually be pretty good or decent while Marvel shit and DC shit is tanking, it would make some money. Japan when not making purely NSFW, can make some amazing or interesting adult animation. Japan doesn't even opt for cheap simplistic designs on average. Hell there was that one adult show that was made by the same people who made Hello Kitty, made Aggretsuko. That show was pretty good. I hate how the West is so behind in embracing animation, without using it as a cheap CGI landscape or over-digitalized marvel character. It looks gross to me and kind of uncanny if you do artwork of any kind. Japan is willing to experiment, AMERICA ISN'T. Japan has been the best user of... 2D Animation, America is focused only on 3D due to recyclability, and over dependence on reboots or clones. Like how we got an American Dad and Family Guy, despite American dad was supposed to fill that void of Family Guy.

I still find american to be more appealing and experimental in terms of artstyles since simplistic and detailed can appear in western shows in different cartoons. Think "Smiling Friends" vs. "She-ra: Princesses of power." Maybe even think of Hilda vs. Kipo. also the only thing stopping shows from being creator-driven are executives. I have heard this from multiple professional animators and character designers. They hire the right artists but they don't hire the right executives.

IMO politics is best handled the more abstracted it gets from the real world. There's a reason why the more political episodes of shows like Star Trek TOS or The Twilight Zone still hold up: when you abstract it away from Party X versus Party Y and get more into the philosophical meat of it all you touch on more universal truths and questions that people can actually talk about without going for each others' throats.

While you are mostly correct, seasons 20 and 24 were very politically-heavy seasons. Season 25 (barring the first episode) seemed like a nice return-to-form for South Park

i think it's because much of the higher ups in entertainment, are the same people who see animation as 'for kids', so their idea of an 'adult cartoon' is what you see here. thats why that comedy central pr statement states the 'necessary' things in an adult cartoon like that because that is genuinely all they know. really violent, abhorrent humor, politics and a crude style because 'that's all adult animation is' there is a shocking amount of people in a powerful position in entertainment that genuinely have that ignorant understanding of animation.

I bounced off the first episode because the setup part was like 'Oh, so it's American Dad again'

From what Ive seen with a quick google search animation most closely related to what we see today has always been primarily aimed towards children, and the "golden age of animation" was spearheaded by Disney, Warner Bros., etc; I do think animation has value whether its for children or adults but it doesnt look like it, historically, was for adults

Helluva boss is…okay. It still has that too much adult content on it like the swearing and stuff, which gets obnoxious especially the humor. I see it more pg-13 then for adults, too much humor I will hear from a teenager really. When Brandon Rodger is behind the scripting, it’s good, when Vizi is behind it, it’s bad. I see some good and bad elements of the show. Hazbin hotel is garbage… I am sorry to you fans, but it’s not my cup of tea. (Prepares for the butchering of people :D)

@@QueenMasumi I personally love Helluva Boss though I've only seen the pilot for Hazbin Hotel since I don't have any streaming services. I think it's perfectly fine to dislike something if it's not the kinda content you generally enjoy and yeah, I can see how the swearing can get old to people. Tbf though, I was raised pretty passively when it comes to that so I don't see much of an issue because I don't generally put any extra emphasis on what are, for the most part, just words to me. I do, however, try to respect those that don't like or aren't used to the fact that I'm actually more likely to swear in a good mood then bad

@@QueenMasumi i fully agree with on hazbin hotel being okay. I feel its way too overhyped where even the creator realised her mediocre story writing and building character personalities. Her having Brandon as co creator shows how she acknowledged it and even being inspired by his humour and skits. Sure, Huluva boss may not be at its peak, but the direction vizi is going for i have confidence the show will steadily improve to having two genius story directors. Even with saying this, i love hullava boss.

TtTE was disturbing as hell, at least to my adult eyes. It's all about conformity and complete obedience. Anyone hint of independent thought is bitterly crushed (remember Henry?). The trains are all in constant fear of not working hard enough and being declared useless --- but there's also a strict pecking order and at one point Oliver actually _kills_ a freight car who annoys him (S.C. Ruffey). The Fat Controller covers it up...

@@MaoRatto They don't heavily rely on pop culture though. it'll age like fine wine because they're not commenting on the "Society of today" or anything topical really, just some really funny cutoff gags and jokes. There are a few instances there wehre they do but overall it's just great writing

Tron:Uprising is a fantastic middle ground. It’s incredibly stylish and though it was unfortunately cancelled early, a great story that any age can enjoy

Yes but a lot of anime's success is down to its different style of writing/storytelling. Even if they were to make a full action series, I honestly don't think they'd have the ability to compete with action anime, at least in the 2D sphere of animation.

Still, there are excellent exceptions to the rule. I’m going to just give you a ton of recommendations, so bear with me- In the realm of kids shows, Adventure Time is actually really fucking good, especially past the first couple seasons, with a post apocalyptic, sad, and bittersweet story, well written characters, and interesting themes, in addition to a style I personally, IN MY SUBJECTIVE OPINION, I far prefer to anime. Over the garden wall is a masterclass in atmosphere and sense of place. Gravity falls is great, and I recommend you just start watching. Here on RU-vid, despite it being kind of edgy a lot of the time, Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss both show great promise, and the latter I think has immense potential. And finally, Bojack horseman and Moral Orel are both fantastic adult animation shows. Bojack is deeply depressing, deals with hedonism, addiction, et cetera. Moral Orel is even bleaker, free on RU-vidand I recommend you just jump into it.

Hgs had a vision, it probably wasn't very thought out and set in stone, a general idea. Protect nature. Masculine men can be mean, judgemental, and narrow minded. Lgbt people exist. Follow your dreams. Two girls are badass. Hgs screams "I want to create a magical adventure like harry potter, but more inclusive" And this just seems to have "adult animation comedy" as a theme, along with vague politics.

I feel bad for the animators and people who worked on HGS, people with a vision trying a project they were not experienced enough to fulfill, whose careers might take a big hit.

Gotta give credit when credit is due, at least HGS had characters with legs, and that's hilariously the bare minimun standard now
