This is a very quick video I put together that shows how to capture and process Comet NEOWISE (Official name: C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE)). The reason I made this video so quickly is the comet is a time-sensitive event. The sooner you can go out and see/photograph it, the better! Comets are fickle and often break apart, so if you have a clear morning (or evening next week), make this one a priority!!
If you think you may have trouble finding the comet, check out this video by my friends over at ‪@GalacticHunter‬ : • How to easily find Com...

An excellent video! I did try imaging with a lens that wasn’t as fast, and that enabled me to run a longer exposure with a narrower f/stop. I used the exact same star adventurer tracker you had and got pretty good results. You’re right, this comet was bright enough to image with or without a tracking mount.

Fantastic shot of Neowise and I'm glad you got the shot of it. I didn't get the chance to see it or photograph the comet due to clouds and haze here in Scotland. Missing the comet makes me even more happy that I saw Comet Hale Bopp back in 1997. Comet Hale Bopp was bright and I saw it more than a few times. A neighbour came to door and asked me what is that in the sky? I told him it's Comet Hale Bopp and it was bright. Hopefully another bright comet comes soon again. Did you get another shot of Neowise? Where is Neowise now? Thanks for sharing and stay safe!

Do you think it would be possible under a "bright" pre-dawn sky, to get the details of the ion tail?
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 4 года назад
Based on my experiences shooting it twice now, no. If I really stretched my few shots that I took when it was still dark-ish, I could make out the ion tail in the noise, but I didn't get enough data to bring it out well in a stack. Stacking a bunch of shots from the "bright" part of the morning, I see absolutely no sign of the ion tail, it gets completely lost in a blue sky.

A timely video. Haven't tried capturing the comet with a Star Tracker
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 4 года назад
In the end, I didn't really need it here because my exposures were very short due to the sky brightness. But if I had arrived 45 minutes earlier and caught the comet lower (and with much darker sky), I would have tried for longer exposures (up to 10 seconds). In that case, I think the star tracker would be a big help to get good data.

What's the recommended software for comet stacking? I'm failing with DSS because there aren't enough stars in the shots. Thanks!
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 4 года назад
You can try Photoshop. File->Scripts->Load files into Stack... Choose automatically align. Then select all layers and from the layers menu Smart Objects-> Create smart object. And finally Smart objects-> stack mode, Median... Another thing you can try is converting the raw files to tiff before stacking in DSS. Sometimes it helps it find the stars when there are not many. Lastly, make sure to play around with the star selection threshold in DSS under advanced register settings. Hope one of these helps.

Hi Nico, thanks for the tipps on this one. After watching your nebula with a dslr video and now this one, I tried to snap the comet and was really happy with the result: www.flickr.com/photos/189004970@N06/50110141248/in/dateposted-public/ btw: You can also see it quite well not just before sun-RISE but also shortly after sun-SET, at least here in central europe. that evening at around 11:00-11:30pm you could see it with just some binoculars while the last light from the sun was still there. Then at 1am when that shot was taken, it needed longer exposures and I was barely able to find it with the naked eye / binoculars. Given the gear I've used, I'm more then happy with the results of my first try, but will try it again on the weekend.
