With the event now live (Friday Feb. 16 2024) I can now see the Minegumo & the other ships in the Java Sea event are available for direct purchase. I misunderstood the wording when making this video, sorry. Disregard my criticisms regarding lootbox ships for this one.
I do not know if you are reading it, PQ, but this is the first time in a long while I am seeing you playing torpedo boat the right way. Aggressive, spotting, using concealment and most importantly using guns and smoke OFFENSIVELY aka forcing enemies to pop theirs as well or retreat and be bombarded. This is the OG way to play Shimakaze, btw. 12km tubes and the only difference in captain skills was RPF (poor man´s radar) and grease the gears instead of superintendant and torp speed. I would really like to see you taking on Shima with this mindset and show it here as well. Because even I, a 55%-er in randoms and 58%-er in ranked I have over 62% WR in both randoms and ranked (though ranked was my favourite gametype, hence over 500 Shima ranked game - basically when I got tired of my team DDs throwing/dying too often, I just took out Shima and ranked out. And this was the exact behavioral patters leading to success and victory. Have fun and I will be happy if this reaches you!
Would you post a video showing how to play torpedo ships? It might help those of us who are DD mains, especially since you noted that PQ does not play them correctly.

Love how you mention the configuration! We need more ships with different "setups" that both gives pros and cons Also go play Velos! 45 sec reload on torps is fun and thats without Adrenaline rush :P
The reaction time on those torps is one of the worst among all destroyers in the game; only 20km shimakaze is worse. It's good to see you managed to nail some potatoes with those torps, but I think I'll pass, especially since this thing is going to be behind the paywall.
She a YOLO torp boat with sticky rice instead of risotto. The 15km torps are there to peel spuds, deny lanes and force people from cover so still useful though.
@@alphax4785 Something tells me, though, that people are going to have a bad time yoloing in that boat, considering the hull itself is regular IJN DD, meaning 35 knots of base speed and no other gimmicks aside from concealment.
Stealthy 15km torps with no drawbacks would be stupid, Im glad thats not a thing. Its okay at T10 for a Gearing / Somers but at T9 it would be too much, especially with that alpha. And its still usable, you can still hit clunky BBs on their broadside, you can easily hit unsuspecting CVs without getting to close. And of course you can force ships away from islands. I think its well balanced, unique and will be pretty strong in good hands.
The torps are basically shima 20kms and 8kms, although I think the 6km torps have better concealment than the F3 shima torps. Realistically you only want to use the 15km torps when you're not in position to use the short range ones as the 15km torps kinda suck. 84knot stealthier F3 torps are a funny meme though, faster torp reload too I believe!
@@AdplosiveI use the F3s almost exclusively in my Shima. With a bit of damage you’re down to Halland base reload. Prints dev strikes. Though I hardly play randumbs. It’s ranked where small teams make a sneaky dd fun to play.
Jager is my favorite ship in the game so seeing another tier 9 torp DD with excellent concealment makes me very excited. I'll probably get this, but nothing will beat being able to spam so many torps like the Jager, even if they are lower damage.
I just got this ship from a random free java sea crate and was a bit confused how to play since i am a BB main, so now my task is to watch as many DD videos to learn something :D
I have 52 battles and I'm having great fun and success (80% solo WR). No luck with the crates, but fortunately I had enough dubs from ranked to get it for almost free. Had to buy an additional 3k dubs :/ The 15km torpedoes are more effective than many people suggest, and if you're good enough to put yourself in a position to use the 6.5km ones, you become quite deadly. She's pretty good at fighting DDs. I wouldn't be surprised if most of my frags were on them ! The ship is fairly well balanced and can be interesting for torpedo DDs enjoyers. For the price though, especially if you have Yuugumo, it can be skipped.
Considering this is an event about the Battle of the Java Sea and WG anounced tier 9 Minegumo and tier 7 Jupiter’42, both ships participated in the battle of Java Sea so as a typical WG event go, I guess as a F2P you can earn enough tokens for the tier 7 Jupiter’42 and if you want to get Minegumo, you need to gamble with doubloons for more tokens
Or you can just buy it out right. I decided to buy a bundle of 10 containers and got it in crate #8. Plays nicely, best T9 is Benham imo. Lucky enough to get her in a Santa Crate a couple of years ago.
when i first saw this mentioned on youtube (not one of PQs videos so i did not watch it) i thought great they are adding mine laying ships to the game ... even if only as a player event i think they could be fun and a great counter to subs
The Java Sea event is probably going to go like the event that featured the Jager. If so, looking forward. Side note: l gave a like for the CV kill - and a Nakhimov too!
Just a slight reminder for pronunciation: Minegumo - the "ne" sounds just like the "ne" in nevsky anyways this one looks interesting, with alternative torp option available in match if it's not so popular maybe those fast torps can stay as a surprise at close ranges
I doubt you can just earn it maybe they might let you earn 2/3 of it but that last little bit you gonna hafta shell out some cash as far as fast hard hitting torps i own the yukikaze with a torp build 8kil 80 knot torps that hit for 21k second most played ship after my Massachusetts
Its pretty solid but also not very special. It essentially does a specific thing pretty well but I will say when I first got it my first 4 games were all dev strikes and half the time while in smoke. Bb's WILL wreck it no matter what it's too wide for over pens
Would love to come back and play this game because there is nothing like it out there. But CV and Subs really killed it for me on top of their shitty practices.
Hey pq any idea if the old battle pass will come back. New ish player and I've run out of all blue economy bonuses so I'm struggling to get credits and so on.
Yeah what happened to the battle passes? They are now so much worse than they used to be. I'm happy to be saving doubloons at least as I used to splash out on every battle pass for the upgrade and now I don't.
No. They learned their lesson when they converted camos. So many players got thousands of them. I currently have 900 blue ship xp bonuses. So don't expect to get a lot of them ever.
@micklane7306 yea I saw that but yea I've completely run out credit and xp bonuses and I feel un motivated considering my next goal was a super ship it just seems completely unreasonable to try as I don't even have the bonuses to not loose massive volumes of credits in said super ship
Interesting ship but not compelling, slight concealment advantage over Yugumo, dont see the torps are significant vs Yugumo. If they put in santa crates I guess I will get it.
I got minegumo by purchasing random bundles with only 25 Java tokens yesterday. I was planning to purchase Perth tier 6 CA with 30 java tokens in Armory instead chose to gamble on bundles.

I have Minegumo and have played three games. I find it very, very weak, even compared with Jager. The #3 torpedos are very slow and easy to dodge, and the #4 torps have nearly unusably short range. Jager is MUCH more comfortable to play; at least the torpedos are usable.
I have played about 30 games and its ok. Not OP and also not bad. Its no problem to be 6.5km from BB and torp it, BB just have to be running into you not the other side.
@@logica1one Jager is fun because it is so weak and so skill intense. I like Minegumo; it’s smoke and guns are better, but it’s weak because its torpedos are so short ranged. I can easily get into range, but it really reduces flexibility and increases vulnerability to radar. I like Jager much better than Minegumo.
There is no reason to play this ship over Yugumo unless you really want to play a premium ship. Both type of torpedoes are vastly inferior: Yugumo's 12km torps have more damage, more speed and better reaction time than Minegumo's 15km torpedoes. And the F3's are just better than the 6.5km ones on Minegumo in every single way. So all you get is the flexibility to swap to a torpedo that sucks slightly less depending on the situation. Save your money and just play Yugumo instead. You even get the option to use TRB instead of smoke there.
WG broke their promise in WOWS that no premium ship would be more powerful than the tech tree counterparts , Its not about the game anymore its about filling those loot boxes and selling overpowered premiums they have the right to nerf when they want , This game used to be really good now its a shit-show of gimmicks and fat whales.
The dual range/speed switching should be standard on many if not all DDs. The real Minegumo was completed in April 1938 and is part of the Asashio class.
It was a year ago that I played like crazy to get the Jager (helped a lot by assymetric battles being active at the time). It was completely free and is now my nost played ship and a fantastic credit maker. Here's hoping for a similar event.
The Mineguno seems to play a lot like my Tier VIII AL Yukikaze which has the exact same 5.4 km detection, the same gun reload and traverse speed. As far as torpedoes go, the Yukikaze does lack the 15 km ones, but the torps on the Yukikaze do go out all the way to 8 km, they do the same damage and go the same 85 knots as the Minegumo´s torps. I may try to get the Minegumo if it´s not too hard or expensive to get those 160 tokens. If not, oh well, I have the Yukikaze.
Yeah but Yukikaze is tier 8 this is tier 9 so you will mostly face tier 9/10. Torp selecetion is poor. If it had 12km and 8km torps it would be awesome. But those 15km torps are shit and 6.5km range is to close to ships. Isnt better to have just Yugumo with standard 12km torps? Instead of Yukikaze I prefer Harekaze. That ships has just great DPM, concealment and torps are usable.
I’m waiting for an aircraft carrier submarine destroyer with twenty 20” guns with a 1s reload, 3km concealment, 20km radar, and 60 high-damage torpedoes that reload every 30 seconds. You know, just something basic 😂
Nice video PQ. I dont know. I like playing Torp Boats but their only problem is they get obliterated awfully fast by players that have patience at the most ungodly level. Ive noticed lately that people just don't want to move because they're so scared of being killed in a video game. Now when I say that, just don't be a Stupid YOLO and rush in to die, but people just don't like to move anymore.
F3s are viable for gunboat Yugumo build, they are much more useful against DDs and faster reload time compensates for not taking torp reload mod, and having Shima DPM at tier 9 is actually nice. As for 12KM torps I don't think it's worth it, if you want to spam 12km torps just play a Shima.
I wasn’t going to get any tier 11 boats but I did get Yamigiri! It’s really fun and you can change torps while in battle. Makes it fun to go after BB’s with no hydro switch to the 8km x 84 knot torps! Just awesome! Thanks for the video PQ! I’ll definitely look into this ship as well. I really enjoying the Hayate with the buff as well. o7
It depends on what you want from a DD and what is your playstyle. All standard DD lines are VERY different from each other: Shima - good guns with 2/3 at the back, long reload though. Best for fighting retreats, best torps and concealment in game. Played best like video above. Gearing - better guns and torp range then Shima, though less torps and worse concealment. Daring - Short smokes for aggressive play and cover of retreat (no smokefarming, though). Has heal and personal hydro. Short range torps, though. Harugumo - great DPM, besides smoke no other tools then pure guns. Just one torpedo rack, though has TRB. Z52 - Kinda "do all, excell at nothing". Though 6 km hydro range is a massive advantage and threat to others in terms of cap fighting. If you want longer range fighting, then FR DDs are your way; but each line has their own gimmicks. And you need to learn each line separately
Are you using a mod for the ship angling viewer (lower left-hand of screen). Seen it from time to time in your videos. If so, could you provide the name of it please.
What does WoT have the option to swap consumables prior to game start! I'm waiting for this, as I believe it would make games much more tactical. So you can adapt to CV/Subs, many dds, just gun ships etc games. As it just luck at the moment, if you build you chose is the most optimal..
9:04 how's that any different from subs? Unseen enemy launching a bunch of torpedoes with little to no interaction? Sure, subs need a hydro to detect them and at much shorter ranges. But they don't telegraph their position every once in a while and they can't set fires alongside floods. Enter announced upcoming nerfs to shotgunning and torpedo arming time, enter some more submarine surveillance consumables and you've just got a flimsy, lower hp, different kind of torpedo boat that everyone's out to get. That's my sub defence thesis, don't shout me all at once! 😁 Love your content, keep it up!
