Comica VM30 - Is this the first of a kind? A Wireless Shotgun mic!!

I wasn't expecting this mic to be that great, but actually, over time, it grew on me because of one thing .... it's convenience of use.
Whether you use it on camera, boomed or handheld, you can choose to use it wired or wireless. It works over a fairly long distance, but if you turn your back on the camera, the receiver does get blocked. The old Rode wireless did the same. It has to be the frequency that these mics use.
Anyway, I think that this is actually a first .... a wireless shotgun mic and could be a really useful addition to the mic bag. I does a decent job in rejecting sounds around but for say, studio type stuff, it might be just a bit noisy at 75dB. I prefer my mics to be nearer to 80 if I'm honest, but outside, for vlogging and videoing all around the place, this would work extremely well and is better than using an omni lavalier with regards to noise rejection.
See what you think when you hear it. It's an OK mic that could be very useful.

Hey, Kevin. You too. I went through a rough patch of fainting etc so was taken in for an ablation which turned into a bit more once the got me in. A remapping of heart electrics and a reset. Sounds like they took the battery out for 30 seconds and rebooted me! Result. Heart is regular and I don’t feel bad. Hope to see you again soon. Best wishes.

Thanks Phil. Health has come back and the heart operation seems to have done the job. I am permanently feeling my pulse to check a) it’s still there. b) it’s regular. Been taking things easy and not stressing so I feel massively better thanks. I enjoyed working on this video as well.

Hi Ian hope you're feeling OK sorry to hear you've been under the weather. Great video demo of the mic, definitely an unusual concept but i think it will catch on and other manufacturers will introduce their version. Listening on my Tablet it sounded very good,nice and clear, and worked surprisingly well in the wind the deadcat worked great. On a side note i struggle to get the audio level on my AX53 right, the level meter isn't the easiest to use. Best wishes stay safe Jon

Thanks Jon. Yes, the level meter on the ax53 is too small. I get audio around 1 bar down from max and normalise it in post. This audio had no treatment whatsoever, so this mic has the potential to sound a lot better than my review. I don’t try to demo the best …. I just show what it gives with no processing in less than ideal conditions. Health is improving following the heart operation thanks. Trouble is, operations on the heart make you feel ‘dodgy’ and a bit ‘fearful’ so I’ve been taking things really easy. Took my time making this video so less stress.

Thank you Lee. I had a heart operation and have been taking things easy for a while now. Had Atrial Fibrillation so had an ablation and heart reset and what they called ‘remapped’. It worked beautifully but I felt it best to keep my head down for a while in case it all started up again.

Is it cold? 😆. Great video thank you. I've always wondered if a shotgun Mic would be good for a podium or public speakers speak. Usually the problem with podium microphones you have people that get really close to the microphone and talk really loud and then you'll get people who are way back from the marker phone and talk really softly so you have to set there and monitor each speaker to turn up the gain or lower the gain I wonder if a shotgun might would help with that?

Hi. It’s so good that video isn’t shown on ‘smellovision’ because I’m surrounded by farms, or on ‘feelavision’ because my face was freezing off!! So I dressed like a teddy. I don’t think shotguns are great for general public because as you can see on my video, at one point outside, I moved the mic a bit (close to the wind test) and my voice quickly died away due to its directionality. An omni might suit better for people not used to mics. They reject wind better and don’t mind where you point them! Or fix the mic on a stand so that they don’t touch it. The only problem with that is many people then bend down in order to speak into it. This mic works pretty well that way as long as anyone speaking doesn’t feel the need to bend over to speak ……..

The D4 is a better mic I think technically. The rejection characteristics of my Comica were slightly uneven on the sides, where one side seemed more treble laden than the other. Not a big deal on a mono mic though really. The big selling point with this one is really its versatility because it’s fast to set up and the wireless aspect makes it easy and less cumbersome. The D4 is what I feel is a more pedigree laden mic that has a robust sound with less self noise. For pure audio, I’d use the D4 but for quick vlog stuff, this one!

Hi Ian, sorry to hear you've not been 100%, hope you've got things under control now :), my amlodipine keeps me going :). Thanks for the video, I was looking at the D4 but as per you're reply, it's a bit too big for the Osmo Action, so it'll be the mini me thinks :) Don't you think Ian that companies should at least build in the option for all this wireless kit to have replaceable batteries, either bespoke battery packs they sell or the option to drop in AA's or AAA's, I just find it sad that after a couple of years of heavy use when the built in battery begins to fail, the whole package dies with it :( That's why, even though I'm excited about the DJI wireless mic pack, with the built in batteries it's putting me off them. What do you reckon Ian? Take care and best wishes David, oh and p.s. maybe you could do with a 'new' stone, have you tried 'malachite' it's meant to be good for healing :) ttfn :)
