Coming Home and Cleaning Up after Hurricane Helene 

Jen is such a trooper handling her first hurricane by her self!!!

Jen had a big task at home in a new state. I'm happy to see that it wasn't worse for you. It's heartbreaking to see what has happened to so many others.

Jacob, I'm incredibly relieved to see you home with Jen, and you guys sitting on the couch playing with the stuffed animals put a smile on my face and made me a little sweaty around the eyes. We didn't even lose power in my little slice of Florida, although people close by got the hell knocked out of them. I've heard there's ten feet of sand on the road a mile from me. So yeah. I'm going to count my blessings. A great big virtual hug to you both, and much love.

Hey Jacob as someone that did fire and flood restoration for 6 years I just want to say thank you very much for thinking of the other people and trying to handle it yourself. But you're right Just suck up the water and put fans down there for a week or two spray some decontaminant

I would be doing a serious look over the foundation of the house because all that water can cause the ground underneath to settle and cause the foundation to crack .

Jenny Penny was brave during the hurricane.

I realize this is after the fact, but a tip as folks are working on cleaning up floodwater, please wear boots and don't do it barefoot. After Katrina, people got sick and even died after being in the floodwater. Glad you are safe!

I was able to get to get to my daughter yesterday thanks to the info from jenn. My wife and I were very thankful for yall. Sylva was finally starting to Come around. We are planning to come volunteer this weekend. If anyone needs help!

This is one of those things that no matter how hard as you prepare its the unknowns that we cant prepare for. I still remember the Flood we had here in Macon in 94 and the Mother Day Torando some years back. My heart goes to everyone in NC. I travel to places towns that hurricane wiped away and met some incredible people. My heart breaks for them. One thing this hurricane didnt destroy is strength and kindness of humanity. I pray everything that was loss is renewed again. Taking off New Week to Go Help out Family in Asheville. Stay safe Jacob.

Best Wishes from Blount County TN. We escaped serious flooding. I have spent time in many of the places affected including Boone and Elizabethton. I lived in Ashville and worked in Biltmore Village. Normally, you can take a running start and nearly jump over the Swannoa river! Hoping everything is fixed soon, hoping to see you on this side of the Smokies soon my friend.

As a fellow home owner with a basement, water is always an issue in some way or another for us. I'm in South Jersey so I'm not affected by the storm but a helpful tip. When we get water in our basement we use the shop vacuum. Once the canister is full place the sump pump in the shop vac canister with a hose out the window or bilco doors. This way you don't have to move or pick up that heavy canister around. Glad to hear you and your family are safe. Be safe out there.

I live in a "Frequent Hurricane" area. They are such weird storms. On one hand, you have days of advanced warning (unlike, for example, earthquakes) in which to get ready, yet they always seem to throw in curveballs for which you can never adequately prepare, despite all your best efforts. Stay safe and best wishes for the recovery efforts to everyone affected.

Jen you did great!!! Jacob I’m glad you were able to make it home!!! My friends son lost his home he was sleeping and 10 feet from his bed a tree came through the house almost killing him. I am so thankful you’re ok! My sister and her fiancé were lucky too 🙏🙏🙏🙏 for everybody.

Good, you made it. Supposed to be up there but staying away, y'all don't need tourists and at the moment I am useless for helping out (injured). Man, I can not believe what has happened to one of my favorite places in the country. Even the places not touched are isolated. Almost guilty the storm gave us (Macon, Ga) a pass and beat the hell out of everything around us. Be safe all. I remember Ivan, that is the one that went north, wrapped around itself and ended up back in the gulf then came back for round 2. Was on a bike trip for that one. Had to "run" from it in two different directions! THis one reminds me of 1994 and Alberto sitting on us for days, not moving, dumping 28 inches of rain on us... Ugh. Like I said, be safe all.

I remember the fathers day flood of 2018 here in the upper peninsula of Michigan. It caused massive problems as well, washed away roads and devastated the community. It was a freak occurrence, a weather system just stayed stationary over the area and dumped rain all night. Hoping for a quick recovery down in North Carolina but from experience it doesn't happen quickly. :(

Hi Jacob and Jen! My family and I drove to Gatlinburg from Ohio. We left Thursday the 26th and stayed till Sunday 29th. Gatlinburg/ Pigeon Forge area got a lot of rain Thursday night into Friday. It cleared out Friday afternoon and weather was fine after. We stayed in a cabin just outside of Gatlinburg in the mountains. First time there and we loved it. Some of the roads inside the Smokies park were closed but from what we could see, it was ok on the Parkway from Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge was fine. Not being from the area, I'm not sure about the surrounding countryside's roads. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back next year My thoughts and prayers are with all those that lost their lives, homes, animals, etc. It breaks my heart. Safe travels guys. God Bless everyone In Western North Carolina and East Tennessee.❤️🙏❤️

Glad The Bunker was saved, hopefully, all is good & getting better. I worked for Verizon most cellular towers are on a generator, and the towers can withstand high winds. Cellular signals carry both mobile internet data and voice. I forgot to mention a mobile cell signal station is being set up in most locations if those generators I mentioned didn't kick on.

I am glad that you Jen the cats and the house are fine.

I live in Kentucky and we haven't had AT&T phone service since Friday..luckily I only lost electricity for around 20 minutes and a piece of aluminum siding blew off my house..I know us that didn't suffer damage and loss are definitely blessed..my heart goes out to everyone that has been affected by this horrible hurricane..💔❤️

That "all roads are closed" usually pertains to outside traffic. If you are a local headed home they will usually work with you within reason. People from outside the are will be barred from the area. They want to cut down on excess traffic, looters, and looky-lous. All stuff that makes the rescue and recovery process harder.

That could have been much worse. Thankfully you had the foresight to have shelves in there. I'm glad you guys are safe, despite jenns pain. I hope your clean up goes smoothly and you guys are able to get back to normal soon. Take care yall!

It is important to have multiple ways to receive warnings. I strongly suggest getting a weather radio . It gives more than just weather alerts including boil water and evacuation notices. I personally have a Midland WR120B, and it works well. Also, work on an emergency communications plan. Anything that requires infrastructure is subject to failure. My family utilizes GMRS, and I am also an Amateur Radio operator.
