The jeep was originally developed by Overland, a US subsidiary of Austin, for use on farms. The prototype was used in a Laurel and Hardy film, towing a 37mm AT gun in the film. Overland being a small company and (worse) a subsidiary of a British firm didn't get the contract, Willies and Ford produced most of them.The basic chassis design was used for the original land rover (which was again for farms, hence all the PTO options, the driver sat in the middle). The SAS with these jeeps were dropped into France for D Day to link up with the resistance and cause trouble, which they did.
