Commercial Breaks: ABC Kids (via KTBS Shreveport, LA) - August 27, 2011 (the block's final day)

August 28, 2011 came the downfall of a Saturday Morning block for kids in the world of TV without cable, the end of ABC Kids (which I consider the DIsney Channel without cable and Internet). A week after ABC Kids closed, Litton's Weekend Adventure took over it time slots, and five years later, other Saturday Morning blocks for kids got taken over by Litton Entertainment.
Here's the list of shows that were aired on ABC Kids's final broadcast (and what happened to them on TV):
The Emperor's New School:
First aired on ABC Kids in January 2006 as a three day event with Disney Channel, Toon Disney, and ABC Kids. It stopped airing on DIsney Channel around late 2008. For Toon DIsney, the channel continued to air the show until it rebranded to Disney XD in 2009, which was the last network to air the show until October 2012.
The Replacements:
First aired on Disney Channel in July 2006, aired on ABC Kids in Fall 2006. The show stopped airing on Disney Channel in 2010 following the channel's rebrand at that time. The show aired on Disney XD from February 2009 to December 2009. ABC Kids's closure marks the last time the show was aired on TV in the United States.
That's So Raven:
First aired on Disney Channel and ABC Kids in January 2003. The show stopped airing on Disney Channel in 2010, following the network's rebrand and didn't air the show again until the Disney Replay block in 2013. It's last weeks on ABC Kids had two episodes of the show aired per week.
Hannah Montana:
First aired on Disney Channel in March 2006, and on ABC Kids in fall 2006. In 2007, ABC Kids was put on an automated loop, leaving the block to only the first season of the show, while seasons 2-4 to be exclusive to home network, Disney Channel.
The Suite Life of Zack and Cody:
First aired on Disney Channel in March 2005, ABC Kids in September 2005, Disney XD when it launched in February 2009, and believe it or not, Toon Disney in September 2008. The show stopped airing on Disney Channel in 2010, following the channel's rebrand (I think), before returing to the network for Disney Replay in 2013. The show stopped airing on Disney XD in July 2014, and of course ABC Kids on it's last day August 27, 2011.

Today marks 10 years since the "ABC Kids" Saturday-morning block on American Broadcasting Company ended. This also marks the day in 2011 when ABC completely axed Saturday-morning cartoons. A week after ABC Kids ended, the Saturday-morning cartoon block on ABC was replaced by Litton's Weekend Adventure.

ABC Kids was originally known as "Disney's One Saturday Morning", which was launched in 1997. In 2002, Disney's One Saturday Morning was rebranded to ABC Kids.

The Replacements was my favorite thing outside of WPVI Action News, the Charlie Brown stuff and NASCAR when it came to ABC programs that were on back when I was 8 back in 2011.... damn, things have changed. ABC was the best Big 4 network to ever cover cartoons... PERIOD. Good thing I have The Weekenders on DVD...

I was 18 at the time, my local ABC station (WCTI/WTVD) didn’t air the final broadcast of ABC Kids due to the live coverage of Hurricane Irene

Lol the first commercial shown is for Phineas and Ferb's movie. If ABC Kids had actually updated its lineup instead of going on autopilot for years P&F would've been a perfect fit for it. Probably more "educational" than the kidcoms they tried to pass off as E/I.

You’re right, if Disney kept on putting educational anecdotes into shows that came during 2007 and after… the block would have never ended, but the company did not want any more of their shows to do that sort of thing. However, if the network’s current deal with Litton expires with no renewal… content from Disney Channel will likely come back to ABC but it might have to be from Mickey Mornings.

Wow, so that was the final broadcast I saw! I remember it being shown on a Sunday afternoon on my station and I assumed it was going to be the last broadcast since I’d read on Wikipedia that something would finally be replacing the block after 4 years of the same reruns (during which time I’d gone through a lot in my life, so it was kind of big to me). I remember they only showed the first four programs and those two specific episodes of Raven, without Zack and Cody or Hannah Montana. I left midway through the second Raven episode, since nothing about this airing seemed different. However, about a month later, I read that ABC really had aired for the last time and would never come back. This hit me hard since I’d watched the block since October 2003, and had lived almost half my life since then. I was curious about whether the Sunday airing had been the last broadcast or if there had been one more the following week (I couldn’t remember what day in August I saw the Sunday broadcast on). So it was a pretty depressing ending to a very long chapter of my life. Now, finally, I get to see for sure how the block really ended. Now, like I said, I didn’t watch the broadcast to the end (which cut off after the second Raven episode), but my station almost NEVER aired the closing bumper. (I remember at one point just a month or two before the final airing they randomly showed it, to my surprise as I don’t think I’d ever seen it). So between that and the fact that this station cut it off, I can say with pretty much 100% certainty that it wasn’t shown on my station either.

It really ended in 2007. I’m glad it did. That was around the time Disney programming got bad, and I was sort of outgrowing it anyways. It would have been nice though if they’d brought back the earlier seasons of the block.

I’m surprised this block lasted as long as it did because most of the shows here were A. Cancelled and B. Reruns of older programming with (from what I remember) no original programming and dropping viewership, so I’d imagine it wasn’t very profitable for Disney in the blocks later years. There’s something about the block that felt out of place in the early 2010s when this aired, with said older shows and the bumpers feeling very mid-late 2000s-ish. This felt like an end of an era for Disney television.

After 4 years of waiting for the block to get an overall, the Litton’s Weekend Adventure was such a big disappointment. Yeah, not a lot of kids programming at this point was good anyways (especially with Disney), but they could have started reacting the older ABC Kids seasons, that had shows like Proud Family, Filmore, Recess and Lizzie McGuire.

I remember the time when I'd get pissed off at a Club Penguin commercial when it came on, specifically the one at 44:41 (it was shown around three minutes into the video as well). I loved the game a lot, and my 9-year old logic was "The game shouldn't have commercials because then the game would go bankrupt!" so I remember spamming Club Penguin customer support to get them to stop airing the commercials, which backfired completely.

Man, One Saturday Morning really suffered quite the slow and painful death. While the rebranding started alright it kinda just went down hill with the show selection (repeats of the same couple episodes from stuff on Disney Channel). It got pretty rough near the bitter end, and I think that putting it down was probably for the best. I still think it had a decent run overall, and I think people will remember it fairly fondly.

I remember at my local ABC affiliate ABC 7 DC (WJLA) on Sundays instead of the sign off at the end of the video you showed, or the narrator said nothing at the end of the show/block, at the end of “That’s So Raven”, The narrator says “Hanna Montana is up next. Right here on ABC Kids” when in reality, what’s up next will be infomercials.

NBC did air NBC Kids from 2012 to 2016 (and on Telemundo until 2017) before getting the boot by Litton (now Hearst Entertainment) and their block called "The More You Know" referencing a PSA block from the 1990s which airs on Saturdays on NBC and Telemundo, and Sundays on Cozi TV (My local NBC station used to be ABC and hence, aired ABC Kids until 2005)

The Emperor's New School actually last aired on Disney Channel in June 2010. Also, ABC Kids never aired season 2 of both TENS and The Replacements.

Without you, I would have never been able to watch The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. You gave us a place where kids without cable could watch Disney Channel and Toon Disney/DisneyXD shows just for Saturday mornings. Honestly though every saturday morning i would wake up to watch the suite life of zack and cody and i became sad that day when the whole thing ended lol that used to be the stuff i watched since my family never had a lot of money back in the day the only way i knew who hannah montana was it was by abc kids lol when they took abc kids out i moved to qubo and the shows were kinda cool but now since im 18 i stick to hulu or netflix and maybe the cw for reruns of two and a half men

TBH, I think ABC Kids kinda deserved the shutdown. Frankly, it was airing the same shows over and over for several years straight.

After Saban Sold Fox Family & Power Rangers to Disney, 4Kids Made Their Block Called The FoxBox. ABC Got The Rights Then. Moving Power Rangers From Fox to ABC. After Saban Bought Power Rangers Back, It Left ABC Kids For Nickelodeon & Nicktoons. Now It's Moving to Netflix In 2022.
