In this 4th and final video, Jim Gibson describes and shows how to test and label. Remember there are three phases to a cabling job the first phase is "pre-cable" where you pull the cable through the walls through the ceilings. The second phase is "set finish" that's where you punch down the jacks and put on the faceplates. Set-finish is always done after painting. After set-finish is the last phase which is "identifying, testing and label". Hope you enjoy the videos please comment give us a thumbs up and subscribe.

What an awesome job this company does. I'm a student worker at a community college in the IT department. We run alot of wire through campus and it's a hodgepodge of cabling everywhere from various people throughout the years. These videos really show me alot on better and cleaner ways to do cabling. Thank you.

Did you create that? You sir are a genius, I wish I had this on my last job which was 100 cables toning Each one out was a headache. I do like to keep all my cables in order though. I’m also a big fan of the Keystone patch panels so much easier to work with.

Thanks for showing all this, as someone that wants to get into IT it is very helpful. You mentioned that learning how to program switches would be very helpful, what is the best way to go about doing that if I can't just go out and buy an expensive switch?

The one improvement to the LEDs might be to string 6 or 8 of them together rather than having them loose; it wouldn't change the job but it might save dropping one and losing it.

Great video few questions. 1.The tech we didnt see was plugging his fluke near the tablea to light up the patch panel correct?? 2. What and why was the tech plugging in that black cord after ports was lightning up? 3. Was this process identifying and certifying the cables?

I am so confused why is the led time saving ? if the cables were labeled and punched based on the label, then you would not need to trace each cable, for the customer dont they want the cables to go around an office or room sequentially. i hate when a 4 port plat has 46 74 13 and 33 dosent that look unprofessional?

Good question, as a licensed low-voltage cable contractor what I have found is installing Jacks in a clockwise direction works well only when you have under 10 jacks in a small office. However, when you're doing a major install of hundreds of jacks (or anything more than 10 jacks) putting each jack in some sort of order does not work well. However using a tool called "the cable identifier" can save you about 30% labor or more. I have found that the customer would rather have a savings on their final invoice rather than have some sort of order. This way of cabling makes it patch panel centric not Jack centric. Check out my other videos on how to design network cabling, especially for large installations.

Do you ever run in to young folks that think they know better and faster ways of doing things? I’ve ran in to people that insist they know better and then waste more time doing the task again the correct way after they screwed up. I think that is a flaw in the millennial generation. Nice job showing how this work is done. After the install is completed, this type of job is forgotten about.

I'm not sure if it is a millenial thing as much as it is a problem with the combination of RU-vid and the "Gig" economy with these freelance apps. Now everyone thinks that they can watch a few RU-vid "How to" videos and sign up on one of these apps and now they are magically an IT technician or Telecom tech because "Hey, I know how to connect my home PC". They jump right in to work independently without ever having done any actual hands on training under a real tech. All of it made worse by the bottom feeder middle man "staffing" companies, none of whom could begin to do a single drop themselves, who grab the big contracts, distribute it to multiple other middle man companies who also know nothing about working in the field who then post the job on these apps for $10-$30/hour. Then what do you get on a job for an assistant? Someone who is happy to work slow as hell because "hourly" who cares nothing about taking pride in their work, making the customer happy or doing any of it right. Or they have their ideas for how to do it faster which usually means just laying the cable on the ceiling tiles, code violations and they don't even know what "cable management" means. They like to pretend they have experience but you learn real quick that they have none beyond watching videos. Uber driver/college student/ cashier by day, wannabe technicians, cable pullers etc by night or vice versa. It's always the same kind of person too. Shows up late with an attitude in a compact car with no ladder and very few, if any, tools. They're either dressed in a sweater, khaki dress pants and office shoes or a t-shirt with some music group on it or other unprofessional logo with jeans or sweatpants and their crack showing every time they climb a ladder. Which is your ladder of course because they didn't bring one....to a cable pulling job. "Oh, I thought you would be providing the tools." If they do have any tools it is the cheapest combo set they could find on Amazon. We got sent one guy you wouldn't even believe. Insisted he had 10 years experience and was an adjunct professor of IT. He figured out how much cable was needed, pulled all of the cables out the full length of the run. Not through the drop ceiling, but onto the floor. He then put them in a bundle and wrapped them in velcro every 6 inches. That was when I checked on him to see how he was doing and about lost it. I asked him what his plan was. He thought that you laid the cables out to where you wanted them across the floor and then lifted them into the ceiling. Not sure how he planned to get through the grid. 0.o Asked him if he had any pull sticks. He says "You mean these things?" and pulls out those little 12 inch ones you get at Harbor Freight. So we pull the cables ourselves and ask him if he knows how to do male ends, he of course says yes and grabs his crimps. We let him start on one, he's got his back turned towards us, and 25 minutes later he still isn't done with the first one. So we go see what's up. He had peeled the outer coating back like you would a banana, had untwisted the pairs and stripped all of their coatings off down to copper. He then says it is taking him so long because he isn't sure how he is meant to tell the colors apart once he's stripped the coating. O.o There was another kid once who was pulling cable, hops off the ladder (ours of course) and starts digging through our tools. I ask what he thinks he is doing. He says he is looking for something to cut the cable with and grabs dykes. I tell him to just use his snips. His response was "My work order didn't list snips in the items required for the job so I don't have any." I told him that if he has to be informed to bring snips to a cable pulling job then he needs to never take another telecom job ever again and that it was time for him to leave and find a different part time gig.

So are you giving an as-built print to the customer with labels sort of jumping around then? I’m not disputing that yours is faster than toning - it’s wildly faster than toning or writing if what the customer receives on the print does not matter.

Yes, I am giving the customer a floorplan with all the jacks numbers identified. my system is "patch panel centric" rather than "Jack location centric". All my jacks are clearly labeled as to the port number on each patch panel. On large jobs I divide the cable up according to location. For example, all the first floor cables are kept on the same area of the patch panel. All the cables on the second floor are put on a different area on a patch panel. All the cables in the west wing are put on a separate patch panel. There is a considerable labor savings doing it this way using the cable identifier. Therefore it allows me the opportunity to keep my quotes to the customer as low as possible. I use "THE CABLE IDENTIFIER" sold on CabeSupply.com. The cable identifier will save you about 30% time and labor. The larger the job the more the savings. I use the savings to give my customer a lower proposal and therefore more likely to get the job.
@CableSupply

I am assuming that you're asking the question why don't we put it in sequential order in the room that were installing? It takes more time to do it that way, specially on large jobs. I pass on the savings in my proposals therefore, I get more jobs. When you do it in sequential order, the system will be up ended when the customer adds jack in the future. I have made some assumptions and I hope I have answered your question.

So confused why you would ever need these leds.
@Eric-qx1kx
@Eric-qx1kx Год назад
I don't believe they label their cables, they pull them, terminate, then use the LEDs essentially as a tone/probe. I assume they then label the faceplate and hopefully give the customer a print of what numbered drops are located where. I can definitely see some advantages here, its over all faster, makes dressing easier as you don't have to dig in the bundle to find a specific cable to punch down.... and you also save some $$$ on labels. The negatives I guess, it goes against BICSI and TIA's cabling label standards( so this likely would not fly for govt work or any project designed by an RCDD) and you end up with non sequential numbers at the faceplate, which isn't really a big deal as long as you have a print where you can locate a specific jack if needed.

Eric, Thank you for your positive words. You are correct we use the "Cable Identifier" to replace the tone and probe. Cat6 and above categories do not tone easily. This saves a lot of time! We label all our jacks (p-touch) and identify them on the floor plans. Every jack is identified and tested before we turn the project over to the customer. Never had a problem. In fact to the best of my knowledge we have never had a "goback" concerning or cabling projects. We have cabled a lot of government builds through out the years and have sold lots of "Cable Identifiers" to government IT technicians. As a commercial licensed low voltage cabling contractor with over 40 years of network cabling experience we are professional, competitive and PROFITABLE. Not all innovation comes from BICSI. I invented the cable identifier when we were doing a project with over 600 drops in a large office building in downtown LA. The bigger the install the bigger the labor savings and the more competitive you can be. It has saved us up to about 30% in labor cost!
