Commercial fishing is still a big part of Ucluelet's economy and culture. Last night when I went to shoot the sunset I ended up being distracted by the Viking Storm, a local fishing boat as it made it's way out of the harbour just before sunset. Recently I've been experimenting with slower transitions and lining up horizon lines so they're smoother. Here are the results. Shot with my DJI Mini3 Pro and Sony RX10... The Sony let me down a bit compared to some other cameras I could have brought but as the saying goes; "The best camera for a shot is the one you have with you" and more often than nt my RX10 is the camera I have with me.
Here are some random "facts" given to me by Chat GPT related to commercial fishing on Vancouver Island. I haven't validated them so take them with a grain of sea salt;
Diverse Fisheries: Vancouver Island supports a diverse range of fisheries, including salmon, halibut, herring, crab, prawns, and more. The island's location provides access to both Pacific Ocean and inland waterways, contributing to the variety of seafood caught.
Salmon Capital: Vancouver Island is often referred to as the "Salmon Capital of the World." The island's waters are abundant with different species of salmon, including chinook, coho, sockeye, and pink salmon. The annual salmon runs attract anglers and commercial fishers alike.
Traditional Indigenous Fisheries: Indigenous communities on Vancouver Island have a long history of sustainable fishing practices. They have relied on the abundance of seafood for cultural, social, and economic purposes. Many Indigenous nations continue to engage in commercial and subsistence fisheries today.
Economic Impact: Commercial fishing is a significant economic driver for Vancouver Island. It provides employment opportunities for local communities and contributes to the overall economy of the region. Fishing-related industries, such as processing and transportation, also play a crucial role.
Sustainable Practices: In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainable fishing practices to ensure the long-term health of the marine ecosystem. Many fishing operations on Vancouver Island are adopting measures to minimize bycatch, protect habitat, and adhere to fisheries management regulations.
Aquaculture Presence: Aquaculture, including salmon farming, is another important aspect of the seafood industry on Vancouver Island. Fish farms contribute to the supply of salmon and other seafood products, though they have also faced environmental and sustainability challenges that are actively being addressed.
Fishing Festivals: Vancouver Island hosts various fishing festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating the local seafood industry. These events often include competitions, demonstrations, and opportunities for the public to learn about the region's rich fishing heritage.
Challenges and Conservation: Overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change pose challenges to the sustainability of fisheries on Vancouver Island. Conservation efforts and fisheries management initiatives are in place to address these concerns and promote responsible fishing practices.
Wildlife Interactions: Vancouver Island's coastal waters are home to a diverse array of marine wildlife, including whales, seals, sea lions, and seabirds. Commercial fishers often coexist with these species, and efforts are made to minimize negative interactions and protect marine biodiversity.
Global Export: Vancouver Island's seafood products are not only consumed locally but also exported globally. The island's high-quality seafood, especially its salmon, is sought after in international markets, contributing to British Columbia's reputation as a major seafood exporter.
