The discussion kicks off with a nostalgic look at the evolution of HVAC controls, reminiscing about the confusion and challenges faced in the industry, particularly in the '90s. The speakers emphasize the importance of grasping the fundamentals before diving into the technical intricacies, making it an ideal resource for newcomers and seasoned professionals.
The video covers essential topics such as the transition from electro-mechanical and pneumatic systems to the digital age of DDC (Digital Direct Control). Kirk provides historical insights, highlighting the early challenges faced by the industry and the significant leap forward with the introduction of DDC in the 1914s.
Chris sheds light on the significance of DDC (Digital Direct Control) systems, explaining how they have revolutionized HVAC controls by utilizing digital signals and sophisticated programming. The speakers discuss the versatility of DDC controllers, emphasizing their blank slate nature, allowing for customized programming based on individual experiences and applications.
The video also touches on the role of commissioning in ensuring precise control and efficiency, debunking the myth of a "bad controller" while emphasizing the importance of well-crafted programs. The discussion extends to the evolving landscape of residential HVAC systems, predicting a future where sophisticated control systems become commonplace even in standard homes.
Whether you're a newcomer seeking a bird's eye view of commercial HVAC controls or an experienced professional looking for insights from industry veterans, this presentation provides a valuable resource. Join Tony, Kirk, and Chris as they navigate through the history, challenges, and advancements in HVAC controls, offering a rare opportunity to engage with true experts in the field.

Awesome convo. Just getting into the Stationary Engineer trade with highly critical systems. Hearing this conversation is getting me up to speed. I never thought I’d be this fascinated with building automation, but here I am. Thanks guys🙏🏽

Let’s teach how to tune pid loops, troubleshoot communication issues, or interfacing with said controller

I wonder if programming can be proactive with expected conditions such as lights turning off in indoor agriculture. We already know what to anticipate when the sensible load goes away at an instant. Maybe the controls can be programmed to be proactive and initiate dehumidification before the sensor detect the humidity spikes. Just a thought.

Yes we do this to prepare for the removal of sensible load. Sounds like you know this process well. Thanks for the comment.

Hi. I have studied HVAC for 2 years in college. worked a year in field. Now I want to get into Controls. How can I get a job in it? and where should I start?

I will answer your question. I have over 50 years in the HVAC trade and continue to work part-time in the industry. My last 17 years were concentrated in the controls side of HVAC with JCI. My suggestion is to find a local controls contractor or Johnson Controls office and ask for a job as a controls installer. As an installer you will learn controls pretty quickly while working with the install manager for your install team. From there you will find opportunities to move along to other aspects of HVAC Controls. Read every piece of literature associated with every control device you encounter. In addition, Johnson Controls can provide some good training.

Pretty good discussion although little weak on pneumatics discussion knowledge. The only thing I would add is… it doesn’t matter how good the controllers are and how perfect the programming is, if improper wiring techniques and installation/ termination practices are subpar the entire project is doomed for failure. The biggest failure in the controls industry is the lack of basic electrical knowledge, RF contamination, improper grounding techniques and wiring all around.

I strongly disagree!! I've been installing control systems for 20 years and my favorite thing to say is ..."check the programming" 😂😂😂 Me and a few of my guys in Seattle are ALWAYS re-engineering these horrible jobs from control companies 😂😂

I’m not listening to a 1 hour presentation. Understand the specific controller’s logic, application, the different components that provide the inputs/outputs, and as far as programming and configuration, that only comes with real world experience. These nerds over complicate the technical aspects, because they set at a desk and study mechanical engineering all day. Most field techs. aren’t plotting grains of moisture per lb of air when it’s a 90* day while the roof ranges from 110-135* radiating off a black rubber roof. These programmers are about to lose their job by A.I., these dude’s wouldn’t last a week as an hvac technician.

Yeah leave that job to engineers. I forget that HVAC techs like yourself install the equipment designed by engineers yet still talk down on engineers. I'm glad to have been on both sides. Now it makes sense to me why crybaby techs like you. think you're better than everyone else
