Our goal was to make this as accurate as possible. We didn't cut out any important information or have the mock DPE answer any questions.
This is a full length mock Commercial checkride done as close to the real thing as possible. No side tracks or teaching moments. We hope this gives you a good idea of the length and scope of your checkride.

The scenario proposed of the friend renting the aircraft and being the operator exercising operational control is actually okay to conduct. Here's some more information and where to find (some of) the regs covering this: You can provide your pilot services, whether holding out or not (you are allowed to hold out for your "pilot services" only), if you are not the operator and the operator is not being paid to transport the property or passengers you are flying onboard the aircraft. For this scenario, see 91.501(b)(4): "Flights conducted by the operator of an airplane for his personal transportation, or the transportation of his guests when no charge, assessment, or fee is made for the transportation". So long as the operator isn't being paid to have you fly these people, then you can legally perform the flight. There is another reg for this as well (dependent upon holding out or not, but if holding out for "pilot services" only, then you can conduct the flight), but this is one of them. However, the operator could've been paid without you the pilot knowing so that's another interesting twist. For property, see when it's allowed via 91.501(b)(7): "The carriage of property (other than mail) on an airplane operated by a person in the furtherance of a business or employment (other than transportation by air) when the carriage is within the scope of, and incidental to, that business or employment and no charge, assessment, or fee is made for the carriage other than those specified in paragraph (d) of this section;" For this, you can carry such property and be paid to do so, so long as the operator (person who hired you and would be providing the aircraft) is doing so in furtherance of his/her business or employment.

Thank you for clarifying. I was confused when I saw this I always thought you could fly for compensation as long as you are not providing the plane and the guest has operation control.

So great video and very educational. However you may want to review the discussion on Pilot Qualifications and the scenario with the “passenger” renting the aircraft and hiring you the commercial pilot to fly him to Chicago. In my opinion it would be perfectly legal for the pilot to be paid to take the passenger to Chicago. The passenger has operational control but he is not holding out to the public to take persons to Chicago. It’s no different than if the passenger actually owned the aircraft and hired you to fly him. No operational certificate is required for that situation as well as the lease which is a dry lease.

Thanks for taking the time to write this and for phrasing it in a positive way! If it is a mistake it wouldn't be our first! We appreciate community feedback making us all more knowledgeable and safe pilots. I just saw your comment now and we are going to take a look at it in depth and will plan to get an in depth response that brings clarity to all.

No flight school would allow that for insurance purposes. It's also called a sham dry lease... The flight school is holding out to the public by having their airplanes available for rent to people. The aircraft is being used to transfer a person or property from place to place for compensation. That's getting into common carriage rules. This would be a dry lease of which operational control was not transferred so thus either the flight school or the person renting the plane would need a part 135 certificate, or 121 if this was a scheduled thing. *edit just to add; investment companies that own transport large aircraft, do indeed rent (lease) out aircraft to airlines BUT operational control is legitimately transferred to the airline and the airline takes on operational control and operates under a part 121 cert. The airline provides the crew, fuel and MX for the aircraft. In your example, the flight school is renting out aircraft for compensation as a dry lease but is retaining operational control so thus not allowed normally.
@utah20gflyer76
@utah20gflyer76 4 месяца назад
The original poster is correct. Because the pilot does not have operational control or work for the FBO that dry leased the airplane it would be a legal for the pilot to be compensated for flying a person in that plane. Whether insurance is ok with that arrangement or not doesn’t affect the legality.
@PrestigeWorldWide777
@PrestigeWorldWide777 4 месяца назад
@@utah20gflyer76 I agree, the Lesee has operational control in a dry lease. So long as he/she is not holding out (inviting random people to fly and making them pay a portion of the flight costs).

Thanks for your involvement in this video everyone. Several helpful comments have been made regarding both the dry lease discussion and time of useful consciousness. I have pinned a detailed response from a viewer on the issue of the dry lease who I believe has a correct understanding. 14 CFR 91.500 (subpart F) series is specifically written for large and turbine-powered multiengine airplanes and Fractional Ownership programs, which typically does not include flight school and personally owned planes. Despite this, we have done some research and now agree that such an operation is legal as long as the renter and pilot are not the same person. The conclusion in our video is incorrect and will be updated. We apologize for any confusion and are encouraged to see people are still gaining knowledge and passing checkrides thanks to these videos.

1:05:38 Look up figure 17-1 in the 8083-25c... TUC is like 30 minutes or more at 20k feet. 30k feet is 1-2 minutes. it's above 40k feet is when you start to get down into the seconds of useful consciousness.
@SafetyPilotOfficial
@SafetyPilotOfficial 4 месяца назад
Thanks for sharing this. We were looking for a basic understanding from the applicant as TUC depends heavily on many factors such as age, health, exercise, alcohol and smoking habits, as well as ascent rate. While a typical ascent rate may allow for upwards of 20 minutes without oxygen at 20,000ft a rapid decompression at 20,000ft certainly would not. Had the applicant thought he had as much as an hour there would be a problem. The point we were looking for is a pilot's understanding of the hazard of the situation and that they need to get down as soon as possible. Thanks for sharing the table.

You may want to review engine roughness. The electric fuel pump is not only for starting. Floor to door would tell you fuel selector (both), fuel shutoff (off--in), mixture full rich, ill leave out throttle setting because you arent restarting the engine, and electric fuel pump on. You could have lost your mechanical engine driven pump and gravity could not properly get fuel to the distribution block. It could also be that you have the fuel too rich for the alt you are at, or climbing out getting detonation because the engine is too hot, so you have to lower the nose to get cooling.

I like this video because it better prepares me for my CFI mock exam. You know, the one where they wreck you for two or more hours straight just to tell you you're not ready and to come back to do it all over again in 3 weeks after you've forgotten all the information on the mock exam to finally sign me off to take my check ride with a DPE. So wish me luck, I have me 97th mock exam coming up in a few days 😂

@Tony-xj8lp
@Tony-xj8lp 4 месяца назад
5:30 I believe he is wrong about the Dry Lease. He is describing it as if he were a flight instructor being hired to fly an aircraft from his flight school. With a Dry Lease, the renter is allowed to find their own flight crew. 14 CFR Part 91 Subpart K & AC 91-84 - Fractional Ownership Programs A dry-lease aircraft exchange means an arrangement, documented by the written program agreements, under which the program aircraft are available, on an as needed basis without crew, to each fractional owner.

I think you may be right
@ChrisJones-sd5pj
@ChrisJones-sd5pj 4 месяца назад
I also think he is wrong on that one. The person renting has operational control, but he is not making money on the flight. He is just renting it and paying you to fly it. You are just being hired to fly. Now if said renter was selling a seat to another passenger, that would be a no go as he would be leaning towards part 135
