On a gusty winter day, I took the Mooney M20J up to Morristown to practice the steep spiral into a power off 180º accuracy landing as I had done on my Commercial checkride. This video is a compilation of videos I had from 3 times. The first one was good but I overshot the spot. The second was in the box but forced on. The third, I did it straight from the pattern without the spiral and it was perfect in the box at low energy. Practice makes perfect.
It was particularly challenging to do these on a day with strong gusty crosswinds. Normally I had practiced or demonstrated these on normal condition days so this was a first performing them under such conditions. Then again, the one day you could end up needing the skills may not be the day with the best conditions.

Appears to be a well executed engine out spot landing simulation. It was kind of interesting, though, how I was pretty convinced you were too low and wide on the turn to base for an actual engine out situation - I would have had it in much tighter at that point - or at least had it in a 45 to the numbers from there but it turned out fine for you.

It's different practicing a "simulated emergency" vs a "commercial checkride maneuver." I sure as heck wouldn't stay far from the airport in a real emergency nor in a simulation of one. But, for the commercial checkride they want you to demonstrate this so there you go.

Cheyenne III in the background at the end. Could you note the tail number next time if it's still there? Probably would be hangared though.

It's been there outside all winter. According to flightaware it looks like it gets flown a lot.

Nice job Mike. Always challenging doing those. Any plans for the plane or trips coming up?

Replacing the windows this year and probably paint job. If I can make it out to Oshkosh or Mooney Summit this year will be an achievement. Don't think I can get out long or far for a while right now.

@@Mooney201er Sounds great. That will be a big upgrade for the plane. She’s a nice ship. I live in central IL and hope to get to Osh as well. Hope to see/meet you there but totally understandable if you can’t get out.

Looking good Mike! I need to get out and do some of these as well.

Careful you don't shock cool or blow your turbo though!

@@Mooney201er I don't subscribe to the shock cooling idea, but thanks. I did my Commercial training and check ride in the 252 and it didn't have any adverse effects on the engine or turbo.
