On a gusty winter day, I took the Mooney M20J up to Morristown to practice the steep spiral into a power off 180º accuracy landing as I had done on my Commercial checkride. This video is a compilation of videos I had from 3 times. The first one was good but I overshot the spot. The second was in the box but forced on. The third, I did it straight from the pattern without the spiral and it was perfect in the box at low energy. Practice makes perfect.
It was particularly challenging to do these on a day with strong gusty crosswinds. Normally I had practiced or demonstrated these on normal condition days so this was a first performing them under such conditions. Then again, the one day you could end up needing the skills may not be the day with the best conditions.
