The Commodore 64 Compilation Comparison is my series in which I review game compilations that were released for the Commodore 64.
In this video I'm reviewing Mind Benders, a compilation of 4 games released by Domark and Commodore in 1990. The games included are:
Trivial Pursuit
Split Personalities
Snare
Confuzion

Great compilation review! Interesting reading the other comments here too! I remember playing Trivial Pursuit with a friend on their CPC 6128 back in the day. The log fire in the background blew my mind, but the questions went way over my head. I have very little patience for games that require thinking. I would probably have liked Split Personalities most of all. I can definitely see that as a pack in for a new C64 owner along with the nightmoves pack, you would have been set up well for the Christmas break with that.

It's definitely a collection for those that like to test their brain power, hence the name I suppose 😉

I have it on disk. Came with my 1541. Confuzion is one of my favourite games on the C64. A score of 6 was a tad unfair, but each to their own I suppose.

I just found it way too hard to be much fun, but maybe it gets easier if you stick with it.

If I had bought a Commodore 64 with this complation and Night Moves together, I wouldn't have complained one bit. Trivial Pursuit is a solid conversion of the board game, and definitely a great multiplayer experience. Split Personalities can get a little dull, but it's not bad. Snare is the stand out for me, it's difficult but patience reaps the rewards and once you get used to the orientation changes, it's definitely a good experience. The end sequence to that is somewhat iconic, well worth checking out if you have time. Confuzion is an excellent puzzle game, and I think I'd be giving it around 7.5 or 8, it's addictive once you get into it - and the original release has the tune on the B-side which Rob Hubbard did a C64 version of.

I agree that Snare is the best game on this collection for me, It's one I could probably get into if I played it a little more and the second set of levels had actually laoded 😂

I bought that C64 computer compilation in 1990 as my Bread Bin 64 stopped working. Funny that I still have my C64 Bread Bin, but my C64c was given away about 6 years later by my mum. The Bread Bin is working again now, and in 1990 I only bought the C64 because I loved it so much and I used it more than my Amiga at the time.

Great that the older system started working again. Any idea why it came back to life?

I have this on tape and disk, along with Night Moves. Big fan of Split Personalities, and I enjoyed doing an interview with the people behind it for Retro Gamer. Snare I liked too, although I get why it is tricky. Confuzion was impressive for the time, based on an old arcade game. It aged badly though. Trivial Pursuit is great fun - for me, the cleverest thing was the add-on tapes of extra questions (much like the extra cards for the board game itself) which worked on all 8-bit formats. TP was a clever way of interacting with the game. I'd be rating them 7s and 8s, and well above 7/10 personally overall.

Perhaps I was a little harsh on some of these games, and I would have rated Trivial Pursuit and possibly Snare higher at the time. The other two are a little too frustrating for my liking.

Thinking back as a kid, getting this compilation would have instantly hit the bottom drawer. Triv wouldnt really be top family entertainment today, with outdated questions, but back then it was easy to find a board game on the flea market (remember those?), and probably have a full round by the time the CBM tape version had loaded. Split personalities is a good game, and I enjoyed it, but sadly the game never gives enough time to be abe to get very far, and see all the pictures, and quite a rip-off of spitting image; in fact the working title of the game was splitting images. Snare looks like a magazine cover tape release, which doesnt live up to the charm of a 4-way bounder clone. Confusion is a game I can't stand. So I'd give this 4 out of 10. Arcade Hall of Fame was definitely a better pack, as I played Blue Max, Up and Down and Aztec Challenge a lot back then. The fact they gave these games away for free in a pack shows they couldn't sell them for a price otherwise. Just like the Screen Gems Back To The Future 2 on the Amiga - with Nightbreed and some other scrap.

Wow, this is a very different rating of the collection compared to most of the commenters here! I agree with some of your points though and probably sit somewhere in between your thoughts and those of most of the others.

@@witchfinder1976 - One man's gold is another man's turkey; what can I say? Arcade Hall of Fame is 100% better than this freebie. I'm fairly sure I had Monopoly, Cluedo and Scrabble, and probably the normal Trivial Pursuit, but none of those are exciting and didn't get beyond the One More Try barrier.

As a kid I would have definitely wanted the Night Moves games and probably left these well alone - but I actually quite enjoy Split Personalities now. I've not tried Confuzion or Snare before, will check those out but I'm not sure Trivial Pursuit is worth it these days given the age of the questions.

I imagine very few kids would have been interested in these games at the time, it definitely seems like a pack aimed more at the grown ups. Of course those kids are now grown ups themselves now!
