Part 2 of my Commodore PC-1 series where I will be replacing the Power Supply with a new embedded switch mode power supply unit.
I'll also be playing some games and checking out both the monochrome Hercules and the CGA mode on the computer.
You can find part 1 here where I am introducing the Commodore PC-1 and using a temporary power setup to start it up : • Commodore PC 1 Part 1/...
** Attention ** : This video talks about replacing an AC/DC power supply in a computer. This is not something you want to mess with without knowing what you are doing. I'm not going to show you how to repair / debug such a PSU as I consider this to be very dangerous and do not recommend inexperienced people probing around such power supplies.
I do want to link to an excellent video about discharging capacitors called "How to Safely Discharge a Capacitor" from DigiKey : • How to Safely Discharg...

You have to exchange the ROE (golden) capacitors. Especially the 2200 range etc. (not the 400v ones usually). All caps manufactured in this golden crap, or trademarks of Frako and ROE as well as made in W. GERMANY ones are often broken in a2000 PSUs, too. Source: Just my experience.

Not a biggie, but you can totally get rid of the shielding. All it does is hold heat into the board and chips. It was originally included to reduce RF interference to be compliant with FCC rules. Remove and be happy.

I see Knipex, I see Jokari... That's some nice, quality tools!

I like the Jokari, and the Knipex was an investment as I had to do a lot of crimping a while back .... both are nice tools, however still in the hands of an amateur / hobbyist :)

I would replace the rubber grommet on the DC power wires coming from the metal PSU case.

My friend used to have one of these and we spent many afternoons playing games on it when we were kids. To run a lot of CGA games we had to run a small TSR program and then the CGA games would run fine. I don't remember the name of it but it was part of the disks you got with the machine. Also I would recommend hooking up a PC speaker as this machine has a very unique POST beep and key press sound. I remember that in-game sounds were never shrill, but rather warm instead.

Thx a lot ... enjoy making them... also helps me remember stuff :) on a couple of occasions I had to rewatch them when I ran into an issue :) also wanted to have some kind of little legacy for this strange hobby to look back on later :)

I hate myself for whining about it, but did you seriously just cut the the wires to the mains passthrough and just leave it disconnected? That's shoddy.

Loving these videos. Really inspired me to get back into this hobby. You make things look quite easy to repair, and the steps you take are just common sense and quite easy to follow.

You can also make yourself a completely new power supply, consisting of classical (no switch mode) units, with transformers/recifiers (+ and - voltages) etc, when you know the voltages needed to make it work. I did that in the past and it worked properly.

I wish surplus applicators weren't so expensive since it's not too hard to build a press to operate one; they seem to hold their value extremely well, even ones which are decades old!

I wonder if the fuse was blown on the PSU? Also piece of advice, don’t take the mains wires onto the connectors you really want to push them through the holes in the tab to make a good physical connection as the last thing you want is a broken wire and a live wire swinging around
@RetroSpector78

Don't just tack the wires to the connections, you must provide mechanical support also, plus, you should update the wiring to modern approach for order of connections.

just food for thought, almost all connector suppliers will sell pre crimped wires in various lengths for a buck or two (JST included) just check with your local internet supplier if you do not want to fiddle with crimpers or don't have them

@RetroMarkyRM

@Mr Guru Thanks for that. I tried 4x 41464's but got a RAM timing error. Need to check the schematics I guess. Maybe there are jumpers / it's picky about RAM timings?

Hehe, cool, using your second floppy drive as a hard disk! I hope that's a 750! (But having them vertical like that makes me cringe even though those are less sensitive than hard disk drives, and I think they look better horizontal too. Oh, I see that you read my mind later in the video!)
@RetroSpector78
@RetroSpector78 5 лет назад
Iomega zip drive casing allows for it to be placed vertically so I assume there are no issues running it like that. I guess some pc cases also allow hard drives / floppy drives to be mounted like that.

personally i would've used a switch with 2 internal switches so you can turn the Live and Neutral wire off at the same time instead of leaving the neutral wire connected. for added safety

LOL, just because something runs on AC doesn't mean it's automatically high-voltage. "AC" doesn't stand for "high voltage." What makes that a high-voltage source is that it plugs into mains or an equivalent.

It's not about time, it's about reliability. You would literally have to replace ALL the components on the PSU to make it brand new. This is much easier.
@MrHBSoftware
@MrHBSoftware 3 года назад
@@VenomStryker so a psu design that lasted 30 years is less reliable than a modern wuhan coronavirus compliant PSU? gotta be dreaming....the old psu may not be as efficient but sure looks simple to troubleshoot and maintain...semiconductors dont degrade due to age, they are either good or bad. fixing the old psu and then recapping and it would last another 30 years
