Journaling just kept me in a neverending cycle of wallowing in my own depression and anxiety. You're absolutely right that it makes a person the center of their own universe, which we need far less of in this social media age.

What Natcha mentions is that it is worth the try but not something people need to feel they “should” be doing bc it varies from person to person. It did work for me, it helped me with my insomnia and managing strong, difficult emotions. I have been journaling for about six years now, but I don’t do it daily, just like once a week or whenever I am experiencing strong emotions. Just wanted to mention this in case ppl who never tried journaling get scared

I'm really, really happy you've found a sense of calm Maxine. I don't want to discourage or push people too firmly about *how* to behave but I do think that it's super valuable to consciously study how the things we regularly do actually make us feel and your example is a perfect one. I had a similar experience with TikTok, I would just endlessly doom scroll but it wasn't the content itself that affected me, a lot of that was like growing artists and musicians or comedians and memes - stuff that was educational, inspiring, or just funny and entertaining - it was the fact that I was sitting there k n o w i n g I had things that needed to be done but I just couldn't get off the dang app and do them, I already struggle enough as it is with executive dysfunction and adhd paralysis and TikTok just made it so much worse and t h a t is what made me hate myself. If I want content like that I'll go through yt shorts but I tend not to scroll through them and just look at the ones in my feed so it's easier to turn off 😊

It sucks that you risk demonetization by talking about a topic that affects half of the population. I'm almost 30 years old and I only just recently learned within the last couple of years, the best way to clean my vagina. What you said is exactly what I follow. And that type of information is wonderful especially for young girls because that's something I don't remember learning in sex ed. This was an awesome video Natacha! Can't wait for more 😁
@abigailelizabeth4655
@abigailelizabeth4655 Год назад
Yes exactly!!! Like how messed up is it that our society is so misogynistic and patriarchal that women get PUNISHED for educating other women in feminine health issues that effect all of us. I know I didn’t learn these things in sex Ed. The worst part is this doesn’t even have anything to do with sex it’s literally no different than saying “it’s not good for your hair to shampoo everyday” yet it’s treated differently bc women are so sexualized that even talking about how to clean ourselves is considered “X-rated” it’s so gross and I have lost a lot of respect for RU-vid bc of that.

Oh my gosh on the 10,000 steps one and tracking: I got a free fitbit a few years ago and it almost immediately turned me into a monster. I'd force myself to reach a certain number of active minutes, steps (and i went for 20,000, it was taking over my entire life), even stair levels. If you tend to have obsessive thoughts and habits, I feel like health tracking is one of the most mentally damaging things you can do. It's been like two years since i took the fitbit off for good, and i still am trying to overcome the anxiety that comes with not "getting my steps in". Thanks for throwing in the graphs about #of steps and risk, that helps a lot!

Comment regarding journaling. Personally I had journaled throughout my entire life and it definitely matters WHAT one journals about. I had stages where I was angry journaling and I found that detrimental to my mental health. It put me in a perpetual victim mentality and like you, Natacha, I was losing perspective on a larger picture. After doing the science of happiness course curated online by Stanford university, I discovered the gratitude journaling. That did the opposite, it put me in a very positive mindset. These days I find the most effective way to journal for me is a combination of problem solving (aka writing out my problems and finding solutions to them by asking constructive and objective questions) and expressing gratitude. I can still be angry/sad/anxious yet I can write down some solutions to these feelings and appreciate what I already have going for me.

Sending you love and thank you for that! 🤍

I have learned the same, this is so important. Focusing on too much negative journaling can be so harmful (or at least not as beneficial). I use the Day One app and it has an "On this day" feature showing what happened a year ago on a given day which I absolutely love. It's amazing to see my growth! 🥰 It not only improves my physical and mental health, but also career and relationships indirectly. Wether it's free flow of writing or guided questions it can definitely improve how I talk to people, how to express my needs in a better way (personal and work) etc. Health has many deeper layers. Not sure how studies can actually measure this. 🤔😀

journaling is what got me out of my depression, because it helped me write down all my bad thoughts, then look at them, and realize by reading them out lout that some of my fears/insecurities were insane and didn't match reality reading through my journal also helped me notice my own patterns and certain recurring fears/behaviors so that i could track my progress and have a better understanding of myself it's not for everyone but i would definitely recommend it

@@harrie4667 ❤️ it’s rewarding when we find these tools that help us out of a bad spot. I didn’t have this immediate effect like you where I could gain perspective right away after journaling but I keep my notebooks and I came to a similar realization when looking at my teenage journals. Only now I realize how depressed I was at that stage but I was not able to recognize it in the moment. It is even hard to read. I’ve been off Facebook for over 2 years, and of TikTok for 6 months. I told myself it would be a 2 week break from Facebook, and when I tried to go back on the habit was broken and it just felt like a waste time. It has helped my mental health so much. And fun story, my therapist gave me the final push to delete TikTok, I started watching shows that I loved but hadn’t watched in awhile because I was always in a TikTok spiral. I rewatched crazy ex girlfriend. It reminded me of my love for theater/musicals, so I signed up for a musical theater dance class, and now I’m auditioning for a musical on Friday! I haven’t been in a show in 10+ years. Getting off social media opened up time for things I really love, and reinvigorated my love for things like theater and reading. It also helped me get back into a workout routine, and instead of being stuck scrolling I go do my workout.

I track my steps religiously every day, with the only rule being that I must get at least 5,000 steps 6 out of every 7 days. In a typical week I walk about 5,000 two days, 10,000 two days, and 15,000+ two or three days, with a complete veg-day once every two or three weeks. I would never make myself do 10,000 steps every day, day in and day out, like clockwork. My body doesn't want it and it would take the pleasure out of walking. I will say one thing, in addition to easy movement, I have found walking to be meditative and great for my state of mind. I don't know if it works for larger mental health issues but it's definitely worth a try.

Hey, because of the journaling topic, I LOVED the book „5 people you will meet in heaven“, it is not even Christian although the title is heaven. It was such a mind opening thing for me, showing me the bigger picture in life. A really good short read. Definitely a recommendation! The worst self help advice or habit I had was; excessively watching self improvement stuff and being so overwhelmed that I procrastinated all the time. Didn’t even started learning or doing sport or something else. All the time someone would just pop up in my feed and tell me THE ULTIMATE solution to this and that. My cure for all the things these self help dudes and girls tried to overcome (procrastination, motivation problems, wasting time, …) was to quit all of it and just chill. Do the work I have to do, even if I’m doing it totally wrong according to the newest studies (that are going to be debunked) I am still doing something.

I started journaling more for necessity than for any other reason. I journal when im feeling too anxious and need to get in touch with the root of my emotions. I sometimes need to be the centre of my universe because I tend to loose touch with my true feelings and just hide them under the rug. I would never try and schedule my journaling like many recommend on social media, like journaling every morning for 15 minutes or something like that. The spontaneous act of journaling whenever I feel the need to really prevents me from getting down and losing perspective, because I write in moments of despair and anger. But this is just what worked for me, i encourage anyone to at least try it out because the practice of observing and describing emotions is truly a tool that has helped me in more ways than one.

Omg I feel the same way about journaling! My biggest issue is with anxiety and overthinking, so journaling just makes me feel like I'm focusing so much on myself and not the bigger picture. I prefer to talk my anxieties out with my loved ones, or workout/do yoga (to help get me back in my body and out of my head) - which help my mental health much more than journaling ever has. Spot on video again Natacha xx

Could it help if the journaling is focused on something you observed instead of something that happened to you? For example, writing about the cute couple at the park that was exchanging gifts instead of "I took a walk at the park and this is what I was thinking about"?

I have a hard time focusing on the good things sometimes, so journaling gives me an outlet to focus on small wins or good things that happened throughout the day. It also lets me work through harder issues that maybe I'm having within myself (like getting to the root of anxiety) or process how I could handle an argument with my partner better! It definitely doesn't work for everyone but I personally love it! I also appreciate the tip about water. I drink usually around 2L of water and for me that's perfect! I'll drink a little more on some days obviously, but I cannot imagine drinking much more than that.

Love your balanced look at these things. I'd like to put out there that spironolactone was initially developed to help lower blood pressure in heart attack victims. It just had a bonus side-effect of reducing hormonal acne in women (I believe it lowers testosterone levels). Just be aware of that if you decide you want to take it. It's prescription based, anyway, so you'll have to discuss with a doctor. I used it for a while and it definitely did clear up my acne. However, I'm someone who has naturally low blood pressure as it is, and after a few months of use, I went off of it because I found it was making my blood pressure dip way too low. Chronic low blood pressure can have serious health implications. I didn't want to risk organ failure just for clear skin on my face. I'm sure it's perfectly safe for people whose blood pressure is usually in normal ranges, though.

My therapist recommended journaling but we're not focusing on putting me at the centre of my universe, we're focusing on me living a life aligned with my values and, as a religious person, putting myself at the centre of my universe instead of God or others is actually against my values. I have started using journaling to think about what my values are, think about where I'm at in terms of living in alignment with those values, creating small goals to add into my routine every week and then reflecting on how I'm going with those goals, if I think they are working, and if those small goals are actually achieving the ultimate goal of achieving my value. So it's very outcome oriented, it's not just me navel gazing and writing about my feelings.

Personally, I would recommend steering clear of the lemon water. Drinking too much acidic things, such as sour beers which have become very popular lately, can damage the enamel on your teeth and make them more sensitive. Just speaking from personal experience though. I would be very curious on your take on turmeric and cider vinegar. Love the science based content!

Another thing about multivitamins - iron and calcium block each other’s absorption, yet companies will put them together in a tablet - I am prescribed iron and calcium separately and that’s how I found out to take them at different times from one another. And other vitamins are fat soluble so need to be taken will a meal to be absorbed while others are not - but they’re all just lumped together in a multivitamin without much or any thought about how they interact with each other 💙 thanks for this video 😊

Great video Natasha! So good to have someone online presenting the science behind things to the wider public! On lemon water - I feel like this might be something for people to avoid doing, particularly every day. I've seen things saying that over time, having that amount of citric acid will erode enamel and have negative effects on dental health. Haven't looked for any papers on this yet but if people are doing it for vitamin C there are other ways! Or drink through a straw I guess 😊

That makes me so angry that RU-vid will demonetize you for talking about women’s health issues that don’t even have anything to do with sex. Like these things need to be talked about so young women who don’t receive proper education at home or school know not to do things like douche and also how to properly take care of themselves and their vaginal health/hygiene. It sucks we live in such a misogynistic society that huge companies like RU-vid are basically discouraging women from speaking about and educating other women on feminine hygiene issues. It’s so gross and ugly. Thank you for making this video and still sharing on those topics despite being shamed for it basically. I love you video and content and think you seem like such a positive, happy, and kind person❤
@natachaoceane
@natachaoceane Год назад
hey beautiful! yeah it makes me angry too honestly: I think I need to have another conversation with Google about it because I know so many creators who curse constantly (which I personally don't mind at all and I swear myself too) and then have ads literally within seconds but certain words like v* can demonetise the entire video for me and has done multiple times in the past. When I challenged Google on it, I tried to explain that's the proper medical term and I was assured that any form of cursing or language not appropriate for all audiences is treated the same but I've since done my research and that's 100% not true so I'm better equipped for the dialogue now! Your support really means a lot and in either case I won't stop doing what I want to do, if anything it fuels me to do it more and want to start a fight so I gotta calm down a little 😅 I totally agree with you about not everyone having access to the information, that's exactly why I think we have a responsibility to actually do something.
