Tim Graves, PGA, on the three common shank factors in a golf swing and how to fix the root cause of a hosel rocket
Graves Golf Single Plane Academy is the worldwide authority on the Single Plane Golf Swing of Moe Norman-similar to the Bryson DeChambeau golf swing. You solved my shoulder problem Tim, and now I will stay in that grooved swing. Positive thinking also stops the thought of negative, "wheels coming off again" thinking. The correct swing plane, especially on the wedge clubs, which are shanked the most, is very critical to avoid the hosel rockets!

Thank you very much Tim.I sometimes hit shanks with a wedge after hitting good shots.I have to pause and figure it out and self consciously feel like I'm about to hit another shank.You have explained it very well.Todd and yourself give great golf knowledge .Thanks again

Best video BY FAR I have seen on this subject. Thank you! I have been working on keeping my elbows closer together and getting my right elbow more in front of my body and all of a sudden I can't stop shanking the ball. So this gives me something to work on. Much appreciated.

I've seen a lot of videos on the shanks this is truly the best video I've ever seen. Totally helped fix my shanks that I've been struggling with for years. thank you so much

I had them for about 3 weeks! Every iron shot I hit was a hosel rocket. It happened right in the middle of me playing the best I ever had. The bad part was when I got back out on the course after thinking I had it fixed… it would creep up in my mind and I would do it again. I literally quit playing for 6 months. When I went back to playing I didn’t have the shanks anymore. 🤷‍♂️

I'm going through this exact problem right now (2 months on and off). I'm a 6 HP and generally shoot 75-82. I can go 2-3 rounds without shanking, and then when I least expect a shank, it happens. I have tried every strategy available on RU-vid and seemingly fix it before it sneaks into my game again. I'ts so Fu..ing frustrating. A few instructors have told me only a good player will shank a ball. Although, that helps my ego, it does absolutely nothing for my present situation. Glad you've resolved your issues, still working on mine!!

I hadn't shanked for years, then last week from nowhere, boom - almost every ball from 4 buckets (i was fuming and kept buying more buckets). The one fix I saw that worked instantly, stand up higher, this moves your weight back.

@@rubelukeable I’ve been shanking off and on for 8 years. Not sure how much longer I can play this game tbh. I’ve tried so many different swings but it always comes back.
@rubelukeable

@@SEANBERRY56 after 3 months of scoring 74-80 when I don’t shank and 85-90 when I do, I think I’ve finally figured out how to correct it when I do. Hasn’t happened in 5 months out on the golf course, but just at the range when I’m working on my swing. Crazy though. Good luck this summer. My issue stems from early extension and not rotating my left hip backwards on the through swing. Took a lot of videos and that seemed to be the cause.

Thanks Tim for the best explanation of what causes shanks and how to correct it thanks.

Thanks for explaining so precisely the causes of the shank. The shank has crept into my game over the last month or so to the extend that I have Seriously considered taking up a less frustrating game like bowls or ping pong and at 78 years old haven't much time left. Thanks so much...

Keeping the trail shoulder back is the key for me. I didn’t realize I was pushing it forward closer to the ball. I just went in the backyard & hit chips into my net and it felt completely different. Confidence building! Thanks!

If I don't make a full shoulder turn...my right shoulder will take over and I will shank it. If I get my right shoulder back far enough I don't have time to lunge at the ball.

This is me. Exactly. Dropping the right shoulder, instantly helped my contact and and I've taken my arms out of the equation. Thanks!!

This was great advice and I wait to try it out. I’m a 9 handicap and used to be even better. I continually get shanks JUST around the greens when I’m chipping. I follow all three of these shank factors and I think #2 might be the worst reason without me evening knowing. Thanks for the advice!

Happens to me several times a year. One thing I noticed when I move the ball farther away I tend to shift my weight to my toes trying to reach it. The shoulder under is a great fix, but be careful with your weight when you move the ball away. Unless I get my weight centered I still shank no matter how far away the ball is

Yes I agree. I’ve been getting them bad this year almost every other week now one week hitting great then the next shanking. Very frustrating

Here in england some club pros won!t even help you with it, it is so scary. Yet Ben Hogans clubs all were worn near the hosel.Keep up the good work.

You missed one cause. Address ball with weight on the feet heels. It should be 50/50 heels and toes. If you address with weight on the heels as you come down in the swing it moves more on to toes to 50/50 heel/toe and this can move the the club head out 1 or 2 inches causing the shank. It's very easy for weight distribution in set up to drift over time.

Trail elbow in front of hip. That just opened the door for me in chipping, pitching and full swing. Position 3 is all about trail elbow in front of hip. Time to hit the range.

Happens too often. What is the best drill? Thought hips should lead the way? How far should we be from ball? No explanation on that. I have had major issue here for 6 months and cannot shake it
@krispybowgod9656

Standing too close can cause shanks. Standing too far can cause shanks (causes a tendency to lean forward and get your weight on your toes)
@rangepro

Don't you think or would you consider that people are told to pull the handle at the ball , when you should be thinking about squaring up the club head? Cause you pull ball goes right "late" on delivering it!

I've never ever seen anyone stand that far away from the ball....
@snakesvt

Yep we stand farther away. That’s why our clubs have to have the lie flatten. We are 35-36in away with a driver

I have hit thousands of golf balls over the years like most watching. Shanked maybe three balls my entire life. I've popped them up, thinned, chunked but rarely a shank. This is not a common miss by any means.
