This video is all about common design mistakes I see made in the dining room and how to fix them. While the kitchen is the heart of the home, the dining room is that fun gathering space where
conversations can last for hours over a hearty meal and endless wine. It’s the place where you convene with your family after a long day to dish and catch up. Memories are made here and family time cherished.
Even though it’s the dining space, that doesn’t mean you can’t inject your style and personality into the room. The color choices you make, the patterns you love, the finishes you gravitate towards, the shape and style of the furnishings are all opportunities to get creative with the design. Avoid making these common dining room design mistakes to enjoy it for years to come.

After watching this video, now I know why I am dissatisfied with the black dining room chairs that came with my dining room table. I have a round table that seats four. My dining area is square. The table top is gray and black, and I am envisioning four white dining chairs. Everytime I go on a furniture store and look at the arrangements, I think about what you would think! ❤

I like the office chairs that have been repurposed ! Comfy and beautiful. I dont understand however how white chair can remain white, hands prints will appear on the most touched areas and the chairs will look old and dirty. And when you add sauce stains and wine stains, it is a nightmare to keep looking gorgeous, unless you have tons of money to replace them!

Poly acrylic/ synthetic fibers are simple to clean and faux leathers can be wiped down if sourcing white. Also removable covers that can be thrown in the wash works too! Thank you for watching Chapman 🙏🏻☺️

We bought a complete dining set over 15 years ago (table, chairs, buffet and china cabinet). I really don't love it anymore but my husband doesn't want to part with it. There's also the replacement cost factor. The set is a dark cherry color and classical in design and the chairs have a cushioned seat which I reupholstered in a black and white printed fabric. My walls are grey with white trim. I've toyed with idea of painting the chairs to break up the matchy matchy look. Thoughts?

Once you paint the set, it’s definitely more difficult to sell Cheryl. Luxury home consignment stores would be my advice. You’ll get top dollar and it beats having to sit around waiting for the right buyer. Life is too short to be surrounded by things you don’t LOVE 👍🏻☺️

I love my all matchy matchy dinette set, I also bought an all leather tailored living room set that is matchy matchy, a couch, chair, and love seat set, everything else takes away from the matchy matchy, I have many different styles of furniture, old and new, different wood and metal tones, and all the rest of the decor is eclectic, it all works. I guess I don't agree with 100 percent of the trends. My girlfriend has a dinette set that has nothing that is the same, I don't care for the style, she loves mine and wishes she had got a matchy matchy set, so I guess it is a matter of taste.

I made a big mistake buying a 48" round amish table with matching chairs to go into my modern space. It just looks way too simple and rustic and I don't know how to dress it up. I spent a ton of money on it, so no changing it :(

You can always break the set up and use the chairs in separate rooms Anna. The table can stay be paired with new slipcovered or upholstered linen chairs. That will allow the table to really stand out

We have a dining table that is not my favorite but my mom also won't part with. As a solution, we are going to upholster the dining chairs to a softer on the eye and current color. However, I can't do much about the table would you have any suggestions? Are table cloths still in style?

Julie, I noticed none of the dining tables had a tablecloth. Are tablecloths out of style? Trying to style my dining area in black and white. I have a round glass top/maple base table that I absolutely hate!! Thinking of painting the base but that glass top makes me want to scream, it’s so hard to keep clean!!!

Must all dining tables have a light above? I have a rectangular dining table in my rectangular dining room, which is open to my kitchen and kitchen island with seating. I plan to have the table up against the wall for daily use, and pull it to the center of the room when hosting. Since I'll be moving it around, I am not sure what to do with the lighting. I already have recessed lights in the ceiling, just not sure what and how to layer. Any suggestions?

Most of your advice is good. There is one thing, however, which is possibly bad advice. "Matchie Matchie" is correct for a traditional room. If you don't believe me, look at the Banquet Hall pictures of Buckingham Palace. Table and chairs match. The formal dining rooms in all the great country houses match. The design mistake with furniture in the dining room is having benches for side chairs. If the person in the middle needs out, the other two on the bench must move also. Just as bad, all three are stuck at the same distance from the table. Does NOT work. When next I decorate a dining room I will be coming at it from a different perspective. I have my Grandmother's French polished, solid black walnut suite with table and two leaves, 5 side chairs, 1 Carver, plus sideboard from 1921. The house will be designed and built to accomodate that furniture as well as other heirloom pieces in other rooms. With the dining room, the walls will be wainscoting with a Wedgwood Jasperware sage green on the walls. The dining room is an evening room more than most rooms in the house. The requirements are very specific. Personally, all of your examples of a formal dining table are casual, some to the extreme end of the scale. When I have my house built I will be hosting Black Tie dinners from time to time. I want the room to be very formal and proper. For those familiar with Mapp And Lucia, Hughtum will be rare. Titum will be a regular thing. Scrub will be pretty much every week. When you were talking about your mother's dining room, the mistake was yours. When there is a piece that is loved, the good designer works to incorporate that piece into the design as an integral part of the whole. When it is a formal piece like that, and I must say it is both beautiful and quite new if only 30 years old, an eclectic, even eccentric layering of accessories is the way to go. The best of English Country House design, where each generation adds to the collection and it all works because everything is always the best of its kind. Nothing stands out; it blends.

Yes, please! Working with a red oak floor throughout the whole main area. It's not that awful honey oak of the 80s, especially once I redo kitchen cabinets and put in tall white baseboards and white walls, but still wondering how to add some depth with more woods.

Please offer your tips on how to style a dining area when it is part of the living room as in a condo. Older style apartments that have a long narrow room that is living on one end and dining on the other. I not only have this but have small 8’x11’ covered outdoor terrace off the dining area. I love the space but struggling to find a coherent design style for the space.

Yes, we need a color matching with wood video. I have cherry wood floors and it took me 2-3 months of color sampling before committing. I needed the wall color to not only complement the floor but also the fixture, the room doors, my furniture and the hallway walls for that complementary transition.

Hi Julie, thanks for the video! Choosing shape of the table was an eye opener for me. I replaced my round table by rectangular to host more people but now I also know it better suits the space! I do have a question though - I plan to do a gallery wall in the dining area of the great room (on the focal wall) and I have a huge piece of art that I love above the sofa in the conversational area (dame focal wall) that goes almost all the way to the cieling... Do I need to match upper line of my gallery wall in the dining area with the upper line of the painting above sofa so that they are on the same height? It is too high (too close to the ceiling) than I would normally do with the picture gallery, but they would be on the same wall, so I am worried that having them end on different height would create disbalance. Is there a rule on this?

No, I wouldn’t match that line at all for the gallery. You don’t want them competing, so best if you treat the two as separate installations Natalia.

I held my breath, waiting to see if I made any of the design mistakes. I got out my tape measure and rechecked my clearances. In the end, I checked all the correct boxes except the focal wall, but only because I have yet to find the work of art I want there. Excellent video Julie. Mahalo from Maui 🌸🌈

I love all of your tips and rules of thumb. What do you think of a chandelier in a vaulted stairwell? At some point could you do a practical family type arrangement or maybe a little country. Most people don't live the way you're photographs outline, but your ideas are just tremendous.

If you have the room and have a smaller family for gatherings, buy a round table and make every chair an armchair - great place to see everyone and sit for hours in comfort. Watch glass top - no one wants to look at the feet of others when eating. Light fixture uplit, not shining down on the people - harsh, unflattering.

Hi love your videos! I have a table that I bought before I found my house we don't have a formal dining room just a kitchen nook. My table barely fits how do I decorate this space ?The nook does have beautiful bay windows ...but curtains in the kitchen seem strange to me. I'm trying to make this space more like a dining room .

I can relate with the Asian cherry wood furniture. We have cherry wood sofa and matchy coffee table in our house. They are so old school, uncomfortable to sit and bulky. We never sit on the sofa. Yet they are expensive back then and my dad won't part with them. My mom actually want to switch to loveseats and armchairs. They have been arguing about renovating the living room for a few years and the argue is still ongoing lol.

My dining room is 11’10” x12’9” and my dining table is 84” long. What size rug do I need?? I can’t do an 8x10 that’s too small and a 9x12 will eat up the length of the room

You could either have a rug cut and bound to within 6" of the room size on all sides (pricey), keep your eyes out for an 11 x 11 square rug (time consuming), or skip the rug and do molding on the ceiling or a paint treatment to help define the space. Also, since you have a luxurious long table, you could put chairs only on the sides (3 on each side), and not the ends to give yourself more circulation space most of the time and pull in extra chairs at the ends when you really need them to seat 8.

One also had the most flexibility and options in paint colors. It’s much easier to choose a rug or major artwork first, then a paint color after. The other way around, one may never find the right rugs, etc., to work with the paint, so end up having to repaint or have mis-matches, like the room you showed with the huge green chairs, peachy walls and red and blue rug, none of which harmonize with each other. I like to use the more highly colored, patterned or decorative features, whether patterned large upholstered items, rugs, wallpaper, etc., that take up a lot of space and make the biggest statement, as inspiration for the rest of the room.

The 9x12 rug is actually a small choice for an 96” (10 top) table. Prioritize your needs Jocelyne- larger table with custom rug or smaller rug and smaller table

I like matching furniture. To me, mismatched seems like I can’t afford a set and thrifted random pieces. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE thrifting, but the mismatch furniture is a no for me. To me, a light oak table with black chairs are a match IF the table legs are black, for example. Or upholstered chairs “match” a table if the legs are the same wood and stain as the table.

Old school, yes. Tacky, it doesn’t have to be. I bust out white or black linens for my dinner parties. I find it romantic/elegant/formal, especially with candelabras and votives. I just don’t keep my table dressed with linens for everyday use. Do what you love though Aydina, it’s your home ☺️👍🏻

One thing I personally don’t like, are tables over 29.5 inches tall. The last time we went out to eat, I had to lift my arms just to reach the plate. I felt like a kid. I understand that the human race is getting taller, but if you are a short family, don’t go past 29.5 inches! 😅
