Hi!I have found out that if you turn your head with the mouth just 1 cm above the water surface and you don't raise your forehead out of the water,there is much lower drag that taking the head completely out of the water.I also foud out that moving your head as little as possible,keeps the drag to a minimum and thus a constant speed thru water.

I'm excited to try this. My goal this year is to become a stronger swimmer, and I can only do about 10 laps with rest time in between. I always feel like I'm getting fatigued, and I figured it was because of my lack of continuous oxygen, so this confirmed that. I didn't realize the pocket of air was there. I feel like I'm always gasping for air, even right after taking a breath. So it could be a combination of me holding my breath too long, and also the fact that I'm out of shame, haha. Thanks for the instruction! I'll give it a go.

Athena Chen Well after three weeks of training (maybe) it should all start feeling more natural. I swam from age 4 to 16, and only on my last every length did it all come together and i beat my pools record set by my Olympic coach who was 30 when he set it. 16 years on and i got back in a pool only a few days ago and i'm back to being 4, i can hardly do two lengths without not getting enough air breathing every fourth stroke. It will get better.

If I exhale underwater, my body sinks and I have to move my arms and legs faster which all of this can make me get tired. What I do is tilt my head exhale out of the water and inhale at the same time then continue my stroke. Not professional, but it can make my body float and I can go swimming for more than 1 hour everyday.
@zx6dave77
@zx6dave77 10 лет назад
Practice exhaling while keeping your chest expanded and then you won't sink. You can practice by floating on your back and getting to where you can breath in and out while keeping your chest expanded.

I am learning swimming for past 5 months , I face lots of problems with free style . My Question is , when I need to take breath , shall my neck turn to breath or shall i move trunk and head together a little (not overall) to take a bite of the air? I have many mistakes , i swim too slow in freestyle and its hard to complete lap without taking a break upon 50m completion . Kindly help thank you
@USMastersSwimming
@USMastersSwimming 7 лет назад
We recommend connecting with a Masters Swimming program so you can have a coach watch your swimming. If you are having trouble making it 50 meters, try using a snorkel to take breathing out of the equation so you can focus on perfecting your arm and leg movement.
@linuxguru27
@linuxguru27 7 лет назад
Thank you For replying.. 1. how can i do "connecting with a Masters Swimming program ". 2. I swim 50m without breathing problem but i get exhausted and then I have to take 30seconds break and then i continue swimming another 50m. 3. I breathe only using right side of head , is it ok to use only one side breathing?
@USMastersSwimming
@USMastersSwimming 7 лет назад
For 1. You can go to this link, type in your zip code and find a team near you: www.usms.org/placswim/ 2. Your endurance will come once you practice more and find a coach to help with technique 3. Yes, it is OK to only breath to one-side. As you get better, breathing to both sides is recommended.

i keep drinking water...what did i do wrong?
@Modernwolf1
@Modernwolf1 10 лет назад
me too, I'm trying to get rid of it so badly, will be putting this video into practice tomorrow. Like the last time I drank water, the water surface was in surge motion because the pool was so crowded. almost 100 people or more were in the pool. And next time in that situation, I assume that I need to rotate my head even more and trying to put into practice should help
@frafranildo
@frafranildo 10 лет назад
Since I don't see you, I can't tell you for sure, but in my case, I had a bad posture which made it hard to breathe properly. As I noticed and adjusted my spine, I stopped drinking/ inhaling water. I think "eagle chest" to myself, as a reminder. Also worked on my head, instead of it from the water. As the video shows, your cheek must be parallel to the water. But the posture is the essential part.
@iraman315
@iraman315 10 лет назад
You need to practice more breathing under water
@ronmann802
@ronmann802 10 лет назад
If you are drinking water, you are probably rotating with your mouth already open. You should be still blowing during the rotation out, preferably through your nose and mouth. Body position it's a big factor too as pointed by Frajolao... Make sure you are in perfect and relaxed streamlined position. Look it up and correct your body posture.... Make sure your kicking is correct too. If you are kicking from your knee down only your hips will sink and your breathing gets harder as well.... cheers

@dontspankustoohard
@dontspankustoohard 9 лет назад
Exhaling while I'm underwater actually makes me more fatigued
@Mr_MikeMikeMike
@Mr_MikeMikeMike 9 лет назад
I don't think that is the case. What might be making you fatigued is (I'm assuming this) that you are exhaling when you turn to take a breath. You are trying to exhale and inhale in such a short amount of time which could making your even more tired and have a loss of breathe. Also, don't swallow the air you breathe as it will sit in your stomach and make you feel bloated until you burp it up
@dontspankustoohard
@dontspankustoohard 9 лет назад
TheBraveGoat I mean as soon as my head hits the water I'm exhaling, i'll have to try again a few more times cause right now I got school exams but next time I have time for the pool i'll have to keep trying it since evidently I'm not getting expected results.
@Mr_MikeMikeMike
@Mr_MikeMikeMike 9 лет назад
dontspankustoohard It's all about practice. Try breathing every other stroke on your more comfortable side and take nice long strokes. Without lifting your head from the water, take a breath and then exhale through your nose at a rate in which you aren't trying to blow the air out as fast as possible but at a comfortable exhalation like when you are just breathing. It is really all about timing. You'll get it. And I begin to exhale right when my face enters the water again. You just need to release the air at a steady rate similar to how fast you take in a breath.
@dontspankustoohard
@dontspankustoohard 9 лет назад
TheBraveGoat Now what would say to breathing both sides? Cause when I used to breath to my comfortable right side I found myself ending up swimming to the right at a lake when I only moved to one side, but with both sides they say you go in a straight line. How would you kinda get used to that?
@Mr_MikeMikeMike
@Mr_MikeMikeMike 9 лет назад
dontspankustoohard I have never had an issue of not swimming straight. No matter how you breathe, you should swim straight. If not, it is probably your stroke. You could also be rotating to much when you take a a breath. However, when i swim in a pool, you have a line to look at so i dont exactly know.

IMHO Body position in the water is the most important component to swimming faster and efficiently, and the position of your head dictates the position of the rest of your body. Look forward, with your hairline cresting the surface of the water in front of you (if your hairline is receding, then make sure that your forehead is just below the surface!)I .

THIS WORKS FOR ME: I found regulating breath-intake difficult; then I thought that perhaps I could learn from how I breathe when SINGING. This too also involves taking a quick breath of as much air as you plan to use and then controlling the exhaling. So I started to sing "to myself" as I swim-easier because I breathe every four strokes, and there are a lot of songs in 4/4 so one line of the song will work out as one cycle of strokes (I started with "Up a Lazy River"). It works really well-helps you relax, coordinate movement and, if you think of singing to yourself around the house at a low volume (not reaching the back of an opera house), it helps you take small breaths too. And it's fun.

One of my main issues is breathing, unfortunately i seem to struggle to time breathing alongside my strokes (front crawl normally) and this means i'm almost always having to stop after only one length to catch my breath :/ Also does anyone else find that when they try not to lift their head too far out of the water they end up with a mouthful of the water? :( xx

I've watched damn near every video, had two coaches and have spent 2 months trying to learn freestyle and all I've gotten is more and more confused! " The air at the surface is just as good as the air 10" above" smart ass Stu! We (me, I) rotate so i can get air! Not "A bite of air" as you say, but a freaking lung full. I'm a distance runner and I don't exhale for 3 to 4 strides before i inhale, so why is this coached in swimming. So confused. Gonna give this till the end of October(3rd month) then i'm sticking to land based sports.

When you need to breathe in just raise your head up until your mouth is outside water. Quickly breathe in and put your head back in water. Swimming is needs the mental focus and control.

I'm not new in swimming but had not done it in many years. Lately I decided to swim again and realized I'd forgot how to breathe right when doing freestyle. Great info! Thanks for the video!

I tried doing this (constantly enhaling) and while I always had breath, it seemed as if my body had way too much oxygen and everything felt weird. I tried it for about a km, then went back to my old bad habbit of starting to exhale the stroke before you'll enhale. What did I do wrong?

I'm not sure why, but I have the most difficult time breathing out my nose. It's like the water gets stuck. I'm a beginner, what am I doing wrong?

I'm failing to blow bubbles.. Once i try to do it i mess up everything. But i manage well with holding my breath nd taking out my head out after four five strokes. How dangerous is this technique that I'm applying?? But I'm really trying with the blowing bubbles thing just that it makes me mess up the coordination

Summing up- 1.Constantly Leg beating should be there. 2. Look Down 90° preferably always. Or a little diagonal. 3. One gogle in and one out while taking breathe.

I was actually the inventor of swimming altogether. People before 1956-8 just sank to the bottom and were never seen again. I invented everything concerning swimming and competative swimming at my invention of the olympic swimming pool at the DYC Detroit.

when u say "take a bite" does it mean that you do not inhale? I inhale and end up with a mouth of water but if I do not I do not get enough oxygen :(

Initially, I used to try hard to inhale and my instincts refused the idea of inhaling within a fraction of second on demand. All of a sudden, one day, I found that I don't need to consciously inhale, rather I need to consciously exhale. So, that just opening our mouth a bit above the level of water forced the air to get in. I can inhale both ways.

Taking a bite means you do not need a "gulp" of air. Gulping air will leave you uncomfortable, with too much air to exhale before you come up again. Only a bite is needed to get you through the next 2 or 3 seconds your head is underwater.

How do I exhale from my nose? Every time I try to do it, I get water going inside my nose ;-(
@ronmann802
@ronmann802 10 лет назад
that means you're not really exhaling... You're breathing in a bit as well. During the rotation of your head, as your face is going from looking down to looking to the side, you should be blowing still, and harder, so as to push the water away from your nose and mouth, then the breathing will happen naturally. Your lungs are empty and the air will go in. But, don't forget to blow, not to inhale. Practice standing in shallow water at waist level, bending forward to a horizontal position, and rotate like that several times... good luck

I started a course of freestyle a few weeks ago and tried breathing out trough my nose, but It takes so much strength. There's just too much water there:-/. Is that normal? I noticed it works a LITTLE better when I also exhale through my mouth. Why is that? Any one any suggestions? Thanks!
