Great video this is super well put together with a ton of useful advice. This will help a lot of people to get that old MIG running great again. I am a bit picky and put these parts on and in every year or so. I like to solve the problem before it is a problem, that is what you do also and that is one reason your work is clean and neat. I run a metal to dirt hard face that is hard on the welder. I bought a broken miller for 200$ and fixed that welder and use it for hard face and inershield wire only. I must say that I love the original content of this video. Thank you for posting this. I expect a lot of views and likes for this.

Hi Matt, great video. I have an ancient Cebora 180 Turbo MIG (don't laugh!) I found changing the liner from a plastic tube to the coiled wire type made a huge difference, it just works now. Keeping wire in a ziplock bag or cling film helps keep the wire usable too. Cheers Julia.

As someone who does not use their mig for months I find putting the whole machine in a plastic bag helps, And if the wire is rusty you can usually feed 20-30 ft out. I use CRC teflon spray down the liner. Works well. As for the rest you are 100% spot on. Though too many migs have bad rollers from new!

Great information, thanks for sharing your knowledge. My welder is similar to yours, but much older and only 180 amps. I have never serviced it, and I particularly like your earth clamp mod, bolted inside. My welder has a 6 position switch, but now only works on the high setting! I suspect the rotary switch, are this easy to get and change?

I would add, you should blow out the whip occasionally, i was having a lot of intemittant problems with my welds with the welder i use at work, (TA-190) it would feel like wire slipping, then no gas, etc, etc, just doing bizzare things. By accident I found the issue, it was dust build-up in the whip. This thing welds great now.

Good one, another thing to check is the polarity change, some machine;s have tabs to swap over held in place by nuts, if the nuts get loose, the tabs arc when the trigger is pulled, can drive you nuts (geddit) trying to fault find. Also, for anyone new to MIG welding, check the shroud for spatter build up, (you get arcing in the shroud) and wire burn back on the tip-wire wont feed. Good point on the rusty wire, I've heard it said that running flux core wire, then changing to gas shielded can sometimes cause problems as the fluxcore can contaminate the liner, but I've never had that problem myself.
@roberttill3787

A tip given to me many years ago by an experienced welder was get a pice of thick celled foam and pierce it with the mig wire before threading it into the roller guide tube, then a considerable amount of crap will be wiped off before it enters the welder. I tried this, and it makes a great difference as for a start the rollers dont skid on crap, and the wire feeds up the liner much better.
@roberttill3787

@frank o'brien an ear plug is a really good idea for a bit of foam, and would be plenty big enough. Good tip, Frank!

Just curious, you pointed out that the liner should be cut flush with the end of the gun. I have a Blue Point (Snap On) MB135. I got it used and can't find any manual for it. Do you know if ALL liners are cut flush like that? I already changed the liner and I'm not sure how it happened but the liner is 3/8 to a half inch shy of the end of the gun. Right now I hit the trigger and I get one spark and the wire burns back to the contact tip and then nothing. I'm thinking either the liner or the ground is bad or both. any thoughts would be great. By the way, I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video! Jon

I bought a cheap Harbor Freight wire welder Chicago Welder Flux 125 a couple years ago. I was moving so didn't get a chance to use it back them. Setup was ok and tried it. Just got a good spark then nothing. Wire comes through still but no weld spark. I've tried the ground, checked inside the 2 glass fuses on board. All seem ok. Since I didn't use it for so long it's well out of warranty and still brand new. Any advice would be appreciated. TYIA

I noticed that the chart on the inside cover (of the photos of the one I am looking at) mentions welding aluminium, but I don't see any connections on your machine for a spool gun or whatever. Very good explanation of what goes wrong and how to over come them. However you get what you pay for, hobbyist welders are no way as good as yours and the infrequent use makes it worse.

Hi, after alot of trouble free welding, today my Cebora pocket turbo 130 mig started blowing the wire inside the torch, just below the thread where tip screws in, so basically popping the wire just like a fuse just in that gap where liner ends and tip starts. After cleaning and rethreading 6 times, it did it every time. It's like the wire is Earthing out or something? Any ideas what it can be? Thanks.

Great video with great info. I am looking at getting a mig. Would you go for an inverter or transformer one for home ? About 200amp. Also would you go single phase or three phase ? Thanks for sharing,. Cheers
@Urchfab
@Urchfab 6 лет назад
Unless you have 3 phase at your house? then single phase. I like the old transformers for reliability and price but you dont get all the fancy features of the inverter machines so depends what your planning to do with it mostly?
@fred463
@fred463 3 года назад
Either one will work the old transformers last longer. My transformer one is over 20 yrs old and I have only has to change to tips and liners so far. The inverters can be had cheaply I just bought a 205 Yeswelder inverter for US $369 mig, tig, and stick. Add the cost of the bottle and tig torch if you want it.

Have a box that spins out wire well, sounds like all powered up, but the contactor doesn't click and allow current to pass to the gun.. wanted to know how to test, if can just push in the electromagnet switch manually to see if arc, what amount of power engages, if on all the time machine is on or only during feed, etc..

Hi, can you answer a question on gas, I only do small jobbing repairs with a mig and can't justify argon, so going to use C02, mate that runs a pub has offered to lend me a bottle, question is, the C02 in pubs are a mix of what I don't know, 90/10 80/20 and so on, does this mix make any difference to mig welding?
@TheSimoc
@TheSimoc Год назад
I really don't know, but have a couple of thoughts. Sometimes SodaStream bottles are used with MIG welders, and there are adapters for specifically them. Such usage has two handy scenarios: when doing small on-site weld jobs when the size and weight of the gas bottle would be cumbersome, and as an emergency backup when you run out of gas while welding your car during sunday evening, when all official gas providing shops are closed but you can still go buying SodaStream bottles from local grocery store. Thus, my thinking goes, I don't think the pub gas too much differs from the SodaStream gas which is made for essentially same purpose. But sure there may be differences, and I remotely remember - not sure how correctly - that nitrogen is sometimes used with beers. But I think it isn't bad with welding either, it is basically uncombustible gas. But I'm not sure how it might react with certain hot metals, but on the other hand IIRC nitrogen is also used in some welding setups.

There's 1 machine at work which we all agree is shit, new "ish" jasic 3 phase machine. I can put a lovely smooth looking bead down (spray arc) but the next day on the same settings it comes out almost lumpy looking with loads of silica at the toes. No matter what settings I try it'll run like that until it magically works good again (but only nearly as good as the other machines) Any tips on what this might be? Have tried fresh wire, new tips, new sheath, tighter/looser wire feed, different earth placement you name it. Everything other than opening the actual thing up.
@peterroper9090
@peterroper9090 2 года назад
Edit* Also when it's playing up the puddle seems to move super slow, increasing volts makes it too fluid (puddle starts dancing) and more wire just makes it spatter like hell.

Take your finger off the trigger lol. How do you actually stop the wire when this happens?Your welder may have a latch setting in which you press the trigger to stsrt welding (feeding wire) & to stop the welding process you press the trigger again It's normally used on longer welds to help with fatigue. Turn that function off if its on. Otherwise your handpiece might be faulty. Hope that helps
