A friend has a Troy-built push mower, with a Briggs and Stratton engine that wont start. Can we get it running for him. I'm suspecting the carburetor is the issue.

Great Video. One of the common issues with this carb' is the plastic choke touches the metal bracket (that holds the air filter) and hangs up in the open position. If you run a metal nail file down between the choke and the bracket you can shave just enough plastic off to fix it and you do not have to remove the carb'. This is super easy. And it fixes a NO START issue.

Robert Clark you are a gentleman and a scholar. Your suggestion did the trick for me. With about 4 hours invested, I had already changed spark plug, air filter, emptied gas tank, removed fuel line to inspect and then bit the bullet and searched on carburetor videos. Thanks E&R for an excellent video. It gave me enough info to decide that perhaps my relatively new mower's carburetor wasn't the issue or that at least today was not the day to disassemble mine. By God's grace I read a few comments and found Robert's here at the top. I also learned that you can cause the plastic choke to stay open by not being careful about how you replace the mower top lid. 🙂

Thank you for the great video! I was just about to toss my lawnmower in the trash until I did this. This was a Father's Day gift from my boys. Ran out of gas, put in clean gas, and then it died. The only thing I would be careful with is the float metal rod, it falls off easily if you remove it. Thanks again!

Thank you for this video! My Toro Super Recycler was reving up and down and then intermittently would just quit. This video gave me the confidence to pull the carburetor apart and do the cleaning as you have shown. One thing I encountered was some resistance re-seating the carburetor which required a little force due to the plastic seal ring.

Thanks for posting this. I had the same issue. I removed the top cover, but did not remove the linkages to the carb. pulled the bottom cup off...bunch of debris came out with the gas. I then used my air compressor to clean the carb (at least blow it out). Reconnected, started right up. Problem solved.

Take the upper cover off and lift the tank out to rinse it out with clean gas. The carb and tank can come off together without fighting the short fuel hose. Dump the fuel in a jar. Inspect the tank screen. Send the carb fuel back into the tank to clear the screen, then remove tank cap and pour into a large mouth clear jar. Then the problem doesn't repeat often. Let it sit. If you have anything in the bottom of the jar, pour off and retain it. Use the upper part of the fuel in your pickup. Use fresh fuel in the small engine. Floral wire measures right for poking those jet holes. If you haven't yet bought torch tip cleaner. I was so glad to learn this instead of buying more and shipping Chinese junque. But that's where everything's coming from. A jet can fix some carbs. A metal needle valve with Viton tip, can fix others. A q-tip In a drill can clean the needle seat. Use fresh gas and don't leave today's gas sitting in the mower. Use it up. You can drain the bowl with an Allen. Then a short long container can catch it. These work well once a mechanic re-works them.
@ranflee1

Good advice. The owner had already flushed the tank. And cleaned the bowl. Just didn’t know anything more to do.

before storing the lawnmower for the winter remove the gas by tipping the lawnmower over to it's side then turning the lawnmower on till it dies out by itself and store it when mowing season comes just put fresh gas this will help you not having starting issues in the beginning of the mowing season old gas or water in the gas will give you problems.

There are two very common issues with this carb i've seen, the first is the jet needs opening up (as you sugest) the second is float pin wear, with the bottom off the carb, flip it over so it's upside down and check to see it the float is parallel with the carb body in the shut possition!! if it isn't just bin it and buy another because what it does is seep fuel into the cylinder bore and over time it dilutes the engine oil prematurely wearing the engine internals with out any real sign of an issue.

These OEM carbs are 40 bucks a pop.. if you’re having carb issues you can easily clean this carb. It’s easy to take off and the jet set is easy to clean.. but keep in mind once you’re having carb issues the likelihood of it happening again is 90 percent. Just spend the money and replace the damn thing.. replacing is easier than fixing 3 times.. and much less time consuming. Run non ethanol gas that has a year or more shelf life not the crap you get outta the normal Pump down the street

@@ranflee1 our personal mower is a troybilt with B&S plastic carb with primer bulb and starts up on first pull. The toro I'm working on has the plastic carb but auto choke and even when that chole is close it take 4 or 5 good hard pulls to start it then runs rough. I thinks theres something else wrong but I haven't had that much experience with these new plastic carburetors

Yes , that’s why I said most. The one in this video and others I’ve seen starts first pull. However my new toro also takes 4 pulls ,but runs good once started. My old toro with primer 1st pull. I haven’t figured out why, but haven’t really had time to look into it yet.

Urghhh i took out the carborator cleaned it put it back together then gas started leaking out of carborator. So I opened it up and looked carborator and saw a tiny piece under the floater that wasnt in place. So I put this tiny little pencil ✏ looking piece back on floater and then closed it back up and attempted to start. It did not. And I also noticed a tiny bit of smoke coming from silver box towards the front
@ranflee1

The 🖊 looking thing is the float needle. Make sure the wire is on the float correctly. The wire needs to go over the tab towards the inside of the float .

@@ranflee1 what wire?
@ranflee1
@ranflee1 Год назад
I’m sorry, I was thinking of the older style carbs. This one does not have a wire on the needle. Make sure it is in the slot on the float and the float is not just sitting on the needle. But honestly I’m not sure that’s possible. Did you hit anything before this problem? If so you may have sheared the flywheel key. I asked because you mentioned the smoke. It might be indicating a timing issue.

Thanks for the input. I would like to say that I have repair many types of carbs (from chainsaws to motorcycles and automotive) and there are some that’s this would not be my first course of action. It would be the last resort if soaking and compressed air and carb cleaner didn’t work. In this case the insert is $15-$20 . If it didn’t work , no big loss. That being said ,my buddies mower starts first pull and runs great to this day. At $0 I call that a win.
