An emboldened far-right has heightened its attacks on Queer and Trans communities on a number of culture war fronts that seek to remove educational programs, social services, and human rights from public institutions based on gender and sexual identities. These communities and their allies have pushed back, taking these fights to school boards, libraries, and other arenas of the public sphere, confronting hateful far-right movements when they emerge from incubation and take to the streets.
Some would argue that such energy and focus on matters of “pronouns”, “culture war” and “wokeness” are not as substantial as the struggle for material equality. With this perspective, these battles are not covered in the mainstream media effectively, if at all. However, Queer and Trans-folk have always battled as the tip-of-the-spear against anti-democratic forces that maintain systems of inequality. How should we unite these social movements in our common struggle against the far-right?
