In Japan they had leftist protests throughout the 1960s, starting with the issue of US military bases in 1960, and then into the 1980s with the issue of building a new airport in Tokyo. In the early 1960s there were also minor rightists attacks (a particular one occurred when a newspaper published s cartoon mocking Emperor Hirohito, leading to a teenager attempting to murder the newspaper's owner). Despite this, the ruling LDP (conservative/nationalist/monarchist) party retained complete control of the Government throughout this period. They won a majority in every single election between 1995-1991.

it sounds like a near miss only stopped my MacArthur, but in reality, obviously the US would have stopped any communist activity there that would have threatened them. its honestly surprising that the occupation forces didn't suppress the communists more given that this was Douglass "drop the bommbies on asian commies" MacArthur but who knows, he seemed to have a soft spot for the Japanese. maybe he admired their military's atrocious crimes.

That action does not deserve the name of the Communist Party,” party chief Kazuo Shii said at its convention, held for the first time in three years, referring to Beijing’s expansionary activities in the East and South China seas."

It shouldn’t be a surprise a Japanese political group of any stripe disagrees with a Chinese political group of any stripe-the issue is that left wing groups (in South Korea and Japan) are likely of the position that they would rather try to balance issues between US and PRC’s interests and play them against each other in hopes of an India-like 3rd way, whereas the right wing party tend to prefer a hardline anti-Communist position with US backing. Thus, the right wing political parties in Japan and South Korea has had a massive head start on funding and organization while most left wing political parties are generally fledgling in nature and often struggle badly when they gain power-often allowing right wing parties to retake power pretty quickly. I don’t have a strong grasp of who the right wing party is in South Korea, but in Japan, it is the “Liberal Democratic Party” that is Japan’s dominant right wing party.

CCP accuses China of being a Chinese Social Imperialism and wants to rob China's assets in the Philippines. At the same time, it leads many Maoists to scold China. Now all Maoists hate China. On the contrary, many European Communist parties like Russia very much. Not long ago, I saw the Greek communist party claim that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was the help of socialism. in 1989 when Soviet Union collapsed, secret document from Sanzo Nosaka to Moscow became public. Nosaka blackmailed a few JCP members staying in Moscow in 1939 as a spay of the Japanese Government and they were all rounded up and killed by Soviet Communist Party. In 1989, Sanzo Nosaka was still alive and he was an honorable chairman of JCP. But once this document became public it became a big embarrassment for JCP and he was deposed permanently.

If we're going to talk about Communist parties that tried to seize power legally and peacefully you guys should also do episodes on the Italian and French Communist parties! They both gained lots of support in the immediate post-war years, and the Italian Communists continued to gain 30% of the national vote well into the 70s!

@@redzeckez3346 1) Work on your English 2) Mussolini was a Socialist (not Communist) before World War I, but was kicked from the party during the war because he supported it. Supporting or resisting the war ultimately split the Italian Socialists. The "mutilated victory" was what drove him to the right and establish his fascist party.

Japanese communist movements are a very interesting topic that doesn’t seem mentioned too often. I’ve been having a look at some propaganda pieces from Japan emerging in the early 1900s and there are some amazing pieces from various socialist movements, candidates, clubs and such.

my grandpa was a farmer and Marxist. he said it was the disappointment in the government that converted him after war. there must have been substantial number of communists in his generation because our neighbor was a full-blown communist too and they discussed things and stuff every night. we even bought Akahata for a while and I remember reading a propaganda-filled shoujo manga in it!

Capitalist countries build physical and metaphorical walls to keep out people escaping there from their slave-states, they have no need to prevent their own from escaping en masse to countries they themselves are either keeping down or collaborating with, its not a real risk for them outside of an influetial minority, such as Snowden, Dotcom, Assange, Caruana Galizia or the like. Also curiously every time one of these modern day colonies starts having doubts about the benevolence of greed and corruption, there will be capitalists with guns in their hands to stamp it down.

Oh that reminds me, in Kosaku Shima (a manga about a corporate employee in 1980s Japan) there are one chapter where he met a young employee that were active in communist organizing in which Shima disagree with him

IIRC, Ryosuke Takahashi, the author of Dougram, VOTOMS and other 80s mecha series used to say that his mother was a labour union activist, participating in the 60s struggle, and the Dougram storyline is heavily inspired by Cuban revolution. And Ryoko Ikeda, author of Rose of Versailles also had some sort of connection to communist party. She even travelled to Leningrad while collecting material for Orpheus no Mado.

There was a game on the Playstation 2 that deal with a split Japan, democratic south and communist north. Americans and Soviets propping up their respective puppet states. It was a strategy game using primitive mechs and ground troops. Was called Ring of Red I believe.

I can certainly imagine it's an uphill battle in Japan at the moment given that China is the only sugar daddy out there, and the general population of Japan has one of the most negative opinions of China (86%) in the world (according to Pew Research Center, anyway - Pew also said that the US is 73% unfavorable but I feel like it's much higher than that).

What's crazy is if Japan had dragged out the war further, the Soviets would have eventually invaded from the northern part of Japan and we would basically have a North/South Korea situation playing out. But the Japanese were terrified of communism and took them no time to warm up to the Americans and I can't say I blame them.

Umm, no? I really do not get where people get the idea the Soviets were in any position to invade mainland Japan. The American projections for a successful mainland invasion required more troops and had higher casualty projections than D-Day. That was with near undisputed Pacific Ocean control and hundreds of ships by that point. Wtf were the Soviets gonna invade with? Proletariat forces bundling together and floating like ants in a river from the Sakhalin Islands to Hokaido, a few outdated destroyers perpetually stuck in Vladivostok, and whatever amphibious landing craft they could hastily scrap together in a few months before the Americans attacked?

so in early 1960, Okinawan communists had announced their leader was dead, I suppose to indicate they were no longer a threat, nothing to see over here My Dad was Army MI, 1st enlistment after "peacetime" draft (he had dropped a college math class so was not a full time student) in Okinawan jungle he got a telephoto photo of the guy rallying his followers, Not Dead

I read it, as a romanian i was very excited to finally read the memoirs of a securitate general. It was clearly a propaganda piece, i doubt it had 10% truth in it. It is a piece of crap book, i would recommend people ignore the book, or at least not believe what is written.

I heard one of the strike tactics of the JCP were that they kept working, but threw out the bosses, this way they couldn’t be pointed at for causing problems that would affect people since they are still working, but abusive or corrupt bosses wouldn’t get the money. I might be wrong though. JCP sounds so interesting either way.

The only things Japanese were spared from were higher wage and the right to strike without threat of military intervention. Good video. My son who lived in Japan for three years told me that most pachinko parlors are owned and run by 'North Koreans.' Huh? (It's like calling a multi-generational American family named Schmidt 'East German.') Apparently the ethnic Koreans who run the parlors are from North Korea and maintain ties with the North Korean government.

Back in the days before the Korean War, the South Korean government, desperate for allies, threw the korean minority under the bus to win the friendship of Tokyo. The North Korean government moved in in their stead. They are the ones running the korean schools in Japan. So for a long time, the korean minority in Japan was loyal to Pyongyang. Afaik, the situation is changing, but slowly. North Korea still has a lot of influence in the community.

Japanese culture is very collectivist already, so a lot of the ideals of communism are compatible with Japanese culture and thus it's not far fetched for it to be that popular among the general population there.
