I love the oncidium twinkles, I have a Tsiku Marguerite with some buds ready but not as many this year and the Pink Profusion is even smaller but has many many buds this year getting ready to open. ❤

Twinkles are 1 plant that teaches patience! 😂😂 your right by the time they twig you may not see blooms for 6 months! Crazy! I chopped my collection of Twinkles back some. I have small divisions now. I had a couple that was in 8 inch pots! Got way to big! 😂

I’m so glad you did Twinkle! I can’t believe how much trouble I had with this one. At first, I didn’t water it enough and it would dry out. So I put it in bark. Still too dry. Then on sphagnum and self watering with a wick. Yup. Rot. I have now done rot-removal and repotted into bark in the self-watering wick. It recovering nicely. Maybe next year, it will bloom!

Thanks for the care tips for oncidium! I noticed my first flower spike shadow on 15 Aug, and now it's the waiting "patience" game 🤣 finger cross! I hope I can be patient for the next 6 months!

Beautiful display. Roxy and I once clocked ours at 7 months. It was brutal, torturous and painfully slow. And then mine died haha. So I'm trying again like you said, in a more airy chunky mix, as it was in mostly sphagnum last time... but again, yours is beautiful!
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 7 месяцев назад
Omg Vin! It died after waiting, that's torturous!! I think chunky mix or mount will work for you. All of my recommendations on how I grow here in NY are so different in humid Florida. Sphagnum is tough down there because it's so humid!

I have just got twinkles ‘red fantasy’ and love it. It is still very small, but finished blooming and has new growth. It seems to be doing well. I also noticed that it loves water in my dry environment. I would like to get a few more kinds with white and yellow flowers.

I love them! And such a beautiful fragrance too ❤ I will do an update on them soon. I have 4 , all are in bloom now. I only struggle a bit with keeping the leaves nice green and healthy. I will try a bit less light. Hopefully that helps. Thank you for the video! ❤

Thanks, Nicole! Agree they’re easy (but I too learned the hard way when I was giving them Oncidium Sweet Sugar light and burned leaves pretty badly.) The time they take to go from spike to full bloom *is*forever! I have the Pink Profusion, which usually is in full bloom around Xmas.

Hi Nicole, greetings from Australia, Twinkles are my favourites which is pretty obvious as I have 10, including the parents Sotoanum and Cheirophorum. I know there are some colours out there I don’t have and due to our quarantine restrictions, probably never will 😔 When they all bloom together it is spectacular!! I read once that you could “die waiting” for the spikes to bloom and that is so very true. Mine live inside in winter and outside in summer, however I am just about to bring them inside for the next 2 days with predicted temperatures in the mid 40+C (104+F), not comfortable temperatures for me … or them. Thank you for highlighting your Twinkle 😊

Hi Nicole, I have the same plant as you but have had nothing but struggles with it. The first one I received from the nursery had bulbs rotting and not a very good plant so I complained and received a replacement which is not much better. It must be almost 3 years in my care and I moved it outside into bright light but more bulbs rotted and the plant is almost half its original size. It’s in a loose mixture of bark, moss, leca & perlite which I consider ok. I’ve brought it back inside because we’re having very hot weather and I’m going to give it to the end of summer, if there’s no sign of improvement it will have to go, I’ve run out of patience I’m sorry to say. Thanks for sharing your beautiful plant and good advice on its care, I’m a little more encouraged to give mine another chance.
@NicoleDeanna

I'm so sorry to hear that, you probably got a plant that was already struggling with rot the first time. I hope the second one pulls through. Try to make sure it's not getting excessively bright light. I'm assuming your in Australia in the middle of summer? If so just be sure to make sure the light is filtered since those thin leaves are sensitive. I hope it works out! The potting mix sounds ideal.

I have the worst luck with Oncidiums as it may be the humid hot climate we have but I have bloomed a very small twinkle so a win is a win for me hahahahha!
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 6 месяцев назад
I think you have to go full on bark or just mount them! Everyone in South Florida is horrified when I say I use Moss. 😂 They need their moisture for sure but are so prone to rot!
@emmanuelV37

@NicoleDeanna yeah it's a tricky balance! I may just use bark and see.

In the book, Orchid Whisperer, it's mentioned that oncidiums with yellow flowers are the easiest to grow. It's also mentioned that oncidiums do well in baskets due to their climbing nature.

Since you water thoroughly and you grow in moss, about how long is it between your waterings? As a starting point, knowing this would be helpful for those considering a 50/50 moss/bark mix to keep from drying out too much. Thanks!
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 7 месяцев назад
It depends on the pot. I try to water twice a week, but I skip some pots if they are still moist. The twinkle gets water about 2x a week right now, in the summer it gets watered more. With that said the pot is on the smaller side and there's so many roots in there that it dries faster than if it were in a bigger pot. I hope it helps!

haha same. my first one died, now my second one has given me a total of 3 flowers. It's literally my favorite orchid, I looked high and low to get one and I finally got one, paid almost 40 dollars for a tiny 2 inch plant and it was a total waste cuz it's dead. Luckly the second one was only $7 so I made up for being over charged. And she sent me one with a spike, it's the first orchid I bought green and new that had a flower. UGHHHH I can't wait to get mine like hers I think I'll pass out from the beauty hahaaha

They make a beautiful display of blooms but the fragrance just isn't for me, it is nothing like a Sharry Baby to my nose. Mine has to live outside because I don't want to smell it. The only way I have been able to grow it successfully is on a mount. Semi hydro was a disaster, it didn't do much better in a pot with bark. On a mount, happy as a clam.
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 7 месяцев назад
Makes sense with your humidity. I feel like FL conditions make things very prone to rot so moss is just out of the question, and sh, yeah that didn't even work for me here Lol. I feel like people with the most success with SH flush much more than me, and I have dryer conditions. I like the fragrance, it reminds me a lot of the sharry baby, but it does tend to get grassy later in the day!

I know, people say it's supposed to smell like vanilla or ice cream and something must be wrong with my honker cuz it doesn't smell anything like that to me. Maybe when it blooms a lot I'll be able to get that vanilla smell but this time it was like funky weird orchid smell. Hoping!!!
