COMPACT Kit vs FULL Size Kit: Which Sounds Better?

You’d be surprised how big you can make a compact kit sound. With the effects available to us in Logic, the possibilities are endless. These two kits sound very different to the naked ear, but we can use effects to work to the tiny kit’s strengths. Let’s see what we can do to maximize the sound of a compact kit. Whether or not this video specifically helps you out, I hope you at least find the comparison interesting. If you’re in a predicament like I was at one time where you’re living in a tight space AND gigging in small venues, a compact kit can be great. Knowing how to get the best sounds out of it will also come in handy, and the opportunity to mic it up will make that job even easier. There are lots of “compact kit” options out there these days, and I imagine there are many available that are actually better than this one. Whatever the case, you can most definitely make a small kit work for your needs.

I agree. I'm a fan of Dave's channel as well & he and Steve would do great. Dave does the build, Steve does the test.

I adore the compact kit. It's got such a tight sound reminds me of the Abbey Road drum sound 😍😍😍

I loved my Pearl Rhythm Traveller kit. I played the lugs off of it. I owned it for several years I replaced it with a Sonor Player Kit. I love that kit too. Compact kits are fun to record with. I feel that a compact kit is more versatile that a full sized kit under the mic's. Thanks for the video.

bobdadruma yeah I have one but I’m out growing it buts it’s been good to me but I won’t get rid if it when I buy my new kit bc I’ll probably use the traveler for,busking a,d smaller gigs

a compact kit is also useful for smaller gigs. I play a lot of gigs in restaurants, so I invested in a tama cocktail jam kit. I had some serious reservations when I first got it and jammed it a little, but a change of skins made a world of difference. then when we had it running through a mixer and pa, it sounded almost as good as anything else I play. of course it's not top of the line, but for compactness, portability, and general decent sound, you can't go wrong with a compact kit.

I played a few gigs with a Yamaha Hip Gig kit and the FoH guy had to do some tricks like this to make it work for the venue. I love small kits like this as they're better than they look. "Never judge a book"...and all that. Great video, man! Love your stuff.

I have a Pearl Rhythm Traveler and a Ludwig Rocker and love them both. The Traveler kit is SO handy for gigging.

That actually sounds real good. And as many people say, what is perceived as "studio quality" tone is subjective. I'm sure lots of people record with travel kits. For one thing, in harder music, there's less stuff going on that will just be removed or dampened anyway. For instance, a metal drummer typically wants a popping snare and super fast and tight clicky kick. They're not interested in stadium-filling resonance and sustain. Great vid as always.

One of the joys of drumset are the variety of drums. Make or buy, it's your art. Having spent now 20 years in experiments, I just wanted to say choice is good. Have as many drum kits as possible. Jellybean, or full on "special" kits that do one thing really well. When the drums sound good to you, don't over think it. Play it.

Great video bro! Got a small Tama traveller kit and it works perfectly for certain situations.. Don't wanna miss my Gretsch though. Keep up the great work, you are truly an inspiration!

I really like the way this kit wound up sounding even without processing. Very interesting sound. To me “interesting” is far more desirable than the expected “cookie cutter” drum sounds on modern rock. I’d use the drums in this video in a mix for sure.

I think I'd rather use my v-drums than a set like that. There's more sounds available, even though I only use it as an acoustic sounding set. Plus its already a stereo set. Mines usually on surround sound.

for me personal after 37 years of drumming there are one mail rule and a couple of side-rules. The main rule is: there are no rules! I heart recordings with high end drums with were boring like newspapers. A good sounding acoustic kit is no guarantee for an exiting sound in the mix. My side-rules are about experimenting and the factor coincidence.....like you did with the compact kit. Sometimes in a studio situation crap sounds can work better than golden high end stuff......

For me, the title was misleading. A better title would be "Can you make a compact kit sound like a full size kit with high end software and effects in a studio." I use a small kit (18" kick, 10" rack, 13" floor and 13"x7 snare for certain venues and don't mic them. I've had many compliments from other musicians that were surprised at how big the small kit sounded. I've recorded the band with a Tascam DR-05 positioned about 15-20 feet in front of the stage slightly to the right and the drums projected extremely well. I would be interested to see/hear how the Rhythm Traveler kit fared in a real, live band situation. In reality, you can make any kit sound great with a good sound guy , good mics, and a good PA. I have witnessed it first hand many times.

I'm curious about your decision to pan your OH and room mics all the way hard left and right.

Anyone else notice that the floor tom has a slight increase in pitch at the end of the decay? Or is it just me?

Gosh Stephen I know nothing about miking drums. Do you have a lesson on this? I have never played in a band. When I have jammed with musicians it had just been my raw drums and cymbals. Thanks. Great videos.

I have a suitcase drum set with one headed Tom's and I use remo pinstripe medium tuning with moongel. Do you recommend going to coated heads on Tom's and losing the moongel

Considering that you have to mute the large set, I'd say it's overkill. Properly tuning a medium sized set (18x16, 10x8, 14x12 perhaps) and letting it breathe would be the best.
@helemaalnicks6215
@helemaalnicks6215 6 лет назад
He has to mute the large set because it's cheap, no offense. If he had a high quality kit I doubt he'd mute it. If you let a supercheap kit breathe it's just gonna make "boing" sounds, not what you want.
@jonathanwapner6262
@jonathanwapner6262 6 лет назад
@@helemaalnicks6215 nah man. It comes down to heads, tuning, and hardware. The relative "cheapness" of the wood will effect the flavor of the tone, but you need to work around it. I bet my Ludwig Epic is not up to your corksniffing standard, but I get compliments from the best of'em at shows, studios, audience, whatever. You seem like the type of person that needs a drum dial to tune.
@helemaalnicks6215
@helemaalnicks6215 6 лет назад
I don't know much about Drumkit-names and such, but I google "Ludwig Epic", and this came up: "Snares and bass drums are 8-ply, with birch making up the two outer and inner plies. In between the birch is a 4-ply central section of maple. The toms are six plies thick and are made with a similar sandwich of two outer and inner birch plies framing two middle plies of maple." That doesn't sound bad at all, I don't think this is how the drumkit in the video is made. Again, no offense intended.

I think the only thing that didn't sound good was the distortion, perhaps a little too much as it sounded too clipped for my tastes...

yeah we know which kit would sound better....its the one kit that you personally like & type of genre of music you play...again .......its all subjective....I mean anything goes these days....
