Kyla with Agave Farms teaches us about the Three Sisters Companion Planting technique. The "Three Sisters" are comprised of corn, beans, and squash. Beginning centuries ago, these three crops have been the staples of Native American Iroquois agriculture. The three crops complement each other in the garden and nutritionally as well!
Tall corn stalks provide a natural trellis for the beans to climb to escape the expansive squash vines at ground level. Beans give nitrogen, fertilizing the soil to be absorbed by plant roots. The wide leaves of the squash plants provide shade, helping the soil retain moisture and combating weeds.
In the Phoenix area, Snap Beans can be planted from seed Mid March to End of April. Corn can go in Mid February to Mid April, and squash seeds want to go in the ground Mid February to Mid April. Early April is the sweet spot for planting thee Three Sisters from seed.
Keep this technique in mind for your Spring garden inspiration. You can still do this now if you are able to find transplants for the Three Sisters, otherwise bookmark this idea and try next year!

Did you have any update to this method? a lot of information I am seeing suggests staggering the planting by 1-2 weeks each, (corn, then beans, then squash) to allow for time for the plants to get established. Also, how is centralizing the squash to the end of the bed working out? Again, most of the information I am seeing suggests doing the mounds as separate little modules and just repeating the pattern for the length of the bed. Your video is the first I have seen to suggest doing this as a row system, which would be significantly more convenient in a typical garden plot.

There are three way to plant 3 sisters. The mound method, field method and the rotation method. The mound is if your area receives an abundance amount of rain. You normally plant 3 or 4 seeds of corn and beans and 2 seeds of squash and the field method they are planted in a square with the corn in the center 9 corn with 8 beans ( two beans on each side of the corns) front, back and each side and 1 or 2 on either sides of the beans. The last method is if your area doesn’t receive much rain is rotational method. Each vegetable get planted adjacent to each other and remember corn must always follow beans in rotation, as bean produce natural nitrogen. And the types of corn , green beans and squash should compliment each other not hinder themselves ( like no bush beans). This year I’m planting Montana Cudo corn with Cherokee Trail of tears beans and Lakota squash. On RU-vid there is GRIN.U.Education channel that help me lot with this type of gardening. They can explain in better detail. Best of luck and happy gardening to you.

Corn first, as early as possible!! Then you don't plant the beans too early because they can very easily smother the corn if the corn hasn't been established. Squash can wait until last.
