This mission will be a defensive one, split up into five phases. You have to hold the line against overwhelming forces, but with good micro and planning, it will be a lot easier to manage. It will also introduce the core unit of the Soviet faction: Conscripts. This unit is cheap to reinforce, reliable in groups, and equiped with several abilities that make them useful even in later stages of the game. The most important ability in their arsenal is to merge with other squads to reinforce any losses taken. The conscript model merging will take the offensive stats and weapon of the squad member it replaces, however, their health/defensive stats remain the same. Making this ability ideal in a pinch to preserve veteran/elite units on the frontline, but overall will not fully compensate compared to standard reinforcement. "Oorah!" gives the squad a boost in speed, and (exclusively in the campaign) increases damage/accuracy. Very useful for chasing down a vehicle to lob an anti-tank grenade, rush a fortified position, or to merge with a dying squad. There are more abilities to cover, but I will explain them when they become available to use. Combat engineers are also available midway through the mission and will be typically used to build base structures, setup barbed wire, demolition charges, and most importantly setup mines. They can be upgraded with flamethrowers and (in later missions) minesweepers. Typically it's best to avoid sending this unit into direct combat due to how fragile they are compared to most units at your disposal. The first phase of this mission is rather simple. Send up the two conscript squads you start with and merge with the Shock Troops to reinforce their losses. Immediately move up and eliminate the Grenadier squad (one on each side) as fast as possible. They can launch a rifle grenade that will easily wipe out a healthy squad even in green cover so they should be your priority target in every engagement for this mission. After the Grenadiers are dealt with, the Osstruppen are hardly a threat in comparison and can be held off until the next phase with ease. Be sure to make use of the free conscript call in ability to reinforce any losses to your Shock Troops since any squads lost cannot be replaced! The second phase will commence after the Axis retreat, followed by a Stuka strike. You now have to protect two trucks being loaded with supplies. Fairly straightforward, but noticably more difficult since Grenadiers will start spawning in addition to the Osstruppen. It is imperative that you eliminate them ASAP or at the very least dodge any grenades they manage to get off. If you find yourself being overwhelmed, make use of the smoke grenades to give yourself some breathing room. The AI can't see each other, even when up close, so it can buy vital time to merge conscripts or move your forces around. The third phase takes place in the same area, but now you will be tasked with planting demolition charges on marked locations. You will be given combat engineers for this task, so don't waste time planting those charges once you obtain control of them. To make it easier, throw smoke grenades while they plant to ensure they aren't targeted. Once the charges are set off, retreat your units back to the HQ for the next wave. The fourth phase requires that you burn down four specific buildings and two haystacks shortly after. If you retreated back to base, there should be two flamethrowers available to pickup which I recommend giving to the engineer units if they're still alive at this point. You should now be able to select the HQ and upgrade it with a field hospital to heal nearby units so be sure to reinforce your Shock Troops whenever possible as well. To target the buildings specifically, and not waste munitions with the ability the game recommends, I suggest using the attack ground key (G) instead. Support your units equiped with the flamethrowers and feel free to plant some mines as well in preparation for the final phase. The fith phase is to simply hold out and defend the HQ at all costs. On top of continuous waves of infantry, you will now have to contend with light vehicles as well. There will be a few minutes of prep time, so plant as many mines as you can along both roads and even a few along the entrance of the base should anything slip by your forces. If you're feeling particularly strategic, you can also use demolition charges in place of mines if your micro is good enough to catch multiple vehicles at once. With good micro and quick reaction timing, this mission should be relatively easy to beat. Enjoy!

Two things the Russians, and in this case the Soviets have always historically done very well with. Mass assault, throwing bodies at the problem and scorched earth. Napoleon especially suffered with the latter.

A flashback mission set before the previous flashback mission. Quaint. This game is not kidding when it comes to having harder-than-hard starting missions. Reminds me of XCOM, but not in a fair way. Conscripts. Always so expendable, ever since the Command and Conquer days. May the unholiness of scorched earth tactics ever be used again, even in the northlands nowadays.
