July 1944 Lublin, Poland
Hitler and Stalin had invaded Poland as allies in 1939, but live years later their armies clashed on many of the same battlefields. By July of 1944, the Red Army had retaken the Ukraine and Belarus, and their next offensive aimed to push the Wehrmacht out of eastern Poland. The city of Lublin was a vital target on the path to Warsaw«it served as a headquarters for Nazi operations in Poland. Thousands of Polish civilians lived and died at the whim of Nazi commandants. On the fringe of the city, a larger camp hid the greatest horrors of World War II. Isakovich was sent to report on the battle at Lublin and the atrocities at Majdanek.
“It is the writer’s duty to tell the terrible truth, and it is a reader’s civic duty to learn this truth. To turn away, to close one’s eyes and walk past is to insult the memory of those who have perished."
- Vasily Grossman, Soviet War Correspondent
