Hi. I was in the original cast in the vocal minority and as Pam's understudy. The lady in the photo is Alice Cannon. Alice was the understudy for the role of Susan. Because Susan was injured Alice did all her parts in the company numbers. Susan only did Barcelona and You Could Drive a Person Crazy

@@marilynsaunders1026 ,what happened to Susan with respect to the accident ? And what was the cause of her passing ? I have always loved Barcelona on the 1970 lp and bought my first copy back in August, 1970. The documentary part with her and Dean Jones recording it lifts my spirit every time I watch it and I have shared it with family and friends. My facebook page has a column on it, along with another item- dated 1-24-2019, tomorrow, that I write for the South China, Maine, Town Line weekly. She exuded poise, dignity, kindness and grace; her voice in it was beyond beautiful !!! Thank you and all the best, Peter Cates !

Company is my all-time favorite musical. I saw the original production about as many times as Joanne was married and loved it the first time I saw it and ever since. I also saw it in LA the summer of 71 with a few original cast members in it (Stritch, Howland, Myers & Ralston) and I've seen every Broadway revival (except the current one that got closed down with the pandemic). I've seen a host of off-Broadway and non-professional productions and the 2011 NY Philharmonic semi-staged production. And, of course I saw this 23rd Anniversary concert (as it was billed at the time) twice. They did three performances over one weekend (April 11 & 12, 1993). I saw the two Saturday performances. To this day I don't think there was any subsequent performance I saw in which a performer was better than the one in the original cast. So, I was in heaven seeing the original cast again after so many years. Amazingly, most of the cast was as good as they were 23 years earlier. I fell in love with Patti LuPone when I first saw her as Lady Teazle in A School for Scandel several years before her breakthrough in Evita, but even she must bow to Elaine Stritch, the absolute definitive Joanne (she sort of did so after singing Ladies Who Lunch at a Philharmonic Sondheim concert a few years before the Philharmonic Company concert). Pamela Myers, who owns Another Hundred Days, may have outdone herself in this concert - I simply cannot imagine it ever done better. Beth Howland's rendition of (Not) Getting Married Today was perhaps a tad less coherent here than originally, but still awe inspiring. At this point I have to say I first saw Company a short time after Dean Jones had left the cast and loved Larry Kert as Bobby. So this concert was my first chance to see Dean Jones do the role. I was more impressed than I expected. The fact is I always felt Kert was probably better in the role because he had a better singing voice than Dean Jones (after all he was a musical theater professional who had created the role of Tony in West Side Story, while Jones was a visitor from the world of Disney movies). Some say Jones acted the role better, though I found Kert compelling, especially in the scene with Stritch's Joanne toward the end when she asks him something like when are we going to make it and they just stare at each other in silence until he gets up to sing the emotionally draining Being Alive. I just can't imagine it done better, but as most of the Book was jettisoned for this concert so I cannot really make any comparisons. There is also a bootleg video of the Long Beach, California concert that preceded this one by a month (according to a prior post here), which unfortunately, is not on You Tube. Good as that performance is (I've seen the video), this one is better. Performers often say that their performance can be affected by the audience. I think that was the case here. Perhaps I'm being a New York snob here, but sitting in the audience I just felt most people in there were long time Company lovers like me, and like me I expect many had seen the original Broadway production several times. Our reaction to the songs was so overwhelming that I suspect it just fed the cast's desire to give it their all. It was like a love fest. I often write notes on performances I see and in April 1993 I wrote this about this concert: "The electricity for both performances I saw could have lit up the City and when George Furth, Harold Prince and Stephen Sondheim came out to take their bows the theater was filled with excitement, love and warmth." Thanks for posting this and Happy 91st to the GREAT Stephen Sondheim without whom we would not have this masterpiece which has given me (and lots of other people) so much joy for over 50 years.

You make a lot of Jones being just a mere visiting “Disney actor,” but if you look at his filmography you’ll see that he appeared in a wide range of film and television roles for ten years before his first appearance in a Disney productions in 1965, just five years before landing the lead in “Company.” He was already a veteran stage actor, and his Broadway debut occurred ten full years before his appearance in “Company.” His lead role in “Company” was his part to keep, but apparently he was falling apart personally and in the midst of a divorce, so he asked to leave the show. Hal Prince apparently saw him as a valuable enough of a property that he granted Jones’s request so long as he opened the show and sang on the cast album, which was recorded within a week of the show’s opening.
@leslieepstein4700
@leslieepstein4700 2 года назад
I do not think I maKe "a lot" of Dean Jones being a "Disney actor". I did mention, in passing and rather flippantly, as part of a parenthetical statement, that "Jones was a visitor from the world of Disney movies". I did not mean to denigrate Jones by this and I did say I was impressed by his performance. I made clear I preferred Kert mostly because I felt he had a better singing voice. While Jones did have stage experience, as far as I know this was his first musical, certainly on Broadway where he had only appeared in one straight play previously, while Kert, besides creating the role of Tony in "West Side Story", had appeared in at least a half dozen Broadway musicals before "Company", making him a "musical theater professional" as I put it. What cannot be denied is, while Jones appeared in numerous other movies and TV shows, his greatest fame was in those Disney movies. It's probably in the first sentence of all the obits written about him, and in 1970 when "Company" premiered he was at the height of that fame. I am speculating here, but is it possible that Hal Prince found him valuable partly because he needed a big name movie star to get the financial backing he needed to mount the show? After all, back in 1970 Stephen Sondheim had a mixed record as a Broadway composer, one success, "A Funny Thing...", and one flop "Anyone Can Whistle". Then there's the fact that Larry Kert was nominated for a Tony for his performance in "Company" and Jones was not. As far as I know that was the only time a replacement member of the cast in an original production was nominated for a Tony. @@inkyguy

@@walterwhite4862 i always wondered why theatre seemed to be so tight when releasing their recordings. Theatre already is a medium that is usually not very accessible, even more so since its not like films where you can rewatch it again and again on a number of platforms. When a show closes, unless someone posts a bootleg, that's it. What's the problem with making these recordings more accessible to the masses?

Nice to see George Coe (RIP); he was the man who introduced me to Mr' Sondheim, at the opening night party for the "Into the Woods" premiere in San Diego. Sondheim was so gracious and amiable to me, listened kindly to my stuttering praise, then turned on a dime, went back to his personal guests, and that was it. Am so glad I found this video. I did not know anything about Company until I saw a documentary on PBS about the making of its soundtrack by DA Pennebaker. I was so impressed that I bought the album. Years later the documentary came out again, narrated by Company's producer, Hal Prince and the incomparable Elaine Stritch. It wasn't until then that I learned why Dean Jones left the show right after the opening. According to Hal, Dean's marriage was falling apart, he hated NYC and needed to get out of his contract to get his personal life in order. I could tell in the documentary that something was wrong. He was irritable, distracted and unfocused. Hal said he had no idea what was wrong until he talked to Dean. Afterwards, he told Dean he could leave after the opening, in which he was replaced by Larry Kert. As great as Larry was in the part of "Bobby", it is a shame that Dean had to leave the cast, for he more than likely would have won a Tony. The part of "Bobby" was made for him. This video proves that. Anyway, I want to pay tribute to members of the original "Company" who are no longer with us (there are probably more that I am not aware of): George Furth (playwright), Hal Prince (Producer and Director), Michael Bennett (choreographer), Elaine Stritch ("Joanne"), Susan Browning ("April"), Dean Jones ("Bobby"), and Beth Howland ("Amy"). RIP.

I saw this close to the end of the Boston tryout. The running order of the songs at that time was the same as in this recording, but as I recall the Playbill listed them differently. "The Ladies who Lunch" was titled "Drinking Song," and I believe that the duo of "What Would I Do..." and "Side by Side by Side" occupied its place just before "Being Alive." That must have been the order of the songs at the start of the tryout.;

What a shame that Mr. Jones left the show shortly after it opened. He would have assuredly won the Tony Award. By the way , if Mr. Jones had stayed with the show, and if the original Broadway production cast had gotten half of this adulation from the audiences , the show would have run for five years.

We had included Tick Tock, and our dancer was wonderful, and I have a photo of George breaking the news to her that it shouldn't be included. It was only there because of Donna McKechnie and then Charlotte D'Amboise. Personally, I've very glad we didn't know that. re the bizarre comment below claiming dean jones left the show before it arrived in new york due to vocal problems: pure falsehood. dean jones left the cast because he was going through a deeply painful divorce. his agreement with hal prince allowed him out of his contract if he would open the show and record the cast album -- larry kert was already engaged to replace him. jones performed opening night at the alvin theater on broadway april 26, 1970 through may 28, 1970. this history has all been well-known from the time it happened; there has never been an alternative narrative. why people make up this kind of rubbish about departed artists is a mystery that does not fascinate. jones was the first choice of sondheim and prince -- they were sorry to lose him -- in no small part because of his amazing, unstoppable, singing voice.
