In this video, I compare standard freewheel size (1.37x24 TPI or 1.375 inch [1 3/8 inch] diameter with 24 Threads Per Inch) with the smaller M30 freewheel size, using a BMX-style flip-flop hub, which has 1.375x24 TPI threading on one side and M30 threading on the other side (also written as Metric 30 x 1mm). Standard size freewheels come in 16t and larger (17t, 18t, etc.). The smaller M30 size freewheels only come in 13t, 14t, and 15t. I've heard of 12t freewheels, but the only ones I've seen are junk. If anyone knows of a good quality 12t freewheel with M30 threading, please let me know.
I mention in the video, there are other styles of flip-flop hubs, most notably a fixed-gear or fixie style flip-flop hub, which has a different purpose. If you want to see what they look like or how they are used, just search 'fixie flip-flop hub' and you will see they take a fixed gear cog on the big size, which is held on by a lock ring.
*Note regarding the grease I put on the hub threads - I only put a little on for this video. If I was actually installing the freewheel for use, I would use a lot more grease. Those freewheels can be very difficult to remove if they get seized on the threads.
The previous video that I mention several times in this video can be found here: • Comparing 13t BMX Free...

Thank you very much! The most informative explanation about freewheels I've ever seen. I have a 13 tooth on my sunday high c and didn't know what M-30 was. Thanks again.

Rad! Thanks for the feedback! That hub is just like the Fairdale, probably made by the same manufacturer because Sunday and Fairdale are both under Full Factory. My 13t DNP died after two years (very recently). I could not find any high quality 14t freewheels, but I found out that Ride Out Supply and Origin8 Hornet makes higher quality 15t freewheels, which is what I'm using now - so I had to install a bigger 33t sprocket so the gearing would stay the same. Cheers!

I've never seen those Halo covers before and will definitely check them out! Great video explaining freewheel sizes and the tools you need to work on them.

I wish they made them in M30 size too, but they don't. Strange!

The more teeth on the cog, the harder it is to pedal from a standstill? But higher top end? I have a flip flop hub on my Redline PL26 and was hoping to have more top end by switching to something else. Any recommendations?

The bigger the chainring/sprocket up front, the harder to pedal/ more speed you get. The back is reverse - the smaller the freewheel/cog in the back, the harder to pedal but faster you can go.

Good explanation video wired fairdale went with that one size only

I'm just guessing they got the hubs really cheap from some overseas manufacturer, but they've been using that style rear hub for years on the Taj model. Some companies make a rear hub that allows for a changeable cog (with a lock ring), and I personally think that's how all BMX hubs should be, so you can change out the size cog you want quickly, easily, and super cheap. Someday I'm going to build a really nice wheelset, and that's the style hub I'll use.

Oh and Sunday uses that same style hub on some of their bikes too, like the High C. It has just M30 threading on one side.
@mozezcen-valley7555
@mozezcen-valley7555 2 года назад
@@TuesdaysTurn well Sunday is also made with the same company of fairdale and another brand as well there's like three companies together or more but what I want is an eight tooth free will... Basically those new ones that are on the BMX bikes 20-in models eventually I'll get a hub and lace up the original rim set... But I want to get one that is coaster break Free Will if that makes sense basically so when the bike goes backwards the pedals don't move backwards as well only when you pedal forward and no not the coaster brakes like the old beach cruisers that break when you go backwards the new ones

@@mozezcen-valley7555 yep, a freecoaster hub. Odyssey makes one called Clutch V2 with a 9t driver. Not cheap!

I like the Excess 14t. And if you can go 15t, Ride Out Supply has an excellent one.

Can you replace individual cogs? I want to change my smallest cog on my 7 speed Freewheel.
@TuesdaysTurn
@TuesdaysTurn Год назад
This is a BMX style freewheel, so you cannot replace anything easily (too cheap, not worth it). On a cassette style freewheel, you should be able to replace any of the smaller cogs. You need a chain whip and cog lock tool (many different kinds, so you need to know which kind your hub accepts). Unlock the lock ring, and take cogs off. Very simple if you have the right tools.

thanks for detail video =) got tri diamond 16t freewheel that screws only when it’s upside down :-/
@TuesdaysTurn
@TuesdaysTurn 2 года назад
Sorry to say, but in my experience those are complete junk. FRAMED uses them on their cheap bikes, and they're almost impossible to remove. You have to disassemble the freewheel to un-thread it.

Can you screw in the m30 free wheel backwards
@TuesdaysTurn

Some track cogs thread on backwards, but those are completely different than a BMX style freewheel. These freewheels only thread on clockwise.

@@chrismagallanes8858 Sorry, I'm not following you. There are more than one kind of flip-flop hubs. Do you have a BMX style flip-flop hub? If so, you can install a smaller freewheel on one side, or a bigger one on the other. You could have one on each side, but I never see people riding like that.
@chrismagallanes8858

@@TuesdaysTurn so i have to make my bmx bike electric but still keep the pedals. So if i installed the flipflop hub a regular size freewheel on the pedal size i want to quickly switch to the electric motor with a small sprocket. But i want to install it backwards so that if i turn on the esc it will move forward.
@TuesdaysTurn

@@chrismagallanes8858 I'm really sorry, but I don't know anything about e-bikes and how their hubs work. I would just guess, completely guessing, a flip-flop hub would not work with an e-bike because of those the motor needs to work with the chain and hub.
