It would’ve been really nice to hear a little bit about the silver ceramic one. There was nothing at all said about that one. It would be nice to hear about maintenance and anticipated working life of each of these as well. At a time when everything is pricier, and some things are just not possible to get, such as in the pandemic which we’re not quite through yet, stores have been shut down, in particular stores that did not sell food. Getting filters would’ve been a problem for anybody who had a disposable filter, or one that could not be simply painted and pressed back into service. Sir, would you do another video, speaking about the proper maintenance and Working life of each of these filters, please?
Thank You, finally, someone who knows what he talking about. I have more than several of the 'first need xl(e,, because the sport shop where I bought several of these was mistaken about the efficiency of the ceramic filter, saying that also removed viruses. Thanks Rich for setting me on the right track. Very informative.
Hello thank you for the video I didn't know you had a RU-vid channel. I've been ordering your products for a couple years now and I'm very happy. I also gave one kit as a gift for someone who lives in the hurricane area.
Love ! Love ! Love ! my Doulton ceramic countertop water filter ! Easy to use. Easy to clean. We get brown water here in Ithaca, NY whenever our water supply runs lowish in the hot summer months (feed by a stream from the surrounding mountains)---manganese is the issue I believe. Doulton takes care of it! Lovely, clear water with no fuss.
Sadly, there isn't a state in the US with water that passes as fit for human consumption by international standards with lead being the biggest culprit. The EPA, supposedly independent, spends a lot of money lobbying to prevent tightening of rules, which the last administration did. For the record, I am non political and don't even live in the US, I just keep my finger on the pulse with certain issues.
Wow, you guys have really put a lot of thought into your products. Definitely very impressed, even if i might not immediately purchase your larger models. I did get a D-Stil Lite just now, so depending how that works out, i might also get the GRAVI-Stil. I used to own one of those electric distillers from Amazon, but after three years the electric switch burned out. Obviously, that's not very sustainable, even if I did manage to repair it. The multiple heat source aspect of your products appeal to me.
Just looking at all of these, something came to mind. I would think the dome would be better and last longer than the candle style, because the whole thing sits lower in the water. A candle is going to clog more toward the bottom and less toward the top as the water drains out, so the lower and wider the better. Yes, no?
The candle has more filtering surface than the dome, so I would assume the dome clogs quicker, ergo requires cleaning more often, however, the dome is a better fit for smaller, maybe wider, containers.
I'm currently using the dome shape and 16qt stainless steel pots purchased at my local Walmart and a stainless steel spigot purchased online too as well as my filters.
Interesting about the Black Berkey candles. They say their pore size is so small they'll trap viruses and also there is a lot of hype about the Berkeys (and sky high prices). I use Doulton candles in a stoneware water filter with tank water and had no problems.
2 questions Do you have anything to filter out fluoride? And I want to get away from using plastic. Do you offer any glass or stainless steel container systems?
I'm wanting to clean a dedicated gray water tank to a shower (off grid) the goal is clean water recirculating to be refill the water supply tank. 99% time using bio- degradable soap,, but concerned about a build up of soap scum. Or if the filter could even handle the soap without instantly clogging up. Best thought process right now is use aquarium floss/quilt batting on shower floor with a teak slat floor over it to capture as much soap/hair first.
I use your ceramic - silver - charcoal dome With a 2.5 GLASS bottom tank for tap water, The glass bottom tank was a Zero Water tank which I found not to be cost effective (cost per gallon $$$$$$$$$$$$)
I'm looking for something that filters out fluoride. Aside from Berkey, AquaGear was the only one claiming to filter fluoride when I did my initial search years ago, and AquaGear has recently discontinued that feature. Making my own filter system appeals to me, so I'd like to know if there is a filter you recommend?
I'm also interested in removing fluoride. My little research has led me to find that add on filters ie for berkey or doulton etc that remove fluoride do so using a media that contains or utilises aluminium. So yes removes or reduces fluoride but at the cost of aluminium (not good). It seems to be kept quiet by berkey etc... and not immediately obvious to someone wanting a flouride removal filter. doulton don't even mention what the fluoride removing media is inside there fluoride filter but likely aluminium. I have heard that a possible natural solution is Tulsi plant or holy basil leaves as they apparently leach the fluoride out of water. If the filtered water was able to have these leaves soaking in it for a certain time it may help to naturally remove or lower the fluoride. Would need to test properly to confirm
Impressive video! Thanks for going through them all. I’m already going berkey for drinking but what would you recommend for showers and washing clothes during SHTF
Bathing can be done in regular hose water. Cooking water ideally should be filtered as if you'd be drinking it, but if you can't get it that clean. Clothes washing should be the last thing you use any water for if water is in short supply. Honestly, having done long distance hiking(7+ nights, 100+ miles), I bring 1 change of undies and a spare shirt on most hikes. I'd rather pack more food than clothing. If I'm hiking near a lake or stream, I'll bring a vinyl "soft bucket" with me for washing clothes with. NEVER wash your clothes in a body of water with antibacterial soap. Take a bucket of water out of the lake/stream/river and wash on ground. Don't contaminate the stream with soap runoff. It will kill the good bacteria that helps maintain the ecosystem :-)
Living in what sounds like colder climes to you, Scotland, I always wear Merino as a base layer, which, of itself, has antibacterial properties, but it's a Merino mix, ensuring further antibacterial benefits, so they require washing every four or five days, which saves time and effort, but, as you say, sooner water for drinking and cooking than than laundry concerns.
@@billyandrew do I understand you wear merino wool next to your skin? I live in sub tropics, so I am clueless. It gets just below freezing about maybe 7 to ten days a year here, if that. Is it scratchy? Do you have a softener to wash it with?
@@beverlyaten1775 If the merino fine wool garment is SOFT enough, it’s beautiful next to yr skin! To test, gently place the fabric up against your décolletage and move it around...discreetly, tho, or the store owner will think yr creepy. You can tell if the wool is soft or scratchy. Aim for “machine washable “ on the lable. Wash in the machine in a lingerie bag, to avoid twisting and wrecking it in the wash....cold wash, with normal powder. Yahoo!! Now you’re set! Marian, The filter will turn the color of what ever is in the water being removed. Example: High iron in the water will turn it red. You can take a scrub pad or sand paper to rough up and clean the outside of the filter. Remember the outside doesn't need to look clean for that is where all the things you don't want in your water get caught. They do not pass through the filter to the clean water side. Any questions just call our shop M-F 9-6pm Central time. 612-888-7483
Brother, Awesome video! So the last filter was the only one that kills viruses and bacteria? Can you give me a part number can I set this up with a Hand pump for pressure? Best Regards!
My hollow fibre uf membrane claims to be of pore size 0.01 and works with tap pressure. It does not need any pump, though it takes 10 minutes to produce a gallon of water. Do I need a uv sterilization in my case?
Interesting set up. I was wondering the uv light compartments. Do they have water or air tight locking mechanisms to avoid air contamination or spillage while moving the container?
Can one of your UVs be added to a Berkey (the plastic see through type of Berkey.) If not, can you recommend a submersible UV for a 2 1/2 gallon clear plastic Berkey?
@@rharrold I'd recommend as high up in the bottom (clean water container) as possible. The gasket seals well, but there's always a chance of a leak. If it's up high, water doesn't have as much pressure.
I live in Northern CA -- I'm concerned especially with chlorine, uranium, arsnic, and flouride (sp?). Would most appreciate a recommendation for an effective filter. Thanks for the information!
@@RTFManuelUranium? Actually, yes. You can go to the publicly reported water reports for South Lake Tahoe, CA -- they will list the contaminants of the various water wells. Uranium is a big one.. Also, check out the contaminant filter capability of the Berkey filters. There's a reason Uranium is being filtered.
How much pressure do I need for the last one? I'm trying to figure out if I can fabricobble together a new system and I want a hand pump on that sucker either way, still would like the best if I can make it work
I have been researching for days... Are the aftermarket carbon and flouride filters as good as the berkey? Also for river or lake water? I will pay more if it makes a difference but black Berkey filters they are almost triple the price. Thank you!
No, this is a great question. The black carbon slightly reduces fluoride, but not alone they don't do much. The only 2 compounds that will filter out fluoride are Activated alumina and Bone char carbon. We have these compounds in our CT 4.0 counter top water filter. The other way is distilling water.
are these as good as berkey, and will they remove any pool shock/chlorine from the water? YZMMWST Replacement for Berkey Water Filter System, Black Purification Elements Gravity Filter System, for Doulton Super Sterasyl and Traveler, Nomad, King, Big Series - 2 Pack
As far as I know there are no waterborne viruses in North American rivers/lakes or ground water that you'd need to worry about. Not sure what the point of the UV light is unless you're filtering actual sewage.
@@retiredchef238 Our filters are impregnated with silver particles and silver ions make them Bacteriostatic to inhibit bacteria growth but also has shown to inhibit viral activity.
What do you think about using a bike air pump, 1-3 psi. for pressurizing the bucket, instead of any Electric fish air pump or any other electrical anything. Off grid or power down, don't you think a mechanical way would be better?..Shrader valve- same on car tires. threaded into top lid...As the water goes down, you will loose some pressure, so just give it a couple more pumps of air..done..
the problem with using air pressure is this: once more than one third of the filter is exposed the air passes through the filter faster than the water. all that air passing through the carbon filter dries the crud . making it more difficult to clean off. Killed a new set of Berkeys, in just 20 gallons of water!! in an emergency situation. using air to push dirty pond water through a new set of berkey filters
I have a British Berkefeld water system that will only take a 7" filter. I want to filter out lead, and I guess the black filters do this, while the white ceramic filters do not. Most Berkey black filters are 9" tall -- too tall for my system. Do you know of any black ceramic filter that is only 7" tall? Thank you!
OK SO a White filter for example will remove flouride and a black filter will remove for example bacteria and purify the water. So , If you have a system of 2 white and 2 black filters how do you get all the flouride out? Reason I am asking is berkey says white for flouride and black for purify? That does not make sense to me at all.
I just bought a Berkey system a few months ago and hate it. I purged it as per instructions, and ran at least 10 gallons of tap water through it.... the taste is worse than the tap. It has almost an oily smell and taste. I even ran 1 gallon of vinegar through it, with slight improvement. Since I already have the housing, I think I want to switch out the filters to yours, can you confirm that your filters will not have this same problem?
You'll need a reverse osmosis filter. It won't remove it all, but should take care of about 95%. Rinse the filter out, then bung the already filtered water through again.
Yes. We all use th same filtering technology. .2 micron ceramic filters with active carbon, other than our gravitywell ultra UVC uses UV lamp to handle virus. No ceramic filters address the smallest virus, but the UV lamp does.
I distilled 4 gallons of water from the garden hose, the water is 000 on the TDS Meter but the water taste like the garden hose on a hot day, what would be the best filter to take the bad taste out? I would like to make my own Berkey system that will fix the bad taste.
Any of our filters with activated carbon should do the trick. Here's a link to one of our carbon black candles. www.shtfandgo.com/product/carbon-black-ceramic-7-inch-candle-filter/
As long as the pool is not a salt water pool. Yes you can drink pool water. Most chlorine will be absorbed by the carbon in the filter, but It is best to let the water stand for a day or two, since chlorine dissipates on its own, and then filter.
The light comes with our water filter system. We normally don't sell it separately, but if you contact our shop we can figure it out. We're there M-F 9-6 CST 612-888-7583
Do candle filter remove harmfull elements like lead iron mercury chlorine from tap water, mt tap water is highly contaminated what you suggest me to use? Ceramic ok?
I bought a ProOne 9inch filter (well, bought 2 but one came cracked so got a refund on the crack one). I took out all my berkey filters in my berkey (had my berkey for 11 years) and watched everything up, scrubbed down new filter as directions say. Then I put filtered gallons of bottled water in the top reading 6ppm on my TDS meter, and when the water goes through the ProOne Filter and in the bottom it first read 286ppm. I did this 4 times (waste of water), washed everything up to get all the sediments in, and put through 2 more gallons for the 5th time. Again, the read is 6ppm (wegmans filtered water using) and shockingly after all this time and effort, the water comping out is at 186ppm. Now what the heck is this filter leeching into my water to increase the ppm from 6 to 186? My berkey filters would be 6ppm to 5 or 6ppm after it went through, but.. this filter adds another 180ppm to the water so i am scared to drink it since i think what could be happening is the filter has all types of stuff in it that is disolving and getting into the drinking portion of the water. Is this perhaps why the are not NSF certified for the filter filtering out what the claim it filters out? Instead the only NSF certification is for just the parts and materials, not for how the filter actually works. I emailed the company so waiting for a response and I so hope they don't tell me the Filter adds stuff to the water that is beneficial since what goes into the filter should come out the same or better, NOT worse! I think these filters are all marketing BS and don't actually do what they claim they do, which is why they are NOT certified. The tests only go up to 200 gallons, but yet the 9 inch filter is rated for 1200 gallons (why not test to 1200 gallons?). I am so aggravated after reading all about the berkey short-commings and just seeing other companies appear to be following the same formula and just collecting money. I do have an RKIN over the counter R/O filter, but like the gravity filter for our dogs/coffee/and to drink more spring water versus just the R/O water, but i won't even give this ProOne filtered water to my dogs since who knows what is leeching out that ceramic filter and being injected into the drinking water. I don't think I trust any of these products as they lack certifications and most of the reviews do not do real testing of the water before going in and after coming out!! Why???
Sorry for the long delay. for some reason your message didn't show up until now. They advertise them as .2 micron, but I've not tested them for consistency.
What works on pharmaceuticals? With so many people on drugs for hormones and prosaic type meds, I want to eliminate that from my families drinking water. What micron size works on filtering that out?
I bought a British Berkefeld for y2k (2000) and never used.( in basement) Can I use. What candle filters should I use to filter even virus contaminants? Please answer. Thank you.
Unfortunately, there aren't any ceramic filters including Berkey, doulton and many others that handle virus. That's why, for virus, we use UV sterilization.
I use my ceramic filter the dome one for about 3 weeks then it stop filtering, I scrub it with a brush, a pot scrubber, sand paper and its still not working, i think its because the holes in the ceramic is so small it is clogged and cannot be unclogged. Do you have any suggestion that can help?
Contact our shop on Monday and we can help you trouble shoot. If the brush or scrub pad had any oil on it you probably ruined the filter. Soap and oil can plug up pores. Sand paper or clean brillo pad are best. We've used dome filters for over a year with no problems.
