I like this view of both, especially the same size biscuit and Domino. Have a play with the width and length of Domino. The snug fit on the Domino would hold your frame together no problem without glue. I always use a snug fit on one side and the middle setting on the other. This allows for a small amount of alignment play when gluing up. When I looked at both, I found biscuits great for alignment and Domino's great for alignment and strength. I know it's not comparing apples, but 140mm Domino's are now my go to for breadboards on tables.
I think at the end of the day everybody chops a hinge differently. Its about you making a good job for an end result. DIyist for istance isnt in a rush to finish the job Where as a pro doing it for a living. We both achieve the same result in the end. Like yourself ive been a chippie for 40yrs. Sometimes i feel like a few more pencil lines and marking out is better than shelling the bucks out. Its a hard topic to sort out,great debate and video

There is a third alternative- as used by almost every commercial maker of sheet material furniture. The dowel. Why is this not used by more hobbyists? because placement of the dowel is crucial. They have to line up very accurately. No problem for commercial makers- they are using CNC. The key feature of the Domino is that it is a slack fit along the joint. This means that using hand marked placement is adequate. There are many jigs on the market supposedly to allow dowels to be placed accurately, but these suffer from a number of issues. Sad, because it is not that hard. It can be made for a few pounds, saving a large sum. The savings do not stop there- dominos are not cheap, and the price of a single cutter can buy you the electric drill... The resultant joint will be just as strong and actually more accurate (the slop means that you have to align the ends by hand, or switch to a tight fit for one of the dominos, and use an end jig to place it. Just like a dowel...) Many decry the use of a jig, mainly because most commercial ones are a bit clumsy- they try to make them fancy to justify the price. A simple one works well, and takes no longer than using a domino- the holes take a few seconds longer, but there is no marking out. And that means no marking out errors... Biscuits are designed for edge jointing- they have the advantage of allowing differential movement due to swelling/ shrinking over time. They are not really designed for end jointing. Your frames would probably have stayed together with dowels!
Hi Mike. You are right you do not see so much dowelling. The only time I have used them in my small shop is when I drill through both parts and peg them. I did used to CNC them into items years ago when I was shopfitting. Just done a workshop job using the cheapest blue Amazon dowel maker- lots of tubers swear by it …. I just swore using it. Difficult to clamp down. The bushings are sloppy so the dowels are all over the place and so difficult to get accurate registration of both sides added to which it’s a dowel at a time then move the jig! I can see how the expensive pro jigs can save time . Plus there are so many doweling jig options.. not forgetting the kreg beadlock system the woodpecker dowel jig to make mortise slots for domino’s, the duo-dowel machine and of course the domino itself. My last box making course was done in a production shop and their large old mortising machine was unused in a corner because the domino was so versatile….
@@GrumpaLoz Yes, commercial dowel jigs leave a lot to be desired. That is why I designed the one referred to above. Small, but does joints up to ~700mm, and low cost. My son is currently using it to scratch build his kitchen... Joint locking systems- I also designed such a system for 3D printer owners- including an alignment jig. A domino offers structural strength whereas a biscuit doesn’t. Oh and you absolutely can use a domino to create a slot. Done it many times. I also think there a is a big case for accuracy even seeing the thickness of the marks on your biscuit cutter shows it’s not accurate. I think you’ve really misunderstood what a domino is. Would you make a gate with biscuits?
Hi Stuart. Thanks for your view and comments. As I said at the beginning of the video I made this video in the context of joining panels to make the two units, the Domino can do loads more. I come from a world of hand cutting mortice and tenons so using the domino still feels like cheating. Regards JP
Well, what an interesting comparison video, thanks for taking the time to share the run through.. no experience in either, but am I right in thinking the biscuit is primarily for aligning board edges on glue ups from a reference face (or ends on boxes) and any strength is from the glue - as the biscuit grain is longwise and would sheer whereas the domino can be used in tenon like applications in using bicker loose tenons for actual joinery…?
Hi Grumpa, hope your well. Biscuits are made with a diagonal cross grain to ensure that the do not break across the glue line. Like domino usually beech. Regards JP
