The clash of titans is on! When WatchBox received both a white gold Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre a Chronographe and platinum A. Lange & Sohne Datograph, a comparison was inevitable. Although each of these watches received its own spotlight video, a side-by-side comparison illuminates the key differentiators between these champions of Swiss and Saxon high horology. Which one will be the watch YOU want?
A. Lange & Sohne Datograph:
There are luxury watches that come, go, and vanish from the collective imagination of the enthusiast community. And then there are models like the A. Lange & Sohne Datograph, a seismic Saxon shockwave that rocked Swiss haute horlogerie to its core and captivated a world of collectors.
The 1999 launch of the Datograph was a moment that redefined the watch industry on manifold levels. East German watchmaking, long considered a "feel good" story of plucky underdogs and capitalist resilience, suddenly vaulted to eye-level with Geneva's elite. Lange, then something of a well-kept connoisseur's secret, exploded into the mainstream consciousness.
Naturally, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin were sent scrambling to rethink their vaunted standards of fit, finish, and detail. Yes, the first Lange Datograph was that good.
And it remains that good sixteen years after blitzing Basel. The 39mm platinum case and black dial remain as striking today as they did in the Millennium Bug era. Each studied flourish from the contrast of the polished and brushed facets to the immaculate polished lugs scintillates while enticing admirers to look even closer.
"Legendary" is a platitude; almost all superlatives follow suit. This watch, the original A. Lange & Sohne Datograph, is a watch that changed the language of Francophone watch snobs. A luxury watch as special as this one deserves its own suite of adjectives; its very name should be a synonym for excellence. Perhaps in the future, when revolutionary and game-changing watches emerge, we'll simply call them "Datograph."

Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre a Chronographe:
Darth Vader would approve of this Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre a Chronographe in 18-karat white gold.
The brilliant white case encloses a heart of darkness; this is the only Duometre a Chronographe variant to have been produced with the coveted black dial. And as a limited edition, it's one of only 200 produced.

Both watches are superbly engineered ... and when compared to grossly overpriced Patek Philippe offerings (not that Patek is capable of producing anything along that line), they are as well a great value for money.

This is a clash of titans. As far as brand pedigree and movement creation, no watch brand gets my respect over JLC. All the other companies need help from them to make "the best watches in the world" (didn't you mention in a JLC review that Lange received help with their pano date function from the grand mason?). I also would've bet my paycheck that the Lange didn't have screwed lugs, I guess that's why I shouldn't bet. With all this said, the Lange's black polish and subdails are nothing less than intoxicating. But, JLC did a great job nonetheless with the pattern shining across the gaps in the movement. And, said movement is a beast. It's just a more interesting watch and the brand has integrity. Brands like Patek borrow lemania and JLC base movements and lose all credibility making pilot watches that don't match their heritage, but I digress. Dufour chose the datograph as his favorite, but the JLC has my humble vote. And you own one? Lucky man.

A great "battle"...Love JLC and Lange so it's difficult to choose one. I'd get the Duometre this time. Absolutely beautiful and elegant but at the same time seems futuristic. The movement is superb and the chronograph running is astonishing. Nice one !!

Denis França Hi Denis,I know what you mean about the challenge of choosing! When I'm working with two pieces of this caliber, it's easy to gush about the one in hand at that very moment, and selecting a favorite becomes a real challenge. That's why I try to present them with an even-handed perspective; only the channel surfers can decide which watch is "the one." Best, Tim

Ayztv Hi Ayztv, thanks for the shout-out! I try to show respect for the brands and their collectors by making an effort to get the names right. It always feels awkward to view professional reviews on the major watch channels and hear company (and complication) names almost deliberately mangled. I won't always get them right, but I always try to improve. Best, Tim

Outstanding review with your excellence in watch terminology and vocabulary. Tim, your reviews are amazingly detailed coupled with modern language and phrases, a major talent. I purchased through the Watchbox, The JLC Duometre Lunaire limited edition, my best watch by far, a true masterpiece. Thank you for your comments and recommendations while I was in the process of deciding to purchase the JLC.

Very well reviewed, articulate, informative and appropriately fawning when necessary. The Lange has a style that somehow mirrors my souls aesthetics. They are just a bit thick, but then again, that thickness is additive to the overall sense of quality and craft.

+warriordrum Thank you! I try to stay sincere when showcasing these watches, and in this case, I tried not to sound too biased. I actually own #083 of the Duometre series featured in the video, so I hope I didn't come across as too much of a JLC partisan. The Lange deserves just as much credit. Best, Tim

I always try to give as much background as possible, because the watches mean more to me (and, I'm sure, to RU-vidrs) when the design philosophy, history, and key features receive full attention. We'll have more reviews posted tomorrow morning, so please check back often for more. Best, Tim

Excellent review and you are truly an expert on movements. I applaud the way you can fit so much detail into such a short video. I'm sorry to say that your German and French pronounciation still needs more work tho. Lange und Soehne, Geneve and Glashuette are all still poorly pronounced. I've heard a lot worse tho. I've lived over ten years in Geneva and my mother tongue is German (Swiss-German) It really isn't that hard to learn this, just get help from someone who actually speaks the language. I apologize if I'm coming across as a snob, as your knowledge on these movements is far greater than mine, you have my utmost respect for the passion you have for these watches. Bravo!

Perry Platinum Hi Perry, thanks for the kind words! I'm very glad that you've enjoyed my videos, and I'll do my best to keep the standard high - especially for exceptional timepieces like these. Yes, my pronunciation needs some work, especially when I'm racing to keep the video to a reasonable length. I learned French in New York 15 years ago, and I work to improve it while living in Miami, so I'm going to be at a disadvantage. That's not an excuse; my intention is to get it right and learn as I can, so please feel free to offer advice any time. Regarding movements, engineering, and watchmaking, I'm self-taught. But the learning continues on that front as well. Ultimately, I'd like to work my way to U.S. CW-21 certification in the watchmaking field. Best, Tim

Just got the RG Dato Up/Down w deployant buckle after many considerations. Thanks for your insights. I will be on the look out for the original Dato. I didn't get why you loved JLC until I saw your video and watched duometre in action.... Its mesmerizing. This finishing reminds me of Lange as you have mentioned many times... I with JLC did this w a MOONPHASE w a steel case dark dial! I am not a big fan of the new moon (looks just wrinkled) but I wish they did the old hilarious looking moon faces from the vintage triple date moon phase watches... That would be awesome

***** Hi Cairo Sodersten, thank for visiting the WuW RU-vid channel! I agree with your take. The Lange is awesome in person, and the flyback function adds dynamism, but the Duometre in action is pure fireworks. As I mentioned in an earlier post on this thread, my love for the Duo is such that I took the plunge and added one (WG Chrono #083) to my small "family." Best, Tim

Hmmm... This is actually nice. Very good aesthetics; I am pleasantly surprised. I am usually accusing Swiss watch industry to be corrupt (ETA movements) and overrated (high caliber brands using ETA movements) and all, but these in this video are good. I mean, the Jeager LeCoultre one, very beautiful. As far as the German company, they would never go wrong, so my highest appreciations there. Still, I'd go for Grand Seiko, instead.
@the1916company

+Andrew Piatek Grand Seiko is excellent, and Seiko Credor is divine. I collect JLC (and own one of the 200 Duometres from this video), but I have tremendous respect for Lange and Seiko. Best, Tim

+watchuwantinc Thanks for the reply, and I know it's impolite to ask, but what price bracket is the Jaeger LeCoultre Duometer? I asked some other RU-vid reviewer, and he said $250,000-$320,000 or something like that for the blue dial Duometre, and I thought it was something along the lines of $10,000. So I was off a bit, unless it's not blue dial featured in this video, but a black dial with funky lighting. Not sure. Anyway, never mind. Maybe I shouldn't be asking about the price, it is rude indeed. But I couldn't help having the price discrepancy I am wandering about here.

@the1916company 9 лет назад
Hi Andrew, that guy gave you bad information unless he's quoting non-US dollars or the price of uncommon tourbillon/sonnerie models of the Duometre. Any of the chronograph, UTT, or Lunaire models should be available between USD 47,000 and 65,000 new or 20,000 to 40,000 pre-owned. Best, Tim
