YAAAAAAAAAS! It's so nice to see Wallace Seymore get a mention. I love, love, love their paints!! They have some really beautiful granulating colours, like their Scala Pink and manganese violet, so pretty! And their Cobalt turquoise light, no exaggeration, is the purest cyan tone I have EVER tried (and I've looked a lot!). It's AMAZING for using as part as a limited CMYK pallete and gives super clean mixes (plus it has pretty granulation)! I really hope you try and share more of their paints!
I love Da Vinci paints. Their Mother Violet also has PB33 in it along with PB15 and PV19. Beautiful granulation and color separation. Another favorite of mine is DV Sea Glass PB15:4. Gorgeous color! ❤️
This is one of my favorite Color Showdowns! I love Manganese Blue, even pale washes make me happy. Being in the US I’m lucky to have DaVinci and Daniel Smith (cough, cough) available at reasonable prices, especially if I’m patient enough to wait for a sale. DaVinci is a terrific brand and worthy of more attention. Sorry it’s so expensive overseas. Daniel Smith is good, but just not as good as DV, imo. It’s the genuine MB they include in their mixture that makes the difference, I suppose. Actually painting with genuine MB is a wonderful experience. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been steered to a handmade paint maker who I just love and he’ll be my primary “Source” for additions to my palette from now on. He picked up a load of new business from being featured and it’s been a positive but it’s also a ton of work for him, so the key is “patience.” Making paint by hand is a commitment of love and I appreciate the maker and the quality, so I can be very patient ☺️. Thanks for this. Looking forward to that dot card! 🤗
I'm super excited to see the tests in the next episode for this color 💙 This is entirely conjecture (I haven't talked to them about it), but my assumption with DVs Manganese Hue including PB15 has always been that they're probably trying to reduce costs and extend the genuine pigment. Regardless, it's such a lovely color!
Another excellent showdown Dr.Oto Kano! W&N Manganese Blue Hue IS the colour of the sunny summer sky here in south central British Columbia so it is the one I have in my palette. Loved seeing this comparative collection. Many thanks for all the colours to which you attend.....but this one is special to me in my little corner of the world.
woah - seeing the paints on black paper makes it so much easier to tell the subtle differences in hue!! I can totally see what you mean by PB33 being like a phthalo blue that leans towards yellow rather than green or turquoise!! i’ve been looking into manganese blue hues made with some version of phthalo because while the phthalos are such good mixers, their intensity and staining properties are just a bit too much for how I paint. i’m hoping that the winsor and newton manganese blue hue will give me some of the mixing properties phthalo blue green shade has, but without the staining or hurting my eyes LOL. thx for doing this comparison!! the genuine manganese blue is beautiful ✨
Thank you for the comparison! I have the one by Wallace Seymour and it’s amazing. I synthesized my own pb33, it is a bit lighter than the commercial thing, but I could get the hue purity. I was wondering, how close pb28 (turquoise variety) by Holbein and Turner are to pb33 in terms of hue?
Wow, now I'm really curious and impressed, so I hope you won't find it terribly annoying that I ask you this: What does it mean that you synthesized your own PB33? 🙂
I have a genuine W&N Manganese blue that I got in the early 90's. But it feels so precious now that it is not available, so I have hardly used it. None of the hues I have tried can match its color , and its granulation is beautiful.
It sucks because being "new" to watercolor just getting into it about 2 years ago.....this color I havent got to play with. It's such a beautiful blue! It's a tropical ocean in a tube, or a awesome blue sky when diluted a little more. To me it's a more useful and stronger cerulean blue.
I have a couple DaVinci 37ml tubes of Manganese Blue dried in the tubes. Do you know what would be the best way to reconstitute them? I do have some ox gall and gum Arabic on hand, but I'd like to get it right on the first try. The paint rattles around inside the tube like a maraca. Any advice would help so I don't ruin what little I have.
I’m about to mull another few pans of PB33 AND my bestie asked for more “cool gray” I made with PB233. I prefer the lighter “hummingbird wing gray” with PB35; Liz prefers the darker gray, both have some interesting, very pretty separation. I also love the. green with quin gold, and honestly, since the first time I mulled this, it became my favorite blue!
Holding a swatch of daniel smiths maganese blue up to my tablet , i see a totally different color. My swatch is much brighter with a tinge more green...hmmmmmm
Given the already contaminated water systems and water tables in the United States (and I imagine elsewhere), I firmly believe we should be using non-toxic art materials. I know people can't do without the cobalts, cadmiums and others like manganese, but I think it is irresponsible to just take you wash water out and throw it in the ground or put it down the sink or tub. I asked an artist on her RU-vid channel how she disposes of her cobalts and cadmiums. She said she just threw it in the ground outside. And that's one of millions of artists around the world doing it at least weekly. I would like to see a video addressing these issues. Artists are by and large environmentalists... except when it comes to their materials and disposal. Do we all just turn the blind eye? Or do we stop calling ourselves environmentalists?
