As someone who just doesn't have the budget to get a full airbrush setup, videos like this have become invaluable to be. Rattle cans are my go-to and it's nice that there are still _some_ decent options out there.

My personal take over 60+ years of modeling is; Tamiya and 91% Walmart rubbing alcohol. Either that or Tamiya's lacquer thinner. It will stick where Vallejo rarely does. It sprays EXTREMELY well through a Badger Renegade Velocity or a Harder & Sreenbeck Infinity. Hard to go wrong with Tamiya paint. There's a reason they are the premier modeling company. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel. You have a great deal of expertise that can benefit all of us in the modeling community.

Tamiya is definitely one of the best performing paints out there. Goes on great every time using different thinners. It really can't be beat. I do love Tamiya as a company over all. I have about 75 of their kits and tons of their tools. One of the great brands

2:04 The Tamiya Color Flat Black Lacquer Paint (LP3) seems promising for a project I'm considering. I don't do model painting, So I'm probably not your usual crowd. I was researching methods to get a deep black surface that's durable enough to be worn. I think if I use this paint on deeply textured surface, I can achieve a reasonably deep black matte surface without a ton of money spent. The idea is to avoid having a surface flat enough to reflect light off the black paint at the optimal light reflecting angle most of the time. I'll have to see what kind of durable, paint-able, surfaces I can get for cheap, or make myself without much effort. The texture has to be coarse and deep enough that the paint doesn't smooth over the surface too much, but fine enough that a cheap camera sensor will average out the surface texture to a smooth enough black. Also preferable is that the material to be painted over is already a dark or black color, so that if any paint wears off, it doesn't affect the average brightness too much.

Another great comparison vid. I also use the Rustoleum 2X flat black with inbuilt primer and it works very well. Extremely flat. Id like to see it against your selection to see any difference.

I have heard about them. I personally just use a grey primer then I spray nato black all over my models as a shado coat for pre shading with airbrush.

Love your videos. I have several of those paints and figured they would look good. I bought the Black 3.0 awhile back...and it looks great, but the durability is trash. If I touch it too roughly then it loses some of its "flatness". The dspiae was disappointing to hear about. I have several of them, but haven't had the chance to use them... hopefully you just got a bad jar. Love the references to the Bad Batch. I'm a big Star Wars guy (not the sequel trilogy tho) and I love Clone Wars, Rebels and the Bad Batch show. Thanks for the video!

I was a Vallejo black user until I got my hands on Scalecolour Flat Black, and for hand brushing, it's my favorite. I find thinning it for airbrush makes it slightly less flat, but AK ultramatte just dulls everything down for me anyway.

Quick Color Flat Black in an aerosol can from HD is a great flat black and very affordable as well.

I do wonder what that Tamiya Lacquer would look like with a clear flat coat over top of it. This video really helped me out with looking at blacks for a Banshee "Black Unicorn" project. I had already bought some of these, one which is the Dspiae so I hope mine isn't bad like that, but this gives me some other options to look at. I can't use pure black like the Black 3.0, I'll lose all the detail on the model, but there are some light black ones here that should do the job.

Great breakdown of flat black paints - thanks! I've had some Black 1.0 powder for a while, but I'm tempted by the liquid 3.0, so it's nice to see it compared to other brands. Looking forward to seeing a video on Revell acrylics and liquid primers sometime in the future. I've had a bad ride with both so I think a little more learning is in order. Looking forward to it! Yeah I've only seen one Revell primer so far, but I find all liquid primers (Vallejo, Ultimate primer) a little hard to get to grips with so far. Just a little more practice for now.

I've used that masters airbrush kit and I couldn't get straight air out of it. Idk if I got a bad airbrush or what. I use my iwata now and it works amazing!

its trippy how all the black spoons look great on their own, until you compare them to the Mosou black, then they all look like gray except for the tamiya laquer

What does the Musou look like with a gloss clear over it? Preferably Lacquer. I wonder if it will go a deep gloss black or if the light will divert to much.

Have you tried testing any of the spray cans like the Krylon with the adjustable spray caps? I had a friend that did some graffiti mural projects. I know there is the spray gun styled head by them that is also better than the ones on the cans. Just a thought when I heard your comment on the Krylon. I am aware of people that basically only use certain caps because they are ones that give them the shape or diameter and the misting qualities desired. They make reusable also.

I own an Iwata HP-CS and have realized that some of the material has flaked off on the inside of the cup. Is this airbrush done? Is this still usable for the long haul or maybe short term? Any help/advice that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Great video as always and keep'em coming!

if it has all flaked off, I don't think it is a problem. i'm assuming it is the chrome that is flaking. Like I said, if it is done flaking, you should be OK. You are probably OK in either case, but the flaking could cause a blockage and may need to be torn down to clear it

if I can count on your advice once again? I am having trouble with Tamiya "Acrylic", Clear X-23 is one of them, I have now ordered some X20A Thinner, but I have tried thinning it with MR. Hobby Levelling thinner and Isopropyl with and without demineralized water. It either is too thick to level out or there is too little surface tension so it can't stay in one even layer, it kind of globs together in small peaks. Any suggestions on how I am failing here?

Looking at that scratch test, I was reminded about a kit I painted using some lacquer base & clear coat over acrylic primer (not even clear to me if it's really primer honestly so that might have been half my problem).The minute I put that kit back together the paint scratched off when I was getting the pose down because a knee joint piece rubbed against the thigh armor. What you think the best way is to prevent paint from chafing off where parts are close/rubbing together?

I wonder how LP-3 looks with thin mat coat? Will it be closer to Mosou? Mosou seems to have slight pourple shift. Or is it only on camera?

It wouldn't matter but you can spray them over the black primer. I tested couple over black primer before the video and it made no difference.

Barbatos have you ever had any problems with Tamiya laqcuer paint? I thinned it correctly using tamiyas lacquer thinner retarder type but it sprays unconsistently and grindy. Almost like its starting to dry inside my airbrush. I tried warming it up a bit inside because I spray in my basement. It helped a lot but it wont spray as smooth as the basic Tamiya paint thinned with retarder type lacquer thinner.

I have never had a problem with it. This is a new one to me. What size needle and nozzle are you using. What air pressure? How close or how far are you to the piece?

@@barbatosrex9473 I am using 0.3 mm high quality Japanese airbrush and I spray it not to close so it blushes nor to far away so the paint drys before it reaches the piece. But I do belive I need to take both the paint and the thinner and let it stand in normal room temprature and not in the basement. Or maybe its just the paint being a bad batch.

from this review it's missing probably the flatest of 'em all blacks, AK Real Colors (RC001, acylic lacquer) Flat Black! You can't get flatter than that! :)) But Mosou Black seems really nice!

I have an idea for mine, paint a Gundam stand from Bandai, pose the Gundam in a flying position then display it with a black background behind it making the stand blend in causing the Gundam to appear to actually be flying

I got dspaie and the Metallic yellow has no metallic in it and the Metallic gold goes on blotchy, awful paint as far as I'm concerned
