The worst thing to me is that the animation leaves the best scene out. That's where the Doctor and companions lie down amongst the dead bodies in the corridor, and pretend to be dead, as a Dalek inspects the bodies for signs of life, its eye stalk going from corpse to corpse, ready to blast away at any movement. Truly terrifying to a seven year old, I can tell you.
I like the fact that the BBC is doing animated episodes to fill the gaps, but, I wish they would spend a little money and get better quality animation. This seems, IMHO, to be cheap half measures.
It's especially bad if you consider that an "amateur" animation package like MMD, even in 2016, could have done **FAR** better work than this. OpenToonz was released as open-source (based on the Toonz package) in March 2016. And Toonz is what Studio Ghibli uses for their computer animation. Really, there's NO excuse for such shoddy work. About the only thing that would look more stilted, clunky and un-lifelike would be the acting, scripting and direction in the latest two seasons of DrWho.
@@SenileOtaku I agree. There's no excuse for those animated episodes to have been done that badly except not wanting to spend a little money to do it right.
@@Ozzy_2014 I think it was just not wanting to spend the money to do it right. I don't know if you are familiar with the Johnny Quest cartoon series from the 1960s but that animation is over 50 years old and is MUCH better than what has been pushed on these Dr. Who episodes.
I've heard a lot of comments on poor animation, but I think they have done a decent job on the majority of animations so far. As someone who isn't interested in reconstructions, this is the only way I will get to see these lost episodes and stories, unless they miraculously find them.
Even back in the Troughton era people complained about changes and made cocksure claims that it would result in the end of the show, yet the show is still incredibly successfull. The more things change the more they stay the same, am I right? This is why I don't take anyone who says that Chris Chibnall (and Jodie Whitakers doctor) will be 'the death of doctor who' seriously.
@@schragemusik bro this comment is 3 years old, I didn't even remember the video But also still disagree, all the writers have strengths and weaknesses, some are gonna appeal to others more or less. But you do you
Shame it wasn't animated...I absolutely hate telly snaps lol. I remember me and my brother when children... saying we hoped one day they would animate them or use CGI and it would be like watching the real thing....the second idea hasn't happened yet but we are getting there lol.
Mark Lyne Originally, Planet 55 wanted to animate The Underwater Menace, but they didn't have the budget, so they just simply made a very low-quality Tele-snap recon.
Love the videos! Just a slight correction about the 35mm film. Although episodes like Power 6, Wheel 6, and Space Pirates 2 were recorded to that format, they were still 625 line SD signals from the cameras, just using a different storage medium from tape. So none of them can be represented in HD. But for the ones that survive, at least they are master recordings, and not telerecordings where 16mm cameras were pointed at TV screens, like the other surviving 60's episodes. Still cruel that Power 6 is not among the survivors, of course.
I saw this story as it was originally broadcast in Australia in 1966. I was living in Newcastle( NSW) at the time and was 5 years old. I did not hide behind the sofa; I hid behind the kitchen door, which was in turn behind the sofa and peered occasionally around the corner despite myself. This story and The Moonbase remain seminal for me in regards to Dr Who. I had seen the final two or three Hartnell stories, including of course the Tenth Planet, but it's these early Troughton stories that are imprinted upon me.
I find it interesting that even in the 60's people moaned about the Doctor changing. As for what I want to see compared next? What if you compared The Ice Warriors 2 & 3 to their reconstructed counterparts?
I kinda wish they did some sort of hybrid episodes with both animation and the recovered 8mm/16mm clips. Just to fill in the blanks. Kinda like what they is with The Animated Shada.
Problem is with Shada we had full scenes so the jumps between animation and live action would only occur at the end of a scene. With the power of the Daleks on the other hand, we only have random snippets of footage from the scenes so the jumps between animation and live action would occur in the middle of scenes and probably feel a lot more jarring
Some of the ideas from the draft scripts sound really interesting in particular the reference to Susan would've been cool, and don't worry you're not the only one who likes The Underwater Menace, hopefully one day the missing episodes from that will be found or at the very least we'll get a proper animation of them. Great video as always dude.
I took my family to watch Power of the Daleks in the cinema - they had a one-off showing that I managed to get tickets to. Apropos of nothing, back in the late 90's, I was friends with a fellow Aussie who did classic DW reconstructions under the name Change of Identity (taken, of course, from the episode of the same name in The Reign of Terror). He did excellent reconstructions and I still have VHS copies of The Savages, The Power of the Daleks, The Moonbase and The Enemy of the World. Ironically, the missing five episodes of The Enemy of the World was discovered intact in a television relay station storage room in Nigeria, so the reconstruction is now rendered moot, but it's still an interesting watch. He did very thorough work, so all the clips from Power are included in his reconstruction. I've often wondered if there was a way to transfer VHS to digital, but I've tried several different ways without success. :-(
I personally don't really like the animation, I watched the power of the Daleks the other day and opted out of watching the official release and instead watched the loose cannon version. It is a brilliant story but something I noticed is that much like the myth makers there is an 8mm clip of the Doctor saying "are you coming or are you not?" And he puts a hat on his head but this is not from the first scene in the TARDIS it's actually from later in the Mercury swamps because you can tell from the background, I think he actually says "come on you two" Also great video by the way! Would you ever consider doing some missing episode videos in the style of your missing episode series but this time you look at episodes like enemy of the world or tomb of the cybermen, ones that were missing for a while but were eventually recovered? I suppose it might not work as well...
Another 8mm clip was wrongly identified too. A The Myth Makers Death of a Spy clip was identified as part of the slitting throats censor clip in Episode 2 Small Prophet, Quick Return. We only have a partial clip of that.
It always bothered me how Troughton is blatantly wearing different clothes from moment he regenerated, with Hartnell's cape just thrown on over the top.
New Regeneration: Are you sick of regenerating and wearing your previous self’s tasteless clothes? That will never be a problem again with Regeneration v2! (coming to a store near you)
I remember going to the BBC Shop to buy the cassette tapes of this one. I was on a, get everything Dalek I could binge. Apart from Tom I couldn’t make head nor tail of what was going on. To my ears the sound was really bad. I had to keep stopping and rewinding to listen to bits again and again. It’s a miracle the tapes didn’t get eaten by the machine 😁
I remember watching this animation for the first time and thinking: "The Daleks eye zooming in like that is so unrealistic. They would never have done that in the orginal" and then seeing that the real footage is even better and creepier made fall in love with 60s Doctor Who even more. And another thing! Would be cool if you would discuss The invasion animation and its history (and maybe why it took them 6 years to do another) or the Ice Warriors and maybe have a rant about how bad it is!
Shame after they tried to get rid of the Daleks in Evil, they basically when with the simplified stalk design .. miss that old zoom and resize thing as if they’re staring a judging..at least NuWho had brought it back somewhat
I feel like we were spoilt by Macra Terror It was finally getting to look like a proper animation, and then... 8 don't even know what happened, but faceless ones felt like a huge step back
I give the animation team credit they did fantastic job doing all this job, The Daleks are of course the best part, They got the movement of the Daleks right.
@@SegaNintendoGuy64 yes I am. This animation is complete crap. The animation is not smooth and seamless. It looks like a group of high schoolers got together and did this for a project.
Don’t forget, this was the first time they’d ever animated six episodes in one go! (And BBCWW were really rushing them for the deadline that was A LOT earlier than they were really comfortable with it being!)
I'm surprised the 35mm prints for Part Six weren't preserved, considering that Episode 2 of "The Space Pirates" of all serials was preserved for "historical significance" for being shot on the same medium. Somehow Part Six of "The Power of the Daleks" didn't seem as historically important to the BBC despite meeting the same criterion.
A number of other 35mm prints were destroyed, including episode 5 of the wheel in space, episode 4 of the daleks and episode 3 of planet of the giants There was often no logic to it
10:17 It's both brilliant and silly that the animation went to the trouble of recreating the cameraman tripping up. 12:30 Unfortunately though, it was recorded onto film from the video cameras' output, so it would be true HD footage of an SD monitor playing the episode. It would still look and sound much better than the majority of the 60s episodes. Another great thing about the animation was hearing those dalek chants from episode 5/6 in 5.1!
Episode 6 was actually on 35mm film. The first 625-line episodes. The videotape cameras were still 405-line. And they still were until they made The Enemy of the World where all episodes of that story are 625-line videotape.
mrchips2301 It seems that the 'Daleks, conquer and destroy chant' is different from the original version. In the original, Peter Hawkins recorded the line twice and it was relentlessly overlayed, but in this version, it seems that the same recording has been used over again.
This animation is good! I'd say it'd be a 9/10, I don't really like how they widened the screen to 16:9, it doesn't match with some of the other episodes, like if you're watching the show and it's 4:3, then it's all of a sudden 16:9. Also I didn't expect how at 1:07 the animated doctor matched with the background doctors legs lol😂.
So the “something else more terrible - something I can only half remember” is a stand-in for the whole, I’m not sure if they destroyed my home planet or not cos me and Susan ran away line. It’s kinda funky to think that some prominent Who writers were already figuring the Daleks into the grander mythos of the show and sort of revising the fact that he seems to meet them for the first time in The Daleks. Anyways that little comment about the absolute CLOWNERY, TOMFOOLERY AND RIGGOURY (sp?) of Pat Troughton could well be a quote from some RU-vid rantsona today 😅 it’d do well with the algorithm!! Great video as always
It's a shame that BBC America pulled the plug on these re animations of the missing episode's. One wonders just how many fan's of Doctor Who were waiting with baited breath for the release of the Daleks Master Plan. Sadly now. It looks like it will never happen. All we can hope for now is that the lost episodes can be found again. Unless of course someone decides to take on the mammoth project of doing it themselves.
@@JoshSnares i know but the only thing i could find at jb hi fi was the colour version and i couldn't be bothered to wait to find the black and white at the time
If you could go back in time to the 60s and save 5 stories in there entirety (any 5 stories does not have too be in one season) Mine are Evil Of The Daleks, Power Of The Daleks, Toymaker, dalek masterplan and The Tenth planet
The animation with the Daleks are pretty good, but the human part reminds me too much of the Archer cartoon series where I'd be expecting Pam Poovey to make an appearance.
Josh, you do realise that you're going to have to compare the special edition revisions to the original animation AND telesnaps? Oh wait, even the recon has been improved upon. You have opened the proverbial Pandora's box. lol
Though I greatly enjoyed the animation, you do highlight some of the issues with the first episode -, particularly around the inconsistencies withTroughton's animated rendering. Clearly, attempts were made to closely match the post-regeneration depiction of the actor with the 8mm film, but it just ends up jarring with the rendering used for the remainder of the serial. Character movements are also at their weakest here and that's not even mentioning the clothing error. Hopefully, this particular episode will be tidied up a bit for the inevitable Season 4 Bluray boxset.
Not gonna lie, I appreciate the amount of effort put into these animated reconstructions and I love your comparison videos but....I kind of prefer the loose canon reconstructions. The quality of the sound in these 60s stories is poor compared to later episodes, and it becomes jarring to watch the high quality animation over the audio from the episodes- they just don't synch in my mind. Not to mention as great as the animation is it always looks a bit stilted to me (the one exception of this being the recent Macra Terror release). I appreciate the work and Im glad they're doing this since other fans love them but I do still prefer the telesnaps. With that said I'd LOVE a fully animated version of Marco Polo or Fury From the Deep.
Yet another great review Josh !! 😊I love how close this is to the telesnaps !! And it’s a great story ! Shame it no longer exists in the BBC archives 😢😢
I think it would be interesting to compare The Reign of Terror animation to the reconstruction, as I always thought The Reign of Terror's animation was the worst of the animated episodes due to so many awkward jump cuts.
I really appreciate that we are getting all of these old stories animated. I really do. And I try to be kind about the animations, but it's frustrating that the issue with the animation quality is just little things letting it down. So much of it is really good, they put heaps of effort into things like backgrounds, but so little care seems to be put into things like walk cycles. I get that they need to cut corners somewhere but they cut corners in the wrong places. It's a real shame honestly.
The first 2nd Doctor story I saw as a child was the old VHS Unedited "Movie" of "The Seeds of Death." It only had the opening theme on episode 1 and the closing credits on episode 6. I remember when they stopped doing this and panicked when they did it in episodes. I thought I only had 2 episodes on a VHS. days before internet lol......good times. My fav Doctors are 2nd, 6th (earliest memories is the final season of 5th) grew up with 6th. And of course the only man who IS the Doctor...Jon Pertwee!!! he has a song to say so lol.
The Daleks 4 and The Power of the Daleks 6 are the only 35mm film print masters are the only of the 9 35mm masters that don't exists. (Which means that Daleks 4 is lower quality than 35mm, being 16mm.) Funnily enough they're both Dalek stories. The other 7 are another Dalek episode: Dalek Invasion of Earth 5. The Space Pirates 2, and some other Season 6 stories.
Thanks for doing these side-by-side comparisons. I've been a fan of Doctor Who since before it was initially canceled. I was happy with some of the older releases that played audio with still pictures. These animated reconstructions are terrible! The art is ugly and the animation is awkward. It looks ludicrously cheap. I've seen better Flash animation here on RU-vid. Animation has succeeded in so many forms, from beautiful anime to lower-detail work like Archer or Aqua Teen Hunger Force. With all the love for Doctor Who out there and all the missing episodes they can sell to us, why couldn't they make this look good?
Don’t forget, this was the first time they’d ever animated six episodes in one go! (And BBCWW were really rushing them for the deadline that was A LOT earlier than they were really comfortable with it being!)
The Jacal Indeed. Although I can take the fact that they made The Space Pirates as a huge budget saver for The War Games, the only things that save it are the main villain only being represented through production stills, random things here and there in the serial, Milo Clancy (I wasn't joking when I said that), and the paring of The Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe. Other than that, it's not that interesting, and is litterally my least favorite missing serial.
I think it's great that missing episodes are being animated, but I really don't like this animation. I don't blame this on the animators however, because they were probably using everything they got to make it great. I'm interested in the new special edition version and will probably check it out if it comes to my Amazon Prime.

Would have liked to have had a mention of some of the different *versions* of this animated feature. There were some animation and character model differences between the aired US/UK versions and the later home video releases. It was annoying, I think the more final fixed versions *weren't* the one released on home video.
The reverse from what I remember. It's actually messed up. One of the mistakes is Ben and Polly in the wrong clothes in a scene. BBCAmerica.com had two versions available on demand through their website: the black and white and the color version. Sometime after they had those online, BBC America aired yet *another* color version of the serial. That version had them in the correct clothing in that scene. From what I understand, the home video release may still have the mistake, at least in one of the versions of it (The black and white?). You can see a screencap of the two ondemand versions and the second later color version they aired. imgur.com/83bc7MG
@@AH-yn6ip The UK DVD/Blu-ray has the error on the black and white version and the corrected shot on the colour version. Reportedly they fixed the VoD versions after the original release.
A long wait and not worth the money as I would have liked to have seen in with animation photos as this was naff sorry but seen better by fans on RU-vid.

Fantastic video as always. I wish I had a large enough disposable income to hire a translator and head to Singapore to see if I can dig anything up. Recovering all the lost episodes of Broomstick Cottage is my proudest media preservation moment, but man, what an achievement finding some lost Who would be...
There's another small nuance, in regard to variant edits of the animation, in that a movie version was produced for theatrical release. That's version I first saw; I kept waiting for the first cliffhanger, and thinking, wait, shouldn't it be _there_? No? Maybe I was misremembering?
Can you discuss part one of The Invasion? I am curious as to why Wendy Padbury is wearing the wrong costume in this episode. I often wonder if it was a genuine mistake, yet there is plenty of supporting material (not least) from the extant episodes to have got this correct.
Hello josh there is a recently discovered episode I think you should cover. In planet giants, there was ment too be a fourth part it was spliced together with clips from episode 3. The unused print was recently discovered you can find out more about it if you go on the lost media wiki and search "Doctor who" in the search bar you will find an article about it
I Personally have no complaints at all about the state of the animation of The Power Of The Daleks, nor about PatrickTroughton being selected to play the new Doctor Who.
From what I saw in the first 2 minutes the animation was so true to the telesnaps. I might understand the need to be economical in the animation, eliminating the closeups would lesson the limited animation short comings, however, from the Loose Canon reconstruction of what does survive of the original live action clips should have been preserved, my humble opinion. A small criticism, however.
