We feed bees sugar syrup when they need it, for example when hiving a new package or nuc. Syrup ensures the bees have a constant supply of carbs in the spring when the weather is variable and flight days may be separated by cold days. Syrup also helps the bees’ wax glands make more wax, which speeds up the comb-building process.

Why don't u use the inner cover when using the hive top feeder? Thx

Hi David, we don't use an inner cover with a hive top feeder to prevent bees from being able to crawl in the inner cover "notch" and drown in the sugar syrup. This gives bees only one safe way in and out of accessing the syrup to eat it... and not drown in it! We hope this information is helpful.

@@davidsoloninka7742 This is a legitimate concern! Theoretically, when it's much hotter and more ventilation is needed, there will be a strong nectar flow and you will not need to feed anymore. At that point, you can remove the hivetop feeder and add your inner cover back to provide a little more of that needed ventilation.
