In this video, I am swatching the same colors of Liquitex and Golden brand paint to determine any noticeable differences. I am surprised at the variation of some of the colors but neither brand walks away the clear winner. Spoiler Alert--I still like both brands equally! I'm curious if you have a favorite brand of paint?
If you have any thoughts, questions, or comments I'd love to hear them. And if you enjoyed this video please like and subscribe. Thanks so much for watching.

This is so wonderful! I am a fairly new painter, (about a year). I just now think I may be ready to upgrade my paints from Liquitex Basics and similar, to heavy body. Do people ever use heavy body for say, the background, but then use a thinner paint for the rest of the painting? I have so much to learn, omg! Lol Thanks again! :)

I am so glad you found this video helpful. In my experience as a mixed media artist (with no formal training!) I say you can use your paints however you like--thin over thick seems fine. What I would suggest is experimenting to see what you like--how much texture you want, etc. I wouldn't rush out to buy a bunch of new paints as the Liquitex Basics is perfectly fine. I am a big fan of using what you have rather than just buying for the sake of having something new. That being said, if you want to try the heavy body paint I would choose one or two colors to try and see how you like them. Thanks so much for watching!

Hi Pam, this reminded me that I keep thinking how I have all my other media swatched out...except my acrylics...and how helpful it would be if I did a swatch book of some sort LOL. I am most interested in transparency and finish for acrylics, since I always figure I can mix any colour I don't like into something that I do. Other media is different, but somehow with acrylics I am a lot more flexible. I think I'll get going on an acrylic swatch book pronto. It won't be a hardship, since swatching is always such a delightful activity lol.

I think swatching is a good activity especially when it's hard to get started or I'm out of ideas. I love that you create a swatch book with your various materials Lianne--that's a great idea to have a designated space for it. When I swatch out colors I rarely reference them again--now that doesn't make any sense, does it?!!

Fascinating. I use both brands - Payne’s Grey and Titan Buff are two of my favs yet I hadn’t realised how different they are.

Those are two of my favorite colors as well--but it is interesting how different they are in each brand.

Thank you! I'm having a hard time following a tutorial where everything is Golden brand and I always use Liquitex. So frustrating--glad I'm not just losing it here. Haha

I hear ya Cheryl. I think the brands are quite similar and both are high-quality, pigmented paint so whatever brand you choose you can't lose. I mostly use Liquitex as well.

Thanks for letting me know it was helpful Ellen. It is useful to know which brand to buy before you invest in a tube.

Price also plays a big part in your choice of paints and where it's made.

I totally agree Marie. Price is a big factor--I generally wait for a sale or I buy in bulk on ebay.

I am really enjoying these videos where you share tips, tricks and info. ...this one sure opened my eyes to the difference in brands and color intensity. Now I am going to watch it again and make a list of colors and brands I want! I think you just saved me some $$ by sharing swatching these two brands. Thanks again Pam....another aha moment for me.

Thanks Pam! It is a little surprising that there can be that much difference in colors by brand. It never occurred to me to swatch these out before--now if only I can remember to check the swatch sheet so I know which one I want to use!

Seems like a lot of the Liquitex colors was more opaque, with the swatches you did.. I also, love that you used the book pages. I LOVE book pages.

That is a good point--the Liquitex does seem more opaque. I hadn't really thought of that. And sounds like we are kindreds with our love of using book paper!
