숙자와 같은 이름에서 ‘자’는 ‘아들 자’를 사용하는데 이것은 일본에서 ‘코’로 발음됩니다. 과거 일본이름을 사용하시던 분들이 해방 후 쓰던이름을 한국식으로 발음하여 사용하게된 것이라 합니다.

In the Philippines, for males, anything that ends with *do sounds SUPER old e.g. Fernando, Edgardo, Rolando etc. For females, anything that ends with *ta sounds old like Anita, Clarita etc. Using Maria as first name is also super old like Maria Cristina, Maria Clara, Maria Elena etc. --- Special mention... THE ACRONYMS!! Anyone who names their child "Luzviminda" is SUPER old, it's an acronym for three major islands in the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

In Portugal it's the same regarding the "Maria" thing. And most female names that end with "-tina", "-vina" or "inda" sound quite old, like "Albertina", "Etelvina", "Ermelinda", "Rosalinda", "Isalina", "Ernestina", "Adelina". For men it's not as systematic, but most combinations that involve "José" feel old, much like "Maria". Other random male names that sound old: "Custódio", "Alberto", "Adelino", "Alvaro", "Emanuel", "Agostinho", "Amaro", "Bento", "Domingos", "Eusébio", "Fernando", "Inácio", "Jerónimo", "Pascoal".

He used the Korean spelling of Japanese words. Tsu is pronounced/written as Chu(츠) and fu as hu (후). The Japanese “fu” is actually more like “hu” though if you think about the order of hiragana. “Ha, hi, hu, he, ho”
@SP-xh3gz
@SP-xh3gz 3 года назад
@@Mibs-Mibby although subtle there is a difference between F and H sounds in Japanese. F sounds like ファ, フィ, フ フェ, フォ (fa, fi, fu, fe, fo) if heard side by side with H sounds like は, ひ, へ, ほ (ha, hi, he, ho) you can hear a difference. So even in written format if changing F sounds to H sounds can be confusing because it is totally different spelling/pronunciation in Japanese 😅

@@Mibs-Mibby I totally get what you mean, it makes sense when going from Korean to Japanese for Tsu (츠) and Fu (후). BUT it shouldn't be translated twice going from Japanese to Korean to English. In Korea, the letter of the old name was repeated 'ja'. In the Japanese colonial period, Koreans had to change to the Japanese name. Then they wrote the most common letters. It was 'co'. 36 years later,Korea were independent and changed it back to Korean name. But they received only the Chinese letters, so Japan and Korea used the same last letter in the past.Even if the name is unconditioned, it was used.

Interestingly, my folks' names and my own Japanese names have a lot of the old-school characteristics that Erina mentioned. My mom, from Tokyo, is named 愛子 (Aiko), which is a super traditional girl's name meaning "Child of love." My dad, from Okinawa, is 貞夫 (Sadao), an also traditional boy's name meaning "Honest man." When I was born in L.A., he bequeathed me the 貞 (sada) part of his name and prefixed it with one of old kanjis Erina brought up, 清 (kiyo), to form 清貞 (Kiyosada), which I hear from my Japanese friends sounds like an old samurai name. Weirdly, he liked the actor Kirk Douglas when I was born, so he gave me the first name of Kirk in English, which is impossible to pronounce in Japanese. The closest is カーク (Kaaku), which I still find hilarious to this day. I dare you to ask Erina to pronounce it 😋 Thanks for the fun vid!

I'm from Spain and the easiest ways to tell if a name is old school is counting how many syllables it has xD usually old school names for women are pretty long and have some kind of religious aspect like Asunción, Milagros, Esperanza, Dolores, Encarna… and men pretty much the same, they always have three or more syllables like Eustaquio, Gervasio, Constantino, Rogelio. So the trick is: long name = old name
