Just a comment for those growing hydrangea paniculatas in the southern US. They bloom in July in the south and it is too hot to get any pink color as the blooms fade so they just turn brown. If you cut off about 1/2 of the blooms in July (when they are still fresh and look nice, hard to do but worth it, they do make very nice cut flowers though) you'll get a 2nd set of blooms in October which will get the pink coloration. Every flower you trim off (usually) yields 2 flowers later in the fall. The flowers are a bit smaller than the first bloom but still very nice. This only applies in the South (I'm in Dallas) since the first bloom happens with enough time for the plants to grow and generate a 2nd set of blooms before first frost. It works best if you trim the blooms off a bit inside of the outer edge of the plant (just above a set of leaves) since the new branches will grow 6 to 12 inches before generating new flowers.

I am a HUGE PW fan. I really enjoy these presentations from your team. It's so helpful to see full grown plants. I do really wish "Limelight Prime" was introduced as its own hydrangea vs "an improved variety" of "Limelight". This forces them to be constantly compared when there is a place for each. I feel that they are each special and still different enough that Limelight Prime should have been given a completely different name. I personally would have loved a name instead like "Berry Limeade" to go along with "Little Lime Punch" and to emphasize in both the monikers that they have great colorful fall displays. 😀
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 года назад
Thank you so much for this! You're totally right that they both have a place in the garden - we called it Limelight Prime and an improved version of Limelight because we actually used the genetics from the original Limelight to improve upon some features and overall plant performance. So they are kind of like siblings :)

Is it me, or does the Limelight Prime seem to be more on the leggy side in growth habit?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 года назад
In this video, the Limelight Prime we filmed is in a more shaded area in the trial garden so it doesn't have the full, compact habit that the others in full sun in the garden do. It also was newly planted later last year so it is still getting established some :)

I just planted a Limelight prime. I doubt I get much blooms or fall color this year. It's not even 3 ft tall yet. I will be getting some of the others. I really love the tree like look of the original Limelight too. I'd love a forest of them!!!

Yeah, your Limelight Prime will most likely continue to get established and push out new growth this year and you should see some blooms next year. Yes! The Limelight standards are so beautiful and add a really nice architectural element to the garden :)

Thank you for your video. You did a great job and I enjoyed watching it. Would you please tell me how to make panicle hydrangeas having a full bloom? I just purchased 2 strawberry hydrangeas and one quick fire fab hydrangeas from your company couple weeks ago. I planted them in full sun spots here in Texas and I am learning how to make them bloom fully next year. Which fertilizer should I use for them and when to add fertilizer? Thank you so much!
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice Год назад
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed this video! The best way to get large, full blooms is to ensure the plants get enough sun. Because you live in Texas, I would also recommend adding a good 2-3" layer of mulch to help keep the roots cool. Here's a helpful article where you can learn all about successfully growing panicle hydrangeas ☺ www.provenwinners.com/panicle-hydrangeas

Hi there, I really enjoy your videos. In the last segment regarding Lime Light, how do you prune it to reveal the stems in the architectural that it was shown. Usually it’s left in a more rounded form, but I love it pruned up. Any advice?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice Год назад
Thank you so much! Great question - that Limelight is pruned so that it's a hydrangea standard, which is essentially a tree form hydrangea. For this method, you want to start with a younger plant so that it has time to establish in this type of form. First, you find a central leader branch (or a few) that will act as your "trunk," from there you keep those pruned so that the new growth is more towards the top of the plant and continue to maintain it like so. Here's an older video we have on this topic! We are planning to make a new video this year :) Don't hesitate to reach out if you have other questions! www.provenwinners.com/videos/how-prune-your-hydrangea-standard

Thankyou for the great video. I can see that I need to add Limelight Prime and Little Lime Punch to my spring order. I noticed that your blooms on all your hydrangeas are not floppy. How do you do that? My standard procedure in late winter is to cut back my panical hydrangeas by about 1/3 and fertilize with Hollytone or Rosetone. They bloom beautifully but by this time of year they are so floppy and when the snow flies some of them will break. Any help would be appreciated
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 года назад
So glad you liked the video! As for the stem strength, it sounds like you are pruning properly which is great! Do you fertilize in the fall or spring? Sometimes fertilizing too heavily can actually lead to weak stems - by pushing more soft, rapid growth that isn't as sturdy.
@patriciaglass1743
@patriciaglass1743 2 года назад
@@pwcolorchoice I usually fertilize in the spring. Should I fertilize in the fall? or try not fertilizing at all?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 года назад
@@patriciaglass1743 Maybe try not fertilizing next year, the plants don't require any and then we can determine if that is what is causing the branches to be a bit weaker :)

Why is the limelight hardy in zone 9 but not the prime version or the little lime?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 года назад
Great question! Limelight has been out on the market long enough that we have been able to get enough data and confirm that it will grow in zone 9. Limelight Prime and Little Lime both have the potential to be able to grow in zone 9, but because we haven't had them released enough to be certain, we are waiting to see the performance before saying so. :)
