What i love about Winsor & Newton is the transparacy as I love layering technique. Schmincke can be opaque after view layers. Winsor also has somewhat more natural colors which I prefer. Schimncke has more movement than W&N. So again it depends on the painter and their style I guess

I totally agree with you, the W&N are beautifully transparent and I also love their natural colours. I think they all have their place and like you said, it depends on the painter 😊

@@TammyNewmanArt is Winsor and Newton professional watercolor set considered really professional? I am a graphic artist that just bought a set, with the ideea in mind that I am buying some good quality pro stuff. I have second thoughts looking at it because Schimncke looks better. Can you give me an opinion on that? Have a great day

Winsor & Newton are my favorite watercolors. Perhaps the difference in diffusion is because WN allows a little more individualized pigment character in each color, unlike Schminke, which is more evened-out, and Daniel Smith and Qor, brands that encourage lots of movement. However, there might have been something else going on in your tests, because I know from experience that Winsor Yellow is a strong spreader, as is the Permanent Rose. Their Ultra marine, not so much, but other blues, such as Winsor Blues (red and green shades), Prussian, Turquoise, and Cobalt blues move nicely in my experience. I also prefer pre-wetting WN pans to having paint with so much honey or other additives that the paint slops out of the pan when traveling. Basically, for the exceptional transparency and beauty of pigments used, my most often used paint is Winsor & Newton.

They are lovely paints, I really like using them to. There could have been an issue with the tests I did, I always say this is not an exact science lol.

I also find winsor and newton harder to re wet than other professional brands. Thanks for the video.

Hi Renea, I hope you’re well and thank you for watching 😊. My first professional set was W&N and it never occurred to me that they were difficult to re-wet until I got other professional brands

I didn’t catch whether or not you mentioned which paper you used. That makes a world of difference. Thanks for your video. I like both paints, but I’m partial to Schminke Horadan.

Schmincke, that is. I don’t think I’ll ever learn the correct spelling!!

Hey thank you for watching the video! I believe the paper I used was the Canson 300gsm cold press paper. I was very lucky that I was gifted loads of watercolour paper and I’m trying to use it up. I normally use Arches as I got 2 big rolls of it that I got in a sale, honestly I have more watercolour paper than I think I’ll ever be able to use! 🤣 Haha I feel your pain with spelling, I’m dyslexic and I’m always making mistakes 🤣

If your ‘lemon’ yellow has gone greenish grey then it could be it is actually aureolin , which does that as it is not lightfast and sort of oxidises as well. My professional box came with both and as they were loose in the pans got mixed up when I first got it. There is a nice aureolin hue you can replace it with. I like Schminke for reliability and W&N for being more characterful, and it having a very English feel. I like the very underrated Daler Rowney professional better than W&N …..

Sounds like you have the W&N Nickel Titanate Lemon Yellow - this is not a typical Lemon Yellow pigment - it's quite a muted green leaning yellow pigment that's quite opaque like you say, - if you want a classic Lemon yellow probably better going for the W&N Winsor Lemon or Cadmium Lemon from their range. I do love Nickel Titanate Yellow for different reasons but it's not really for a basic palette in my mind.

Winsor & Newton is damium - free in the proffessional set (it says in the product description when I wanted to buy one). This is a huge plus for me, compared to Schminkey that has cadmium in their colors, and it is not healthy for human doby. That is the number one reason why I would choose Winsor over Schminckey.

Windsor and Newton dont make it to my top 10 watercolor paints.that means m.graham, daniel Smith, block, maimeriblu, sennelier, qor, mission gold,daVinci, schminke, and white nights are all before...but because the only paint available in a nearby store is Windsor Newton I have an entire shoe box of tubes...every color...and it was what I'm started with 60 years ago for the same reason.

Aw thank you for watching the video. Wow you must have a lot of watercolour paint, some of them I’ve not even heard of like maimeriblu and block - I’ll have to try and check them out 😊. Do you mind if I ask why you W&N aren’t in your top 10? I’m always interested in others opinions 😊

@@TammyNewmanArt reasons. Dries to crumbly mess in plein aire pallets, doesn't do quite as nice a wash as others, not as easy to rewet, isn't as pigmented, have to watch for single pigments as some of their mixes make for ugly mud, for instance pbr7 depending on which per 7 makes a world of difference when in the color you are trying to mute or shift. Just the easier of the dislikes for w- n for me to articulate. Not that I have got rid of them but when my greatgrandaughter can visit inside my house again ( after covid) she can use my w- n and i wont fuss about the size of her puddle on her palette.

Aww okay, that’s really interesting and thank you for sharing. The re-wetting I find an issue and I’ll look out for the others you mentioned 😊. I’m not a really experienced artist, I only took it up as a hobby a just over 2 years ago so getting information from experienced artists is always helpful.
