One of the first questions many people ask when choosing a new powered home subwoofer or replacing an old one is, should I go with a ported or sealed box cabinet enclosure?
In this video, the SVS Sound Experts discuss the differences between ported and sealed home theater subwoofers as well the unique acoustic properties of each. You'll learn which type of subwoofer is ideal for max SPLs (sound pressure levels) and deep bass extension as well as which tends to be more musical, with tighter and punchier bass. We also cover the visual and physical impact each subwoofer has on a room and which is ideal for various listening preferences.
One of the SVS subwoofer design philosophies is to narrow the gap between ported and sealed box subwoofer designs. Meaning, SVS sealed box subwoofers have amazing output and low frequency extension and SVS ported box and ported cylinder subs are exceptionally quick with pinpoint accuracy and speed in transients.
If you’d like to dig deeper into this topic, leave a comment below, or there's an insightful conversation unfolding on the SVS blog: goo.gl/2GKXbo

I have a PB-1000 and it just kills. I love that thing, just need to go dual next, too many dead spots but the sub itself is awesome. For the money it's incredible. I find it great with both music and movies.

Lucky you... I'm still trying to convince the wife we need one! Iv'e even told her how lovely she is first thing in the morning, when she actually looks like a bag of crisps! I hate the question, "Whats wrong with the one you have?" It's not an SVS! "What's an SVS?" A proper sub! "I thought your current sub was a proper sub!" Oh forget it, go back to sleep!

I've has both ported and sealed subs. Ported gives you a nice rumble, but I find the sealed to be more satisfying for movies and music. Feeling the sound like an earthquake is cool and all, but I prefer the cannon ball blast to the chest that sealed gives you. Scarier.

SVS subs are VERY expensive here in Europe !!! While americans pay $2.300/2.500 for the SVS PB16-ULTRA, we pay at least 3.500€ ( $3996,04). Even the less expensive SVS SB-1000, we pay 600€ ($685,03), while americans pay just $250/300. I would love to have dual SVS subs, but it´s just ridiculous to pay 7.000€ ($7992,07) for two subs !!! For now i will keep my Rel Acoustics Storm 3...but one day i will buy an SVS sub...or a JL Audio sub. If i were rich, i surelly would buy the Legacy Audio Foundation subwoofer. Greetings from Portugal. Cheers

ports have no place in speaker design, its just a crutch to helps with output. sealed actually go lower since don't have the phase issue below port tuning.

sudd Both can work great. In big rooms I think ported is better but in small sealed is. In small room you get room gain so the sub will go much lower and louder at the lower frequencys. This is Why the sb- subwoofers have that roll off slope, to take advantage Of small rooms

Kavvy, good choice on surround 5.1 for your own “bedroom theater.” I had a similar Logitech desk/workstation setup after graduating from college for my first job. Now I’m rocking Atmos and reviving quadraphonic music mixes. This is a good video because it presents sealed vs. portable concepts that have some commonality across manufacturers; even Logitech has options for ported and sealed. ‘Learning’ and ‘spending’ money are two different things - in fact, ‘learning’ more of what you like and appreciate will help you ‘spend’ less.

As i see it, when you have power and response, sealed is always a better choice. Except in situations where speaker is small and you want to compensate that with a big box that helps creating the deep sound. For example, that is why pretty much all small 2.1 desktop setups are ported. But in this case we are talking about 500W rms drivers that go down to 19 hz or lower. For me, frequency response is most important thing. I want my speaker to be able to reproduce everything i play through it. Then goes the power. So, when you play music or watch movies you want your speaker to be able to reproduce sound as quickly as possible, driver has to be able to return to its "default" position as quickly as possible and sealed does that better because of the vacuum that helps it. I have a feeling that ported woofers create sound that doesn't really exist. Because its "free", driver moves a lot longer then in sealed one and it doesn't have the time to go to "zero" when new sound has already begun. That maybe sounds more fun especially in movies where there is continuous rumbling but in my opinion that is just not realistic. And that's especially a problem if you listen to electronic music like me...psy trance or drum and bass...A lot of fast sounds at the same time so speaker can't separate them because it never stops moving. But when you have a 500W pig that goes to down 19 and is sealed...it simply does everything great. Plus, its small. Anywho, that's just my opinion and how i explain the difference to myself. You guys have great woofers and although i am currently using 1 ported 160w subwoofer connected to my stereo amp and second 400W rms sealed car subwoofer powered by car amp which is powered by 30A/13.8v laboratory power supply and connected to my computer sound card (yes, it works like hell, got me sued for disturbing peace in my building and messed up rigidity of my kitchen elements :)), i am definitely planing to get SB-2000 to replace them both in the near future.

Ported subwoofers output will always be out of phase and you'll feel that it is lagging behind the song if you don't have a proper dsp to adjust the delay. Go with the sealed sub for the sake of simplicity.

Actually, sealed designs have a much flatter response. Ported subs go louder, but their frequency drops like a stone after their specified frequency, say 17 hz. A good sealed sub, with a similar frequency rating, will extend to as low as 8 hz in the right room. Not as loud, but definitely more tactile.

You say sealed designs are generally tighter and better suited for music. What if I get a ported sub and run it in sealed mode (closing the ports and, if it has EQ settings, set it to sealed)? Does this work for music in a similar way to sealed designs, or am I better off getting the sealed sub from the start? I want to have the best of both worlds so I'm thinking to get a ported subwoofer for movies and music. When I need the sheer output I can always open some ports.

I have been torn between the SB2000 Pro & the PB2000 Pro. I want a sub more for music than for a home theater setup yet I listen to a lot of bass heavy electronic music that reaches down to the lowest of frequencies (not mid ranged electronic music that's more main stream). It seems like the consensus online is that the SB is better for music and the PB is better for home theater due to its larger output and lower frequency range. How ever the response on the PB seems to be almost as flat as the SB. I would be doing most of my listening in a small bedroom that's about 10x10ft and a living room that's 20x20ft. I also produce music a little bit and want an accurate sub. I suppose in end my question is are those extra 3hz worth getting the PB and will the SB have enough power to relatively blow off my pants in a 20x20 room. Thanks!

Some of the technical differences they left out is that in a sealed design there's a law of physics that states that every time you go down 1 octave in frequency, a SEALED speaker must stroke back and for 4 times further to produce the same volume (loudness). in other words if the speaker is moving just 2mm at 80hz it has to move 8mm at 40hz and then 32mm at 20 hz to keep up the same level of volume. This typically causes a sealed speaker to get quieter and quieter the deeper you play at some point while at the same time it moves more and more the deeper it plays. Eventually it will move too far and either "run out of steam", damage itself or have significant distortion (or all 3). A properly ported design overcomes some of this by essentially having the ports "help out" where the speaker starts to fall into this "roll off" area. The ports help to boost the volume where the speaker is starting to have trouble (as the notes get lower) and they also dampen the movement of the speaker so the speaker moves less and less as notes get lower instead of more and more (at least up to the tuning freq. of the ports).

Overcome the problem with brute force. I am breaking in my PSA S7201 today. I've always had ported subs going all the way back to my car audio days. It absolutely does take a lot for a sealed sub to match a ported sub, this one bridges that gap.

A passive radiator is basically the same idea as a port. Both the PR and the port have a tuning frequency and will invert the backwave of the speaker at certain frequencies which contributes more output as though there was an additional driver.

When you guys talk about application and room sizes, it would be nice to put that in context. For example, room volume to subwoofer matching. How do I know if a PB-3000 is enough? Or duals? or a PB-4000? Or a PB16-Ultra. This is where something like THX marketing helps. You know based on a certain room volume whether you need Select or Ultra, etc. How do I get this info from SVS? Thanks!

If my room is not enormously big and I go with two identical subs will I notice any difference between SB16 and PB16 in case of LFE? I guess that higher output level on PB16 will not really make sense as I will have to set them below the reference level anyway. And I mostly listen to music (90% of the time) and sometimes movies.
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 7 лет назад
In the case of LFE, you will not likely reach the max output level for either 16-Ultra subwoofers, especially with duals, so there wont be much noticeable difference. Given your music preference, the SB16-Ultra subwoofer has the edge with speed in transients, an important quality for rendering instruments and snappy basslines with accuracy, precision and control. It still has plenty of punch and extension for movies but may be a better fit given the 90/10 split for music.

I want to design a common subbox for both and then build, So that it produces maximum volume and volume, as well as deep bass and sufficient vibration (the best and most optimal mode). However, the space limit for this subbox should also be considered, which can be up to 35-40 cm wide, up to 50-60 cm long and up to 70 cm high. In the speaker specifications, the minimum response frequency of the 32 Hz speaker is written, which is probably mentioned with its box.

We don't recommend sealing a ported subwoofer unless you have the ability to change the port tuning frequency of the subwoofer, as you can with our 3000, 4000 and 16-Ultra subwoofers. Plugging a port can cause the subwoofer to be less accurate in frequency response even if it does give it slightly better transient speed.

The new speaker works well with great sound separation and does the job however I can honestly say the base is although it does it’s job it’s almost boarder line pathetic . The moral of the story I guess is if you like your base there ain’t no going back after Svs.

@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 2 года назад
Room size is not as important as many people think, it's more about listening preferences and the speakers you are running. That said, anything smaller than 12x12 would be small, 20x20 is medium, and from there, its large. Depending on your speakers, dual PB-3000s or a single PB-4000 or PB16-Ultra would suffice. We also have our subwoofer matching tool here: www.svsound.com/pages/merlin

Hello, I'm trying to decide what would be better for my home theater, some help would be greatly appreciated. My home theater room will 1300 cubic feet, 17f wide 13f length and 8f ceiling. There will be a a walkway behind the media center with no door besides that it's a closed off room, I'm trying to decide between a pb1000 or sb 1000. Also it will be a domby atmos set up and mostly for movies. Thanks

Overwhelming options!! :) I'm planning to build a home theater room. I am considering the ultra 16 sealed because the price of both ported is high. But what is considered a small medium room? I have no chance to go to a showroom before buying so I will ahve to make a decision based on reviews... excellent video
@SVS_Sound

Thanks. Small to medium is roughly anything below 15x15. Above that, you'd want to go with 4000 or 16-Ultra, or dual of one of the smaller series. If you email custservice@svsound.com with specific room dimensions, we'll make a recommendation.

Tough question there as there are a lot of variables. You can't go wrong with a Prime Pinnacle Surround System (www.svsound.com/products/prime-pinnacle-surround-system). For that sized room, a PB-2000 Pro or SB-2000 Pro would be solid and total cost would be just around $3,500.

I'd like to add a subwoofer to my bedroom and am looking at the PB-1000 and SB-1000. I don't know the exact dimensions of my room, but it's definitely not large. I'm into music, movies, and gaming, so I was thinking that the PB-1000 would be a good compromise to satisfy all of those areas. It might be a little overkill for my setup, but I love hard-hitting bass! Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Maybe a smaller subwoofer would be just as good? My budget is $500.
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 6 лет назад
The PB-1000 would certainly be a great option if you like deep, hard-hitting bass. It's also very musical for a ported subwoofer so you'd get great response for anything you're listening to. The SB-1000 will be a little quicker and punchier, but not as capable of massive output or depth so I think your first instinct of PB-1000 is right on for a $500 budget.

You may be surprised by the output and extension of the SB-2000 since it has significantly more amplifier power than the current model you own as well as additional driver surface area. It can hit below 20Hz (the limit of human hearing) and really energize a space so I think it would deliver what you need.

This is not a dedicated theater room. Clint Qualls that'll all come down to personal taste, I know people who regret getting sealed as they just want the most output, but they didn't know until after they got the subwoofer. I'm sure both sealed and ported SVS subs sound great though. (Never experienced one yet) I have the Ultimax 18" and I don't think I could sacrifice my big ported box for sealed accuracy. So what I take away from this is that lets say the SB3000 and PB3000 will sound exactly the same for movies until I reach the limit of the SB3000? Only beyond that limit the difference between them will show?
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 3 года назад
Not exactly the same. The ports give the PB more palpable output where as the sealed cabinet tends to be quicker, punchier and more musical. This extends across the entire low frequency spectrum. The ports and larger cabinet also allow the PB version to dig a bit lower. That said, SVS has worked very hard to narrow the delta in performance between the two cabinet styles.

I have a Kenwood SW-305 which is a Ported subwoofer and im not able to get the exact response whereever i place, but if i go past my room to other room im hearing very nice response, unfortunately my room is smaller i think....it also has crossover controls and reverse function but it didnt help much either...
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 5 лет назад
Wish we had a better response, but it really depends on the room. One thing that would definitely help would be adding a second subwoofer to smooth bass response throughout the listening area.

@JoshM7
@JoshM7 5 лет назад
Joseph Karthic Placement is key, both listening position and Subwoofer placement. I had to lean on my bookshelf speakers to aid in the 50hz + area as placement of my subwoofer is very limited (see it on my channel, it's a bit big for my room lol) Normally adding a second sub is one of the easier ways to smooth out the response. But you make do with what you have and learn as you play around with it.

The ported subwoofer will still have greater overall output capabilities and the sealed will still be a bit more transient and musical but it narrows the delta significantly.

I live in a condo building and the living room that I plan to use the sub is 17' X 12', my question is would the ported or sealed be better if I want room shaking bass that I can FEEL at really low loudness levels, I can't play anything loud or the neighbors will complain. sucks to be me.
@damianhgn
@damianhgn 7 лет назад
My suggestion, regardless of what the cabinet type will be, is to try and put the sub closer to your listening position. This will allow the sub to vibrate the couch or whatever you're sitting in at lower volume levels giving you that impression of feeling without having to have the listening level too high for your situation. Another option you may consider (although I don't have any personal experience with this) is a bass transducer. In short it vibrates whatever it's mounted to to simulate the feeling of bass. I've heard both good and bad things about them but could be what you're looking for.
@SVS_Sound
@SVS_Sound 7 лет назад
Andrew - A sealed subwoofer will give you great punch and slam at any listening level while the ported will go lower and produce greater output. It sounds like sealed might be your best bet and you may consider an SVS SoundPath Subwoofer Isolation System to accompany. It decouples the subwoofer from the floor so the energy is not transferred into the walls and ceiling, but rather into the room which lets you feel it at lower levels while keeping the neighbors happy.

What if you bought the ported SVS subs, and anytime you wanted to change the way it sounded just plug the ports from none to all three ports to figure out what best fits your room or you can ajust to what you are listening to, I believe SVS has round foam port plugs to do just that.
